Abstract

The aim of this paper was to examine the effect of spatial variability of hydraulic conductivity, commonly existing in nature, on rainfall-induced failures of residual soil slopes. Parametric study was carried out at typically residual soil slopes with two distinctively different types of hydraulic conductivity, high (ks=10-4 m/s) and low (ks=10-6 m/s) conductivity, in Singapore. Finite element method was applied in this slope stability analysis using commercial SVFlux and SVSlope software in a couple manner. Rainfall intensity was varied as a fraction of the hydraulic conductivity. As a result, greater spatial variability of saturated hydraulic conductivity affects more noticeably the instability of both high and low-conductivity soil slopes exposed to high-rainfall intensity (I > 0.05 ks for high-conductivity slopes and I >1 ks for low- conductivity slopes). However, there was a negligible effect of spatial variability of hydraulic conductivity on the instability of slopes subjected to low-rainfall intensity, even this spatial variability tended to slightly increase the stability of high-conductivity slopes.

Abstract

Corncob contains xylan content of 12.4 - 12.9% which can be converted to xylitol [1]. Xylitol significantly reduces the population of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) in saliva compared with fluoride [3]. The effectiveness of xylitol from corn cobs waste is an antibacterial substance of S. mutans in safe and water-soluble mouthwash. The purpose of this research is to produce xylitol from corn cobs waste and to test the xylitol inhibition as anti bacterial in S. mutans bacteria. The xylitol extraction method of corncob using aqueous sulfuric acid is 0.25; 0.5; 0.75 and 1.0%. The extraction time was then varied from 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 min. The results showed xylitol compound from corn tuna waste was highest at 0.25% sulfuric acid concentration with 30 minutes hydrolysis time of 249.7 ppm and the lowest at 0.75% acid concentration and hydrolysis time of 90 minutes is 5.6 ppm. Xylitol compounds can be obtained from corn cobs waste has the value of inhibitory growth of S. Mutans bacteria in all variations of acid concentration (H2SO4) and hydrolysis time is 100%.

Abstract

Due to development of technology in recent years, complexity and nonlinearity of mechanical and electrical system are increasing significantly. Inverted pendulum is nonlinear system that has become popular in recent years. However, inverted pendulum is nonlinear and unstable system. Therefore appropriate design controller of inverted pendulum system is crucial. Hence, this paper proposed, design of inverted pendulum system based on imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA). In order to design the controller, dynamic model of inverted pendulum system is used. Time domain simulation is used to address the controller performance. From the simulation result, it is found that imperialist competitive algorithm can be used to design inverted pendulum system controller.

Abstract

Biringkanaya and Tamalanrea sub-districts areMakassar's eastern suburbs that experience urban sprawl.Regional sprawl (urban sprawl) which occurs one of them isindicated due to uncontrolled housing cluster growth. Thephenomenon of urban sprawl has an impact on city morphology,transportation systems, environment and energy. This study aimsto analyze the distribution pattern and density level of housingclusters in Biringkanaya and Tamalanrea sub-districts throughmapping housing clusters in the region. This research method iscarried out by survey for primary data collection in the form ofhousing cluster and area using Garmin 76 CSX which will becombined with Quickbird imagery maps using Quantum GIS,then digitizing buildings from GPS data overlay and image maps.The results of this study are clear spatial data in the form of adigital map based on geographic information about the positionand density of residential clusters in Biringkaya Subdistrict andTamalanrea District, Makassar City. From the results of thisanalysis found housing cluster patterns in these two sub-districtsscattered following the Independence Pioneering arterial pathwith a spawling pattern, besides that it also uses a dominopattern and fills between one housing and another. AlsoBiringkanaya Subdistrict is the most populous sub-district of itshousing cluster compared to Kecamatan Tamalanrea.

Abstract

In the soil there are many compound of Fe and Mn as well as in the clay. Those two compounds need to be reduced to improve the resistive value of the clay. One method to reduce those compounds is by electromagnetic filter using solenoid. From the experiment circuit, it was found that the resistive value was 4.5 Ohm with maximum current of 5 Ampere. Concentration of Fe and Mn after filtered were 0.46 ppm and 0.40 ppm respectively.

Abstract

Batubara asal desa Mallawa , Kabupaten Bone Sulawesi Selatan termasuk batubara peringkat rendah jenis subbituminus type C Hasil analisis kimia menunjukkan kadar air 2.64%, kadar zat terbang 46.16%, kadar abu 15.26%, kadar karbon terikat 35.96%, kadar sulfur 2.19% dan nilai kalor 5190 kkal/kgram. Dengan proses desulfurisasi menggunakan larutan HCl 20% dan demineralisasi menggunakan larutan NaOH 20%, dilanjutkan dengan proses karbonisasi atau pembakaran pada suhu 400oC dalam tungku pembakaran dengan sedikit udara . Hasilnya kadar air 1,66%, kadar zat terbang 13,35%, kadar abu 6,78%, kadar karbon terikat 78,21%, kadar sulfur 0,43% dan nilai kalor 7097,24 kkal/kgram. Berdasarkan ASTM D338 dan SNI 13–6011-1999 batubara hasil penelitian termasuk dalam type atau rank low volatile bittuminus type C

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of using plastic waste Low Density polyethylene ( LDPE ) on the characteristics of a mixture of AC- WC . This study used five plastic content variation is 1 % , 2 % , 3 % , 4 % , and 5 % to determine the characteristics of the AC- WC . The method used in this study is a test that aims marshall know the characteristics , the performance of the mixture , and the optimum level of use of asphalt in the mix AC- WC . The results showed that the characteristic value AC- WC that include the percentage of plastic content obtained from the testing of 1 % -5 % of the optimum bitumen content , if the levels of plastic in bitumen is added, the value of stability , flow , and marshall quotient increase and decrease unstable , while the value of VFB and the density increases, and the value of VIM and VMA decreases.

Abstract

On this research have observed liquid smoke’s ability to pursue microbe activity, antimicrobe and antioxidant compounds in betel oleoresin, give preservation effect by pursue microorganism’s growth on Chanos-chanos forsk. Fish Submerge process by liquid smoke with betel oleoresin submerge on pre-smoking, give optimum result value of TVB 8,62 mg N/100gr, reach on submerge by betel oleoresin 6% concentration, during 15 minutes, and submerge with liquid smoke 4% concentration during 10 minutes. Value of total microbe 6,06 x 10 3 CFU. Result above has contribution with censor examination of rather hard texture and much liked flavor.

Abstract

Aluminum alloys in this study using a mixture of aluminum profiles and former piston. Former piston is used to get the high enough of element Si. The addition of TiB element (Titanium-Boron) as much as 0.02% at the time of casting expected to improve the mechanical and physical character of aluminum, so that expected the aluminum alloy has a strength that is much better than without the addition of any element. Aluminum alloy to manufacture screw will be casted by using sand molds on three types of variations mold temperature 200oC, 300oC and 400oC. The Test were conducted to determine the mechanical properties of the aluminum alloy and physical that are : tensile test, hardness test, and metallographic with an optical microscope. The maximum test result occurred in Al-Si alloy material with TiB addition 0.02% and a heating temperature mold 400oC produces maximum tensile stress of 628.86 N / mm², while for Vickers Hardness Number (VHN) gives the figure of 114 kg / mm2; and for the results obtained from the data metallographic structure formed hypereutectic silicon which form the primary silicon phase. That phase provides high wear resistance. Finally, it is evident that the Al-Si alloys mentioned above can improve the properties of aluminum to manufacture a screw.

Abstract

This study aims to review the use of vertical datumand determine the elevation of seawall constructions based on thesea level design. The sea level design used as a vertical referenceis MSL and LWS. The elevation of the seawall construction fromthe two references above then compared to the elevation of theseawall construction listed in the as built drawing documentduring construction. The MSL value is obtained from the tidalanalysis by using Doodson method based on direct observationfor 39 hours, while the LWS value is obtained by taking intoaccount the position of the range of tide at Tide Station inMakassar. Seawall elevation is obtained by terrestrialmeasurements using the Total Station by measuring the height ofthe top position of the seawall construction against the sea leveldesign through the Bench Mark. The seawall top elevation datacollection is done every one meter along 274 meters. The resultsobtained from measuring seawall construction elevation are +2,251 meters if using reference to MSL and +2,911 meters if usinga reference to LWS, while the elevation in the as built drawingdocument is +4,000 meters unknown what vertical reference isused as a reference.
