Abstract

As a process that relates to culture, acculturation becomes one important factor in tourism. Usually, the hosts borrow the result of acculturation in tourism activity more than the tourists (guests). Acculturation in tourism does not only occur in tourism practices today but also in the past, especially in colonial Indonesia. This article discusses acculturation in tourism activity in the Netherlands-Indies that became part of the tourism practices by using historical methods and Nunez’s concept of acculturation in tourism. By using guidebooks, newspapers, magazines, postcards, photographs, travelogues as sources, this article traces the result of acculturation at that time. The result shows that there was acculturation in tourism activity in the Netherlands-Indies. There were material objects and customs as tourism facilities, that could be seen, practised and enjoyed by the tourists. It concluded that at that time the tourists (the guests) borrowed the result of acculturation more from the hosts.

Abstract

9 Summers 10 Autumns (2011) is an inspirational autobiographical novel about a young man from a small city of Batu who later succeeded in pursuing his dream by working in the United States. The novel was written according to Iwan Setyawan’s life story and it has been made into a movie by the same name in 2013. Two years later, the movie was adapted into an augmented motion picture hinted illustrative book which is said to be the first kind to appear in Indonesia that combines novel, comic, app and film together. Somehow this phenomenon has also contributed to the rising trend of films adapted into books in Indonesia, such as Assalamualaikum Beijing (2015), What’s Up with Love? (2016), and others. This study caters for Iwan Setyawan’s strategy in achieving legitimacy in the arena of Indonesian Literature and his American Dream Ideals that are depicted within the book. The discussion is carried out within the perspectives of Pierre Bourdieu’s field of cultural production theory as well as sociology of literature approach in highlighting the phenomenon of transformation from novel into film and eventually into augmented motion picture hinted illustrative book. Later, the study discovers that it has changed the image of Indonesian art and literary world in which such prestigious legitimacy can now be achieved through commercial strategies, making it seem dynamic but at the same time questionable in its most authentic sense.

Abstract

Among the debates on the choice of Indonesian term for woman, the present research examines the use of the gendered lexicon perempuan and wanita with the aim to reveal which term is more preferable and how the terms are used to talk about woman. Using corpus-based approach, the study compares frequency and pattern of word usage of perempuan and wanita from two corpora, namely IndonesianWac and ind_mixed_2013. The research uses a mixed-method design in which quantitative analysis is used to identify word frequency and to measure significant collocation, while the qualitative analysis is used to determine meaning on the basis of semantic preference. The study reveals that the word wanita tends to be more frequently used than the word perempuan to signify woman. In terms of meaning, both of the words are used to talk about woman in relation to body, especially their reproductive function, people particularly men, family, and age. The difference is that perempuan tends to relate woman with the issues of gender equality and organization, while wanita with sexual relationship. Furthermore, it strongly indicates that woman in relation to their public domain is denoted with the term perempuan, whereas the relation with domestic domain is denoted with wanita.

Abstract

Initially a social entertaining dance in various countries of Southeast Asia, joget known as a customary entertainment in the context of Nusantara as a region, has turned more traditional in contemporary times. However less then 50 years ago it was the most popular dance of entertaining halls in Indonesia, Singapore and Malay peninsular. Joget was the common way of social dancing, indigenous in an urban setting when Ball-room and Latin –American was yet not popular.             Joget dance came in practice together with musical influence coming from Hispanic influence during 16th century, followed by other Europeans. In the urban mestizo settings of colonial living, the entertaining world became a mixture between West and East, European and Asian.            While modern entertaining, which gradually spread and speed up after World War II, brought about vast development from the new media, it opened to globalization trends of new economics and politics in new liberated countries.            With features encompassing the Malay world, joget adopts local values from the new emerging nations, dissolving away from entertainment to represent more traditional values of these nations moving towards the new millennium.A historical shift in culture development that arose from a roaring intercultural environment, this dance becomes a cultural component of new nations as Singapore, Malaysia, also in certain region of Thailand, and in Indonesia significantly becoming transitional to modernity and transformational to traditional revival.

Abstract

This research on translation problems aims to describe the translation of cultural words from Entrok novel into The Years of the Voiceless (2013). This research was conducted through qualitative and functional approaches and was analyzed by using Williams and Chesterman’s causal comparative model to see the translation procedures applied to fulfill the skopos. Based on Newmark’s cultural words category, the researcher identified 80 cultural words that were categorized into (1) material culture; (2) social culture and leisure; and (3) organization, customs, procedure, activity, and concept. The data were collected through library research and interview with the translator. The research then used the causal comparative technique to compare the source text’s cultural words with its translation and to analyze the translation procedures chosen by the translator to fulfill the skopos of TT. There are four translation problems found in this research and they are: (1) a reference and concept in SL having no reference and concept in TL, (2) a reference and a concept in SL not lexicalized in TL, (3) TL lacking of specific words, and (4) different perspective between SL and TL in viewing a reference. To deal with those translation problems, there are 9 procedures applied by the translator that include explicitation, generalization, literal, calque, couplet (transference and footnote, transposition and cultural equivalent, transposition and functional equivalent), cultural equivalent, descriptive equivalent, functional equivalent, and transference. TT fulfills its skopos through the translation procedures applied by considering the ST’s context. According to the review of TT readers, TT is considered succeed to maintain the writer’s language of style and give the nuance of ST’s culture. The footnote also helps TT readers to understand ST cultural words but minimizes readers’ comfort in reading.

Abstract

Linguistic landscape (LL) points to linguistic objects that signify the public space.  (Ben-Rafael, Shohamy, et al. 2006). This concept addresses a number of topics such as social, political, cultural, until the economy. Through the study of LL, the author explored the main streets (râjamârga) of the Yogyakarta Palace, from its function as the identification of place names or informational function, and for messages or symbolic function. In order to achieve comprehensive results, author used qualitative approach through analysis visual data (photography) of sign of street names. The finding is confirmed two functions of linguistic landscapes: a) sign of street names as informational functions such as, to refer the place as well as the social space of Javanese which depicted an ethnic group; the orthographic of hanacaraka asserted language boundary; b) sign of street names as symbolic functions e.g. contained a ton of meaning (ccording to philosophy Paraning Dumadi), delineated Javanese as group identity, Javanese as their own indigenous language, linked between the power of government and place naming, even related to economic purpose through attract tourists visit Yogyakarta.

Abstract

Misty poetry or 朦胧诗 menglongshi is a poem that appeared in the era of the 70s during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). The emergence of a new kind of poetry that is different from the previous poem marks a new way of writing poetry in China. Its uniqueness is in wordplay, metaphor, synesthesia, and symbols that are not open to its meaning. This new type of Misty poem also received attention from the Chinese government, because behind the symbols and sequence of sentences contain thoughts that are considered not in accordance with the government. Among these Misty wing poets, Bei Dao and Gu Cheng were two important poets. This paper reviews two poems of Bei Dao and two poems by Gu Cheng on the intrinsic element that contains imagery and style of language to understand the meaning. Furthermore, In order to support the analysis, this research also reviews the extrinsic elements to gain the whole meaning of the poetry. Therefore, the explanation of the Cultural Revolution is very important for this analysis. This analysis will explain how this Misty poems play an important role to explain the Cultural Revolution through the works of Bei Dao and Gu Cheng.
