Abstract

Amoniasi-Fermentation (amofer) technology should be conducted in order to improve the low quality of by product produced from palm oil plantations and mills (palm oil waste) which is used for constituent of feed ingredients in complete feed (CF). This technology also reforms the feed material into edible form. Before broad application, it must be ensured that the feed does not have toxic effects on livestock. This research was peformed to evaluate the effects of amofer palm oil waste-based CF on blood profile and liver function on local sheep. The research was conducted at the Laboratory of Nutrition and Feed Science Diponegoro University Semarang, using 16 local male sheep aged 9 months, weight at 14.82+0.82 kg (CV=5.52%), divided into four groups and put into individual cages. They are given CF containing crude protein (CP) 10.63% (T1), 12.27% (T2), 13.70% (T3) and 15.90% (T4), with Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN) range 61.83?64.21%. Blood samples were taken after the sheep consuming the CF for 37 days. Experimental design used was CRD with 4 replications. Observed variables were the levels of hemoglobin, hematocrit and blood glucose. Data were analyzed using ANOVA of CRD. The average value of blood glucose levels for T1= 80.68 mg/dl, T2=79.08 mg/dl, T3=81.18 mg/dl and T4=73.70 mg/dl. The average value of hemoglobin levels for T1=10.80 g/dl, T2=10.30 g/dl, T3=11.23 g/dl and T4=10.25 g/dl. The average value of hematocrit levels for T1=31.00%, T2=31.00%, T3=33.75% and T4=30%. There was no significant difference among four treatments (p>0.05). The administration CF did not cause hematological disorders which showed by the blood profiles were in normal range, so that suggested the CF was appropriate and safe for local sheep.

Abstract

One of the reasons for the derease of extension performance in fulfilling farmer needs is the decrease of dairy farmer participation in extension program.  The objective of this study was to identify the level of dairy farmer participation in extension program in Enrekang Regency. The method used was descriptive analysis by comparing participation level of dairy farmer in central area with that in non-central area in terms of planning, implementing and applying the extension program. There were 103 respondents, 57 respondents in central area (55.13%) and 46 respondents (44.87%) in non-central area, respectively were involved in this study. The data were analysed using t student test with independent group.  The result showed that the level of dairy farmer participation in extension planning was moderate in the central area which was lower than that in the non central area. Moreover, dairy farmer participation in the implementation and utilization of extension programs were similar for both groups.  It can be concluded that the level of dairy farmer participation in the extension programs in Enrekang Regency was high.

Abstract

Broiler farm is one type of business that attracts many farmers in South Sulawesi and one of the driving forces is the presence of nucleus plasma business partnership pattern.  Increasing number of companies involved in partnership causing tougher competition among nucleus firms to get the farmer partners. Those who are able to  provide the best quality of service will get a lot of  farmer  partners and will be  able to maintain continuity  of implementation partnerships. This research aim was to analyze attributes of service quality dimension (reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy, tangible) that can give satisfaction to the broiler farmers on the implementation the partnership. Fifty eight broiler farmers, who have implemented partnership, were selected as the sample based on stratified random sampling methods which were distributed proportionally in the long time of partnership period which was 1-5 years, 6-10 years, and more than 11 year. Then, the respondents from each stratum were randomly chosen. In addition, descriptive analysis and Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) were used to analyze of the data. The results of this study indicated that the level of satisfaction of broiler farmers on implementing the partnership including the classification was quite good. This was reflected by the result of performance analysis between compatibility and interests of farmers which gave a value of 77.04% of the 19 attributes of service quality dimensions of firm nucleus analyzed. There were seven attributes that have high level of interests but the performance was still considered low by the broiler farmer plasma. Therefore, it is suggested to the nucleus firms to improve the attributes and to the plasma broiler farmers to establish their own institutions in order to improve their bargaining position to the firm nucleus.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to ascertain the incidence of reproductive disorders in a dairy herd. A total of 44 Holstein Friesian cows in a dairy herd were enrolled in the present study. Trans-rectal palpation of the uterine was performed to determine the consistency of uterine including contraction, elasticity, tonicity, symmetry of uterine horns, and the presence of any fluid in the uterus followed by the presence of any palpable ovarian structures. Cows that did not become pregnant during clinical examination were examined vaginoscopically. Data obtained in the present study were analyzed descriptively based on percentages and means. T-test was used to analyze the interval from calving to first artificial insemination (AI) between cyclic cows and cows with reproductive disorders. The results of this study showed that incidence of reproductive disorders was very high; 38.6%. Inactive ovaries, cyst, and endometritis were the most reproductive disorders suffering the dairy cows. These reproductive disorders subsequently reduced reproductive performance by prolonged interval from calving to first AI as well as interval from calving to pregnancy. Lower BCS of the cows were invented as the most prominent causes of this issue.

Abstract

Seasonal change of bahiagrass tiller under different nitrogen fertilizer rate and cutting height was investigated over a 4-year period. Tiller dynamics were examined using a tagging technique, with treatments of two nitrogen rates [5 g N/m2 /year (LN) and 20 g N/m2/year (HN)] x three cutting heights above ground level [20 mm (LH), 120 mm (MH) and 220 mm (HH)]. Total tiller density in the first one or two years increased in LH treatments, whereas that in MH and HH treatments decreased. Thereafter, the density reached annually constant values, showing seasonal fluctuations consisting of the spring increase and the subsequent decrease. The decrease in cutting height usually increased TAR, and the increase in nitrogen rate often increased TAR in the LH treatments. TDR increased from spring to summer and decreased thereafter. In summer and autumn, HN/LH treatment often showed higher TDR than the other treatments. The balance in LH treatments increased with increasing nitrogen rate. In the other months, the balance was usually close to zero or negative, except for LH treatments in the first year. The half-life of tillers tended to increase with decreasing nitrogen rate and cutting height. Tillers appearing in autumn survived longest, and those appearing in spring shortest. The results show that bahiagrass copes with severe management conditions by increasing its tiller longevity. This is taken as an important mechanism for the high persistence of the grass. In addition, bahiagrass tolerates severe defoliation (LH treatments) also by increasing TAR and thus tiller density

Abstract

Beef meatballs (bakso) need high water-binding or protein extraction properties of fresh meat to improve the emulsification process. The objective of the research was to determine level of combination and addition time of salt (NaCl) and phosphate (STPP) during beef meatballs manufacture. Meat as main ingredients of meatballs obtained from fillet (m.iliopsoas) of Bali cattle.  The research was arranged in a Completely Randomized Design with factorial pattern of 2 x 3, and six replications.  The first factor was the level of combination of salt and phosphate, i.e. 1. NaCl 4% + STPP 0.3%; 2. NaCl 4 % + STPP 0.5%; 3. NaCl 2% + STPP 0.3%; and 4. NaCl 4 % + STPP 0.5%.  The second factor was the addition time of salt and phosphate, i.e. prarigor  and  postrigor.  Parameters of meatballs quality observed were the physical properties (pH and cooking yield) and sensory properties (texture, salt taste, and acceptability).  Combination of NaCl 2% and STTP 0,5% added in prarigor and postrigor tend to improve physical properties of meatballs.
