Abstract

Abstract. English Education Department at IAIN Kudus is new study program. Nevertheless, the number of the students is always increased every year. This study aims to get information related to the educational background of students, analyze their motivation and expectation in joining English Education Department IAIN Kudus and analyze their ways in realizing the expectations. This study was descriptive qualitative research. It was conducted at English Education Department, IAIN Kudus. The subjects were 204 students from the first to third academic year. Data were collected through questionnaire, interview and document analysis. The results showed that 20,6% are boys and 79,4% are girls. 44, 6% of the students graduated from science program, 26 % from social program, 12,3 % from language program and the rest were from religion, computer and network engineering, sharia banking, accountancy and administration. They take and study English because of internal and external motivation. The internal factors are needs, plan, pleasure and meaning. And the external factors are learning environment, career, society and others. For the expectation, they expect to have class with clear curriculum, Students Centered Learning (SCL) and teaching media that meets their needs so they are able to develop English skills and be good English teacher/educator. And the students? ways in realizing their expectations are studying hard, critical thinking, using appropriate media and having partner.Keywords: educational background, students? motivation and expectation, ways Abstrak. Tadris Bahasa Inggris di IAIN Kudus adalah program studi baru. Namun, jumlah mahasiswa selalu bertambah setiap tahun. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan informasi terkait latar belakang pendidikan siswa, menganalisis motivasi dan harapan mereka untuk bergabung dengan Tadris Bahasa Inggris IAIN Kudus dan menganalisis cara mereka dalam mewujudkan harapan mereka. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif di Tadris Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris IAIN Kudus. Responden sejumlah 204 mahasiswa dari tahun akademik pertama hingga ketiga. Data dikumpulkan melalui kuesioner, wawancara, dan analisis dokumen. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 20,6% adalah laki-laki dan 79,4% adalah perempuan. 44, 6% dari mereka lulus dari program sains, 26% dari program sosial, 12,3% dari program bahasa dan sisanya dari agama, teknik komputer dan jaringan, perbankan syariah, akuntansi dan administrasi. Mereka kuliah di TBI IAIN Kudus karena adanya motivasi internal dan eksternal. Faktor internal adalah kebutuhan, rencana, minat dan makna. Dan faktor eksternal adalah lingkungan belajar, karier, masyarakat dan lain-lain. Mereka berharap memiliki kurikulum yang jelas, Student Centered Learning (SCL) dan media pengajaran yang memenuhi kebutuhan mereka sehingga mereka dapat mengembangkan keterampilan bahasa Inggris dan menjadi guru / pendidik bahasa Inggris yang baik. Abstract

Abstract. The study employed qualitative approach because the data were students? responses on Google Forms, and students? midterm score. It was aimed to exploring the use of Google forms in assessing students? knowledge of the materials of Introduction to Linguistics. The materials were given until the sixth meetings in the Odd Semester of 2019/2020 were linguistics, the phonological term, pronunciation of certain words, the morphological formation and construction. Eleven questions on  Google forms were in multiple choice, checkbox, multiple choice/checkbox grid, and short answer. The study has found that most of the students in Class A and Class B firstly used Google forms as the assessment tool with duration was set. Google form is useful for the teacher and students because it provides automatic calculation which enables effective and efficient feedback for the students to learn their mistakes. The study also found that auto grading on Google forms only calculates the correct answers which marked in the answer key feature. Thus, it would be suitable for grading questions in multiple choice and multiple choice grid, questions in checkboxes, short answer, and checkbox grid still needs manual grading. After comparing the score of assessment on Google Forms and midterm test, it can be concluded that students? score was improved significantly after the assessment.Keywords: Google Forms, assessment, generation-Z, students? learning needsAbstrak. Penelitian in imenggunakan pendekatan kualitatif mengingat data yang digunakan adalah respon mahasiswa dari Google Form, dan nilai Ujian Tengah Semester Mahasiswa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui penggunaan Google form dalam menial pengetahuan mahasiswa akan materi mata kuliah Introduction to Linguistics. Materi-materi yang siberian hinge minggu keenam di Semester Ganjil than ajaran 2019/2020 adalah linguistik, istilah fonologi, pengucapan kata-kata tertentu, pembentukan dan konstruksi morfologis. Sebelas pertanyaan di Google Forms dalam bentuk pilihan ganda, kotak centang, kisi pilihan ganda/kotak centang, dan jawaban singkat. Penelitian ini telah menemukan bahwa sebagian besar mahasiswa Kelas A dan Kelas B baru pertama kali menggunakan Google Forms sebagai alat penilaian dengan durasi yang telah ditetapkan. Pada praktinya, Google Forms berguna bagi dosen dan mahasiswa karena adanya penghitungan otomatis yang memungkinkan umpan balik yang efektif dan efisien kepada mahasiswa untuk mempelajari kekeliruan mereka.Penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa penilaian otomatis Google Forms hanya menghitung jawaban benar yang ditandai di figure kunci jawaban. Sehingga, penghitungan nilai hanya berlaku pada sol dengan pilihan ganda dan kisi pilihan ganda, penghitungan nilai secara manual masih harus dilakukan pada sol dalam bentuk kotak centang, kisi kotak centang dan jawaban singkat. Setelah membandingkan nilai pada Google Forms dan Ujian Tengah Semester, ditemukan bahwa nilai mahasiswa meningskat cukup signifikan setelah penilaian dengan Google Forms.Kata kunci: Google Forms, penilaian, generasi-Z, kebutuhan pembelajaran mahasiswa.

Abstract

Abstract. This scientific article is entitled "Synchronizing between Lasswell's Communication Model and Abrams' Critical Orientation as a Sophisticated Concept of Literary Communication and Its Associated Studies". By using a multidisciplinary study, one study in solving a problem using various points of view of many relevant sciences in this case, such as literature and communication science, the research question of this article is synchronizing between Lasswell?s Communication Model and Abrams' Critical Orientation as a Sophisticated Concept of Literary Communication and Its Associated Studies. The literature review used as a scientific foundation in conducting this theoretical review, among others, is Nature of Literature and Literary Works, Sigmund Freud?s Psychoanalytic: Mind Structure and Topography, Intertextuality Act, Mayer Howard Abrams? Critical Orientation, and Harold Dwight Lasswell?s Communication Model. The design of this article represents a theoretical review of a comparative study between communication science and literary studies. The technique of data analysis used is Lasswell's model to describe components of literary communication and its associated studies. The results of this article are the components of literary communication consisting of the source as the ideas, the artist as the communicator, the main idea in literary work as the message, the figurative language as media, and the audience as the receiver, and impact as the effect. The studies of each component are that mimetic, expressive, objective, and pragmatic studies.Keywords: communication, component, model, studies, synchronizingAbstrak. Artikel ilmiah ini berjudul "Sinkronisasi antara Model Komunikasi Lasswell dan Orientasi Kritis Abrams sebagai Konsep Canggih Komunikasi Sastra dan Studi Terkait". Dengan menggunakan studi multidisiplin, satu studi dalam memecahkan masalah menggunakan berbagai sudut pandang banyak ilmu yang relevan dalam kasus ini, seperti sastra dan ilmu komunikasi, pertanyaan penelitian dari artikel ini adalah sinkronisasi antara Model Komunikasi Lasswell dan Orientasi Kritis Abrams sebagai Konsep Canggih Komunikasi Sastra dan Studi Terkait. Tinjauan literatur yang digunakan sebagai landasan ilmiah dalam melakukan tinjauan teoretis ini, antara lain adalah Sifat Karya Sastra dan Sastra, Psikoanalitik Sigmund Freud: Struktur dan Topografi Pikiran, Tindakan Antartekstualitas, Orientasi Kritis Mayer Howard Abrams, dan Model Komunikasi Harold Dwight Lasswell . Desain artikel ini merupakan tinjauan teoritis studi banding antara ilmu komunikasi dan studi sastra. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah model Lasswell untuk menggambarkan komponen komunikasi sastra dan studi terkaitnya. Hasil dari artikel ini adalah komponen komunikasi sastra yang terdiri dari sumber sebagai ide, artis sebagai komunikator, ide utama dalam karya sastra sebagai pesan, bahasa kiasan sebagai media, dan audiens sebagai penerima, dan dampak sebagai efek. Abstract. In this article, several reading theories need to be reviewed in their relationships to read understanding educators and English lecturers. Three other Reading Models, Bottom-Up, Top-Down, and Interactive, are discussed in the Schema Theory at the theoretical stage. The history of reading training, kinds and purposes of reading, and cognitive reading abilities will be discussed in checking the reading understanding. Finally, it reviews six variables that are engaged in understanding English texts.Keywords: comprehension, models of reading, schema theoryAbstrak. Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to investigate the realisation of affect in Edgar Allan Poe?s short stories entitled The Tell-Tale Heart and The Black Cat. The short stories were analyzed using appraisal system adapted from Martin and White (2005). This study used qualitative method. The data are collected by using content analysis. The data were validated by 3 raters through Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The result shows that the most category of affect in The Tell-Tale Heart short story was ?Insecurity: Disquiet? (33,33%). Meanwhile, in The Black Cat short story, the most category of affect was Unhappiness: Antiphaty (22,09%), Insecurity: Disquiet (18,60%), and Inclination: Desire (15,11%).Keywords: affect, appraisal, Edgar Allan Poe, short storiesAbstrak. Abstract

Abstract. Industrial revolution 4.0 era which is also called as disruptive era gives many benefits for several aspects especially in education. It becomes easier for the teacher to use any kinds of media for teaching English and for the students to find English materials by themselves. The recent students of English Education Department IAIN Kudus belong to generation Z students. As generation Z students who live in 4.0 era, they are able to access many kinds of information or knowledge and improve their English competences from any resources easily. This paper aims to identify the way of the generation Z learn English, the difficulties encountered by them in learning English, and the solutions or suggestions to overcome the difficulties. This study employed mixed methods research. In conducting this research, the researchers used observation, open-ended questionnaire and documentation to collect the data. The participants were 39 students of English Education Department at IAIN Kudus. The results showed that 60% students use gadgets to study English, 15% use books, and 25% use both of them. Meanwhile, 50% students have difficulties in speaking, 10% in listening, 6% in reading, 17% in writing, and 17% in those four competences. Some solutions or suggestions were revealed to resolve the difficulties. The solutions were extended for each language competence.Keywords: English Competence, Generation Z, IAIN KudusAbstrak. Era revolusi industri 4.0, yang juga dikenal dengan era disruptif, memberikan banyak keuntungan dalam berbagai aspek khususnya dalam pendidikan. Hal ini akan memudahkan guru untuk menggunakan berbagai jenis media untuk mengajar Bahasa Inggris dan juga bagi mahasiswa untuk mencari materi Bahasa Inggris sendiri. Mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa Inggris IAIN Kudus juga termasuk mahasiswa generasi Z. Sebagai mahasiswa generasi Z yang tinggal di era 4.0, mereka mampu mengakses berbagai macam informasi atau pengetahuan untuk memperbaiki kompetensi mereka dari berbagai sumber dengan mudah. Paper ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi cara bagaimana generasi Z belajar Bahasa Inggris, kesulitan-kesulitan yang dihadapi mereka, dan solusi atau saran untuk menghadapi kesulitan tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode campuran (mixed methods), dan dalam mengumpulkan data penulis menggunakan teknik observasi, kuesioner, dan dokumentasi. Peserta penelitian ini adalah 39 mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa Inggris IAIN Kudus. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa cara mereka belajar 60 % menggunakan gawai, 15 % menggunakan buku, dan 25 % menggunakan dua-duanya. 50 % mahasiswa mengalami kesulitan dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris, 10 % mendengarkan, 6 % dalam membaca, 17 % dalam menulis, dan 17 % mengalami kesulitan dalam keempat-empatnya. Beberapa solusi ditawarkan untuk menghadapi masalah tersebut, terutama di masing-masing keahlian berbahasa.Kata kunci: kompetensi bahasa Inggris, generasi Z, IAIN Kudus

Abstract

This paper aims to explicate and examine one of the poems written by Goenawan Mohamad, Poem No. 15, which is included in his poem and poetic essay collection entitled Tuhan dan Hal-hal yang Tak Pernah Selesai, which was translated into On God and Other Unfinished Things by Laksmi Pamuntjak by applying Reiss’ method. This method scrutinizes the translation shift, especially the expression shift and the intralinguistic criteria comprising semantic, lexical, grammatical, and stylistic features. As a creative composition and a piece of literary work that illuminates the imaginative, emotional, and intellectual experience and creativity of its author, a poem is classified in the expressive text type based on Reiss’ text-type category. The result shows that there are several intralinguistic criteria and stylistic features maintained and also modified by the translator in the English translation of Goenawan Mohamad’s Poem No. 15 in On God and Other Unfinished Things, that is done not only to preserve the aesthetic dimension of the language used in the poem but also to fulfill the expressive function of the text. By employing various translation shifts and metaphor translation to make the target text more natural, preserving the relevant aspects of the semantic content, and taking the standpoint of the author in translating the poem, the English translation of Poem No. 15 can fulfill its quality assessment required by its expressive text type.

Abstract

Design thinking has become a new trend at schools in different countries. There are many educators who are eager to adopt Design thinking as an effective strategy for helping their students to learn through solving real-world problems. For Indonesian context, Design Thinking provides a new innovative ground of teaching English in EFL setting. Teachers engage the students in collaborative problem solving, creative challenge, and foster social –emotional balance and stability.  The paper portrays how the teacher conducts learning activities in the Empathy stage of Design Thinking to build students’ critical literacy from the start. The attitude domain of the appraisal theory is used to disclose the way of the teacher to guide the students to express their emotional reaction toward the story, to assess the behavior of the characters and construe the value of things in the text.The classroom discourse analysis shows that the teacher’s talk by employing the attitude resources plays important role in supporting the students to develop their critical thinking capacity and build their narrative’s content knowledge.The result of the study is expected to enrich the reference of appraisal discourse analysis theory and provide the example of the teaching practice for enhancing students’ critical thinking capacity in Narrative learning through Design Thinking pedagogy.

Abstract

Abstract. This study explores to find out the similarities, the differences, and the learning problems in a particular context, through a contrastive analysis. The researchers have employed a descriptive, qualitative method during the research since the aim of this study is to find out the similarities, differences, and the learning problems of English idiom and its Indonesian translation in the novel The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins (2015). Based on the analysis that has been done, the researchers have found out that there are 16 verbal idioms, 6 informal idioms, 4 idioms with special keywords, 2 idioms related to special themes, and 2 idiomatic pairs. About the similarities and differences, the researchers have concluded that there are 13 of 16 English idioms similar to its Indonesian translations and 3 of them different. In the informal idiom-type, there are 3 English idioms similar to its Indonesian translations and also there are 3 English idioms different from its Indonesian translations. In the idioms with special-keyword type, there is no English idiom similar to its Indonesian translation, but there are 4 English idioms that are different from its Indonesian translations. In the idioms related to special-theme type, there are 2 English idioms similar to its Indonesian translations and there is no difference. In the idiomatic-pair type, there are 2 English idioms similar to its Indonesian translations, but there is no difference in this type. Indonesian learners should note these similarities and differences between English idiom and its Indonesian translation in the novel, so they will not face learning problems or make translating mistakes when translating idioms from English into Indonesian. Penelitian ini bertujuan menemukan persamaan dan perbedaan, serta masalah belajar dalam konteks tertentu, dengan metode analisis kontrastif. Penelitian ini bersifat kualitatif deskriptif, untuk menemukan persamaan, perbedaan, dan masalah belajar atau penerjemahan idiom dari bahasa Inggris ke dalam bahasa Indonesia dari novel  The Girl on the Train karya Paula Hawkins (2015). Dari hasil analisis, ditemukan bahwa ada 16 verbal idioms, 6 informal idioms, 4 idioms with special keywords, 2 idioms related to special themes, dan  2 idiomatic pairs. Terkait  dengan persamaan dan perbedaan, disimpulkan berdasarkan hasil penelitian bahwa ada 13 dari 16 idiom bahasa Inggris yang sama dengan terjemahan bahasa Indonesia, dan 3 idiom yang berbeda. Dalam tipe  informal idiom, ada 3 idiom bahasa Inggris yang sama dengan terjemahan bahasa Indonesia, dan juga ada 3 idiom bahasa Inggris yang berbeda dari terjemahan bahasa Indonesia. Dalam tipe idioms with special keywords, idiom bahasa Inggris tidak ada yang sama dengan terjemahan  bahasa Indonesia, tapi ada 4 idiom bahasa Inggris yang berbeda dari terjemahan bahasa Indonesia. Dalam tipe  idioms related to special-theme type, ada 2 idiom bahasa Inggris yang sama dengan terjemahan bahasa Indonesia, namun tidak ada perbedaan. Dalam tipe idiomatic pair, ada 2 idiom bahasa Inggris yang sama dengan terjemahan bahasa Indonesia, namun tidak ada perbedaan. Pembelajar Indonesia harus mengenali persamaan dan perbedaan dari idiom bahasa Inggris dan terjemahan bahasa Indonesia yang ada di dalam novel, sehingga mereka tidak akan mengalami masalah belajar bahasa atau melakukan kesalahan penerjemahan ketika menerjemahkan idiom bahasa Inggris ke dalam bahasa Indonesia. Hal ini sangat penting, utamanya terkait dengan penerjemahan yang harus memperhatikan perbedaan yang ada antara idiom bahasa Inggris dan bahasa Indonesia. Abstract

Abstract. Comic is one of the popular literary works that combining pictures and languages. It can be a work if it consist of story that using language as the medium. The aims of this study is to explain the formula of the comic by using theories of comic, escapism, and the narration’s structure of an adventure comics, The Life and Times Of Scrooge McDuck created by Don Rosa. To get relevant data, this study is employ one method, namely; library study. In this paper, the writer used theories of comic by Scott McCloud, escapism by Cawelty, and the narration’s structure of Vladimir Propp. The result indicates that in this comic, there is the reality of the idea that the existence of the main character is manifested by the presence of the villains. Comic is a complete books that can teaching the reader which is not only understand the stories, but also the world view inside, it is the good  ideology of the existence from the bad side.Keywords: comic, escapism, narration, existence, and the villains.Abstrak. Komik adalah salah satu karya sastra populer yang menggabungkan gambar dan bahasa. Hal ini dapat bekerja jika itu terdiri dari cerita yang menggunakan bahasa sebagai media. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menjelaskan formula komik dengan menggunakan teori komik, melepaskan diri, dan narasi struktur komik petualangan, hidup dan Gober Bebek dibuat oleh Don Rosa. Untuk mendapatkan data yang relevan, studi ini menggunakan satu teknik, yaitu; studi perpustakaan. Dalam tulisan ini, penulis menggunakan teori Komik oleh Scott McCloud, eskapisme oleh Cawelty, dan struktur narasi Vladimir Propp. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa di komik ini, ada realitas gagasan bahwa keberadaan karakter utama diwujudkan oleh kehadiran penjahat. Komik sebuah bacaan yang berisi, mendidik, dan berbobot, karena melalui komik pembaca tidak hanya memahami ceritanya saja, tetapi realitas ide di baliknya, yakni ideologi baik dari keberadaan si pelaku kejahatan.Kata kunci: komik, eskapisme, narasi, keberadaan, dan para penjahat.
