Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out politeness strategies used by Joe Louis Clark and the students in the Lean on Me movie and to find out the dominant types of politeness strategy used by Joe Louis Clark in the movie. This research uses descriptive qualitative approach. The data were in the form of utterances which contains politeness strategies. The data source is Lean on Me movie script. The data are collected by note-taking technique which were later classified and analyzed under the theories of Brown and Levinson (1987). The result of this research shows that there are four types of politeness strategies used by the main characters in Lean on Me movie when having conversation with the students and teacher. The politeness strategies were Bald-on record strategy, Positive politeness strategy, Negative politeness strategy, and Off record strategy. Positive politeness strategy has the highest frequency among other strategies since the dialogues are among teacher and students.Keywords: politeness interaction, interaction among teacher and students,positive politeness strategy

Abstract

This research aims to describe the use of comic strip in teaching English vocabulary to seventh graders of SMPN 3 Poso. This research is qualitative in nature, where the data are collected through observation. The findings show that the teaching and learning process was conducted in two meetings and test was administered after the meetings, and all students show satisfied achievement when comic strip is used in teaching and learning activities (27% are excellent, 63,6% students are good, and 9,0% students are good).Keywords: vocabulary acquisition, comic strips

Abstract

In past days, the educational researchers often dichotomize qualitative and quantitative methods since the characteristics of both methods are different. Nowadays, there is awareness among the researchers to combine these methods due to providing more valid and accurate data for their research. Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out the roles of teacher in dangerous mind movie. It focused on LouAnne Johnson as main character in the movie limited the interaction between teacher and students in the classroom. Descriptive qualitative was used as the research design. The Dangerous Minds movie is source of data in this research. In collecting the data, the researcher used documentation method. There are four roles of teacher in this movie: assessor; prompter, tutor, and observer. Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether crossword puzzle is effective in improving students? vocabulary mastery. The sample of this research is the eight grade students of SMP GKST I Tentena particularly class VIIIC and VIII A. This research is quasi experimental design- the nonequivalent control group design, that involved two sample groups, they are experimental group and control group. The researcher uses clustering sampling. The researcher applies test instrument (Pre-test and Post-test) in collecting the data. The pre-test is administered to measure the students? achievement in learning vocabulary before treatment, while the post-test is administered to measure the students? achievement after treatment. Based on the result of the study, it is proved that the application of crossword puzzle is affective in improving students? vocabulary mastery. It is found that the tcounted (1.820) is higher that t-table (1.693). It means that the hypothesis of this research is accepted. In conclusion, the achievement of the eight grade students of SMP GKST I Tentena in mastering vocabulary can be improved significantly by using crossword puzzle.Keywords: Crossword Puzzle, Improve, Vocabulary Mastery

Abstract

The objective of this study was to identify the students? needs of English Study Program in learning English for Tourism. The type of this study was qualitative descriptive method. The subjects of the study were fourth semester students in academic year 2015/2016 consisted of 44 students. Data were gathered through questionnaire and analyzed descriptively, then interpreted by the researcher. Thefindings of the study revealed that the students felt necessary to learn EFT for their education and career in the future. The students learned EFT to know the description of tourism language and to know everything related to English. Since the students lacked in speaking and writing, their priority in this course had to be on speaking and writing skills that could be done in various activities, for instance, through discussion method. At the end of learning process, the students responded that homework was very important for them. It is expected that the result of the study can be used as a reference to prepare and develop relevant materials for students? academic and professional needs, especially English for Tourism learning need.Keywords: English for Tourism, students? needs.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the influence of Chain Drill Technique in teaching speaking to the tenth grade students at SMAN 1 Poso, particularly in describing an object. This research is quantitative in nature and the design was pre-experimental. The researcher applied pre-test and post-test in collecting the data. The result of data analysis shows chain drill technique in teaching speaking can increase students speaking achievement in describing an object.Keywords: chain drill, technique, speaking achievement

Abstract

This paper presents the analysis of misunderstanding occurred in conversations which is caused different misinterpretation of speech act between the speaker and hearer that come from different cultures. Misunderstanding occurred in the conversation causes various emotional effect to the hearer, for example feeling happy, funny, embarrassed, sorry, or has self-assumption and impression of the speaker?s utterance. The data are taken from Facebook chatting, then they are analyzed under the theories of pragmatics area, especially speech act theory of Austin (1955). Therefore, this paper will try to convey how the misinterpretation of speech act labels affects the participants in the conversation.Keywords: speech acts, conversation, misunderstanding

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out level of questions used by the teachers in teaching English at SMP Negeri Poso Kota Utara and to find out of students? responses from the teacher?s questions. Researcher uses descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research is obtained from observation at SMP5 Poso Kota Utara and SMP 1 Poso Kota Utara. The result of this research showsthat knowledge, comprehension and evaluation are the most frequently used levelof questions, while the students? responses are correct, incomplete, and no response.Keywords: levels of question, Bloom?s taxonomy, EFL teachers, EFL students

Abstract

The aims of this research are: (1) To describe how the teacher teach the students about WH question, and; (2) To find out how far the students have competence to product WH question in English at the SMPN Satu Atap Uelincu. This research was a qualitative. Data were collected from observation and interview. The sources of data were students and English teacher. The findings show that EFL students at the SMP Negeri Satu Atap Uelincu have a good competence to use the pattern of WH question in English.Keywords: patterns, WH questions
