Abstract

One disadvantage of crude palm oil (CPO) as a feedstuff is its property of rapidly being rancid, and thus could decrease quality and palatability of ration. To over come the problem, an antioxidant is needed to prevent lipid deterioration. The aim of this research was to prevent lipid deterioration in broiler ration containing CPO using garlic and cumin as antioxidants. The experimental run in a factorial arrangement according to completely randomized design with 2 factors and 3 replications for each treatment combination. The first factors were either A1= control ration, A2= control ration + 0.2% garlic, A3= control ration + 0.4% garlic, A4= control ration + 0.6% garlic, A5= control ration + 0.02% BHT or B1= control ration, B2= control ration + 0.2% cumin, B3= control ration + 0.4% cumin, B4= control ration + 0.6% cumin, B5= control ration + 0.02% BHT. Butyl hidroksitoluena (BHT) is a synthetic antioxidant. The second factors were duration of storage, i.e. P1= 0 week, P2= 2 weeks, P3= 4 weeks. Parameters observed were water content, fat content and free fatty acid content of the ration. The results of the experiment indicated that use of both antioxidant garlic and cumin decreased (P<0.05) free fatty acid content and fat content, but the former did not affect water content as the later did. The best ration was ration containing either 0.6% garlic or 0.4% cumin as an antioxidant which was indicated by a decrease in free fatty acid and lipid contents so that could slow down lipid deterioration in the ration. Use of garlic 0.6% or cumin 0.4% was better compared with the use of BHT 0.02%. Results also indicated that storage time affected (P<0.01) parameters in terms of increasing water content, free fatty acid content, and decreasing fat content

Abstract

The purpose of research was to investigate the influence of steamed preconditioning the pellet on water content, water activity (Aw), physical appearance and pellet fineness. The experiment was carried out in 2 x 3 factorial arrangement according to completely randomized design with 3 replications for each treatment combination. The factor A is the pellet-making process (steam/MBS and non steam/MBNS), while factor B is the length of storage (0, 2 and 4 weeks). The parameters observed were water content, water activity, physical appearance and pellet fineness. Data were  analyzed by  STASTS program version  2.6  and followed by Multiple Range Test if the treatments were significant. The results showed that  treatment with MBS or MBNS and the length of storage did not affect physical appearance (colour, smell and taste) of the pellet. MBS treatment significantly reduced water contents of pellet compared with MBNS treatment (12.04 vs 11.45%) and significantly increased water activity (0.75 vs 0.80). The length of storage (0, 2 and 4 weeks) increased water content of pellet, i.e. 10.84, 12.02 and 12.47%, respectively. In conclusion, steamed preconditioning treatment (MBS) reduced water content and increased water activity of pellet, while  the length of storage significantly increased water content and water activity but reduced pellet fineness.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of cocoa pods following treatment of immersing the cocoa pods into different alkaline solution at different length of immersion time. The experiment was carried out in a 5 x 3  factorial  arrangement  according to completely randomized design. The replication for each treatment combination was three giving the total number of experimental units was 45.  The first factor was different alkaline solutions, namely P1: water, P2: rice husk ash solution 10%, P3: coconut shell ash solution 10%, P4: cocoa pod ash solution 10% and P5: NaOH 6%. The second factor was immersion time, i.e. T1: immersion time for 8  hours, T2: immersion time for 16 hours, and T3: immersion for 24 hours. Analysis of variance indicated that alkaline solution, immersion time, and interaction between alkaline solution and immersion time affected (P<0.05) IVDMD of cocoa pods. In conclusion, the IVDMD decreased as the length of immersion time increased. Moreover, the best alkaline solution giving similar result to that NaOH 6% solution was alkaline solution made from cocoa pods ash.

Abstract

This research aim was to evaluate performance of South Sulawesi Province in the implementation of export and import of livestock commodities using such indicators asthe value of export and import, the share value of export, trade balance and ratio. The study was conducted in the Department of Industry and Trade, the Center Statistics Agency, and the Customs and Excise Duty of Makassarusing a combinaton of interview method and literature review.Research results showed that export import performance has improved as indicated by an increase export volume andvalue of livestock commodities, a decrease import volume and value of livestock commodities.The positive trade balance was an indicator of trade domination of livestock commodities, and fluctuated ratio of trading with a tendency to increase. One aspectthat did not show an improvement compared to other non-oil export value of South Sulawesi was export share of livestock commodities.

Abstract

The purpose of this experiment was to examine the effects of mulberry leave meal to substitute concentrate in rice straw based ration on blood profiles of Ongole crossbreed cattle. This experiment was carried out according to completely randomized design consisted of 3 treatments and 4 replications. The treatments were P1 (50% rice straw + 50% concentrate), P2 (50% rice straw + 25% concentrate + 25% mulberry leave meal), and P3 (50% rice straw + 50% mulberry leave meal). Parameters measured were blood profiles, i.e. blood glucose, blood cholesterol and blood HDL. The results showed that substitution of concentrate with mulberry leave meal significantly reduced (P<0.05) blood glucose and increased blood cholesterol and HDL. It is concluded that mulberry leave meal can be used to substitute concentrate and give a positive effect on glucose, cholesterol,and HDL contents of blood.

Abstract

An experiment was conducted at Kyushu University Experimental Field Japan, to evaluate the effect of nitrogen fertilization and cutting age on dry mater yield, reserve carbohydrate content and nitrogen utilization in alang-alang, bahia grass and guinea grass. The grasses species were fertilized with  0. 7 and 1.5 g N/pot and cut  at 50 and 70 days  after nitrogen fertilization. Results of the experiment showed that as nitrogen rates increased, dry matter yield, foliage (stubble + underground parts) ratio, nitrogen concentration and nitrogen uptake of the three species increased. Alang-alang allocated a greater proportion of dry matter to stubble and underground plant parts than to foliage compared to those of bahia grass and guinea grass. Nitrogen fertilization had no consistent effect on reserve carbohydrate content, apparent nitrogen recovery and nitrogen use efficiency. Cutting at 70 days increased dry matter yield and nitrogen uptake but reduced nitrogen concentration of the three grass species. As plant grew older, foliage (stubble + underground parts) ratio decreased in alang-alang but in bahia grass and guinea grass it increased. Alang-alang was less responsive to applied nitrogen in term of nitrogen uptake compared with those of bahia grass and guinea grass, however as the plants grew older, guinea grass showed the highest nitrogen use efficiency compared with those of alang-alang and bahia grass.

Abstract

A research was conducted to investigate the influence of fermentation dose of Saccharomyces cereviceae and sucrose addition on maintaining the physical properties of egg white flour. One hundred and thirty five fresh hen eggs were used in the research which were randomly arranged in a factorial experiment of 3 x 3 according to completely randomized design with 3 replications for each treatment combination.  The first factor was the level of Saccharomyces cereviceae, i.e. 0%, 0,2% and 0,4% w/w, the second factor was the level of sucrose addition, i.e. 0%, 2 % and 4% w/w. The parameters measured were physical properties (rendemen, water content, pH, reduction sugar and color score). Data analysis indicated that increased level of Saccharomyces cereviceae decreased water content, pH, rendemen, reduction sugar, and color score. Sucrose addition improved yield, sugar reduction, color score, but decreased pH of white egg fluor. Physical chracteristics of egg white flour was similar to those of fresh egg white at all of combination of level Saccharomyces cereviceae and sucrose, but low of reduction sugar content and the best color score was obtained at treatment combination of both high level of Saccharomyces cereviceae and low level of sucrose addition.
