Abstract

The aims of this research were to discover: (1) the effect of technical skill on tutor’s performance, (2) the effect of attitude towards profession on tutor’s performance, (3) the effect of work environment on tutor’s performance, (4) the effect of attitude toward profession on tutor’s technical skill, (5) the effect of work environment on tutor’s technical skill, (6) the indirect effect of attitude towards profession on tutor’s performance through tutor’s technical skill, and (7) the indirect effect of work environment on tutor’s performance through tutor’s technical skill. Using causal survey with path analysis, the research was conducted at 7 Sanggar Kegiatan Belajar in West Java from July 2007 to January 2008. Samples were determined by multistage random sampling technique over 125 respondents. The steps of the research were as follow: conducting pre-survey and tryout for instrument, collecting data, analyzing data, and writing dissertation. The research found out five significant direct effects, namely: (1) technical skill on tutor’s performance, (2) attitude towards profession on tutor’s performance, (3) work environment on tutor’s performance, (4) attitude towards profession on tutor’s technical skill, and (5) work environment on tutor’s technical skill. The study also showed two indirect effects: attitude towards profession on tutor’s performance through tutor’s technical skill, and work environment on tutor’s performance through tutor’s technical skill. The research concludes that tutor’s performance can be improved through attitude towards profession, work environment and technical skill.

Abstract

Lesson study is an approach in improving the teacher’s competence through colaborative and continuous analysis of the instruction based on collegial and mutual learning principles. This approach includes teacher’s participation to be active in small discussion group. This research was conducted to develop lesson study approach to improve the competence of functional literacy tutors. Viewed from the methodology employed, the research which was conducted in Sukolilo Sub-District, Surabaya, is classified as an action research. To meet the objectives, the research was undertaken in four cycles as from November 2007 through February 2008. The results show there is a significant improvement of the functional literacy tutors’ competence.Based on the experience in conducting this action research, some recommendations are given in the application of lesson study model.

Abstract

This research aimed at discovering the effects of ability to respond the tutor’s narration and mastery of vocabulary to speaking skill of Package C students in Kendal Learning Activity Cente(LAC). The research population covered the Package C students of the second grade. Sampels were selected randomly and a set of test was used to collect the data to be analysed statistacally. The findings show that the ability to respond the tutor’s narration and vocabulary mastery give significant contribution to the speaking ability of the Package C students in Kendal LAC. Based on the findings, the research recommends narrative approach model as one of the techniques in learning vocabulary.

Abstract

Leaning is expected to be the process of cultural transformation and an attempt to manage the environments which give nuance for students to grow and develop with optimum. Multicultural approach is designed by focusing on the importance of social pluralism, multicultural, ethnics and contextualizing. In multicultural approach, the process of education is centered on students or certain community in which the teachers understand beliefs and values of socio cultural students in the context of society culture in designing learning model. In order to introduce a new mathemtics concept to the students, teachers have to relate the concepts known by students before. By using the contexts related to culture known by the students, it will make students feel that knowledge has been part of them and students will not feel it as something new, so that students will feel their learning meaningful. Based on constructivism view, if students feel that knowledge has been part of them and learning is meaningful, students will be motivated to find their own way to keep and get deeper on knowledge in their study. Their attempt to find their own way itself is the main point of constructivism learning. Thus, by using this approach it is expected there will be a new belief system in a theory and concept based on the culture known by students, so that that culture can be applied and kept continually through the way of thinking, ttpoint of view and ways of doing something had by young generation. The result of the study reveals that understanding toward mathematics concept of students using multicultural appraoch is better than those using common appraoch.

Abstract

Learning Activity Center (LAC) provides the local community with several kinds of educational services. The existence of the LAC is appricated on the basis of the benefits the community gained and the quality of the services often comes up as a problem. This research aimed at assessing the quality of educational services provided by LAC in Situbondo District along the academic year of 2008 – 2009. To measure the service quality SERVQUAL model was employed and the research population covered Package A, B, and C participants, attendants of cources, the participants of functional litracy programs, and the parents of early childhood education. The measurement covers reliability of the services, sensitivity, assurance, and emphaty. The result of the study shows some weakness in the services to improve later aside from the positive achievement.

Abstract

Within last ten years, the Indonesian government has been implementing decentralization policy by giving autonomous authority to the regions to strengthen the local goverments and to develop their areas. The decentralization policy is expected to motivate the local government and people to accelerate the development including human resource development. This study aimed at describing how the decentralization and the autonomous authority effected the quality improvement of the non-formal education and the tutors at Learning Activity Center (LAC) in Sumbawa. Using qualitative approach, this research collected data by observation and interview to analyze qualitatively.The analysis concludes that there is no significant improvement of non-formal education program and personnel.Besides, the local government’s policy does not encourage the development of non-formal education programs. Finally, it can be concluded that the existing autonomy does not stimulate the development of non-formal education and personnel.

Abstract

Most of the learners in the literacy program are adult people with various backgrounds. In teaching them the tutors should well consider the learners’ characteristics. This article discusses how to use andragogy approach in teaching the adult learners particularly in the literacy program. The difference between paedagogy and andragogy is clarified, and the role of tutor is specified in applying the andragogy approach in non formal education in general and in literacy program in particular.

Abstract

Non-formal education provides various kinds of educational services to improve the quality of human resources in Indonesia. The teachers and education personnel in non-formal education play a very important role to reach the educational goals. In implementing the non-formal education program, tutors act as front liners and simultanously they also function as the agents empowering the communitites. A tutors functions non only as a teacher, but also as a change agent and information source for the learning communities. To complete their tasks, this article thinks the urgent needs to improve the tutors’ competence. Quoting the tutors’ competence lists identified by The Standardization Board of National Education, this article discusses the possible efforts to improve the tutors’ competence to enable the to perform their tasks including to community empowering.

Abstract

Of the opinion that one of the crucial problems in improving the quality of equivalency education is related to the instructional strategy, this article focuses the discussion on the cooperative learning with expert discusson model as an alternative solution. Beside elaborating the procedures and techniques of implementing this instructional strategy as from planning through evaluation, it is believed that this strategy can be applied in conducting the programs of Package A, B, and C. The ideas proposed are expected to be useful for the teachers and tutors to improve the quality of equivqlency education in Indonesia. This strategy is also an answer to achieve instructional process standard of equivalency education as required in the National Education Minister’s Degree of No. 3 in 2008.

Abstract

Mathematics is a difficult and dull subject for most of the students in formal education and non-formal eduaction. Many students are not interested to study this subject and find hard to understand. Meanwhile mathematics is much used in the other subjects and needed to improve the student’s intellectual skill. This article introduces an innovative technique to overcome the students’s difficulties in counting quadrate in mathematics by using fingers which is very practical and easy to use. Based on the experience, this technique can successful improve the learning achievement of Package B students and motivate them to learn mthematics.
