Abstract

In order to comprehend the many aspects of social and cultural historiography of traditional China, it is imperative to recognize who are the main actors. In traditional Chinese society, there is a significant category known as the Chinese gentry, or the shenshi 紳士 in Mandarin. They were known as the Chinese scholar-official class who administered the traditional Chinese dynastic government system since more than two-thousand years ago until the abolishment of the system in 1911. The Chinese gentry emerged from the intellectuals who became officials by going through a special, open-recruited, educational system; a system that enabled every person from any strata in traditional society to enroll. However, their office and titles could not be passed to their offspring through birthright. All ministers, governors, magistrates, intellectuals, poets, men of letters, and also the metropolitan and local informal leaders emerged from this class. Chinese histories in the times of the various dynasties are decorated by the roles and actions of this shenshi.

Prejudice and discrimination at the time of slavery is one of the significant factors that constructs racism against African-Americans until today. This journal will discuss about prejudice and discrimination at the time of slavery which is reflected in the characterizations of the black characters and the white characters in Twelve Years A Slave. The analysis method of this juronal is by colaborating close reading with prejudice theory of Pettigrew (1982) and Healey (1998). The characterizations that are shown in the slave narrative Twelve Years A Slave are very diverse and do not stereotyping the characterizations based on the color of their skin. Solomon as the author and narrator criticizes slavery in not racist way. He tends to criticize the system of slavery without blaming the white race. Research in children with normal language development has shown that there is a certain order in the production and learning of pronominal forms. To one’s knowledge, there has yet to be a study on the pronoun development of Indonesian speaking children whose native language do not distinguishbetween the nominative-accusative form (e.g. in English, I/me – Indonesian, saya/saya) and at the same time being gender neutral (e.g. in English, he/she – Indonesian, dia/dia). The present study follows the personal pronoun development of a (Jakarta) Indonesian-speaking child from 24 months to 46 months of age.

Abstract

Pictures or paintings of high-rank officials hanged in government or public offices are not only a recent phenomenon. Francois Valentijn (1724-1726) wrote in his book, Oud en Neuw Oost Indien, the common practice of hanging pictures or paintings of high-rank officials even in the eighteenth century in Indonesia when the East India Company (VOC) had its power over the land. The Fatahillah Historic Museum in Jakarta has kept all the pictures and paintings of the Dutch Indies officials from the time of the East India Company (VOC) to 1942. The curriculum vitae of those persona is a corpus for research on some aspects of the Indonesian colonial history.
