Abstract

The aim of the study is to identify the use of parts of speech in speaking. In this study, the descriptive qualitative method was used to find and analyze types of parts of speech from the speaker?s talk. This study is based on Critical Discourse Analysis which was developed from the Systematic Functional Grammar (Halliday, 1971). In the current study, within a descriptive qualitative, critical discourse analysis approach was used. The data were taken from the TED-Talk video. The findings show that the speaker employs various types of parts of speech. Also, it can be identified that the use of modal verbs helps the speaker to be close to the audience while communicating the point of view relating to the topic. Moreover, personal pronouns may shorten the distance between the speaker and listeners on the event. Furthermore, using personal pronouns can help the speaker focus on the topic and associate the words into the real context.

Abstract

A grade that students received after learning a writing course determines their writing performance in the course. Quite rare for writing instructors, especially those who teach in the EFL setting in a parallel classroom setting of more than one, to reflect on what does it mean to assess a piece of writing composed by EFL students. Therefore, this research was conducted to investigate the aspect above. It is action research in nature. Data were collected from 102 students? final examination answer sheets. The instrument used is analytical scoring rubrics. Findings show that the different raters might show a similar pattern of using the scoring rubrics, but the tendency of arriving at the same conclusion for each item in the scoring rubrics is low.

Abstract

This research was aimed at describing the extent to which the grade 10,11, and 12 students acquire the paragraph development of exposition paragraph writing and to describe the process of acquiring the paragraph development. The development of exposition paragraph was analyzed by following the theory of Knapp Watkins (2009:152) that consists of text structure and lexico-grammar. The text structure is used to see the logical flow of ideas from the beginning until the end of the paragraph, while the lexico-grammar refers to the wordings to form meaning. To achieve the objectives of this study, this research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design which relied on words to describe the phenomena. The data was analyzed following Miles et.al? s model. The research finding showed that first, the students from grade 10,11, and 12 had not acquired the development of exposition paragraph writing since they only put thesis statement, argument, but there was no conclusion. Second, the development of exposition paragraph could not be explained since the subjects did not relate the thesis statement to the argument and they did not provide conclusion. However, the development can be seen through the greater use of lexico-grammar from grade 10, 11 until 12.
