Abstract

Research has been conducted to determine the effect of mycorrhizal fungi on growth and dry matter production of elephant grass cv. Mott in drought stress conditions. This study was designed factorially based on completely randomized design consisting of 4 levels of mycorrhizal (0 g, 4 g, 8 g and 12 g), four levels of drought stress (watering every day, every 3 days, every 5 days and every 7 days) and 3 replications for each treatment combination. Based on the statistical analysis and discussion, it can be concluded that the growth and dry matter production elephant grass is strongly influenced by the amount of water available for plants. Giving mycorrhizal up to the level of 12 g does not yet give a significant impact on the growth and production of elephant grass cv. Mott.

Abstract

This research aimed to evaluate the profit and rentability of livestock business of Batur sheep at Banjarnegara Regency. The research was carried out using survey method involving 120 Batur sheep breeder as samples. The data used in this study were primary and secondary data.The data were analyzed descriptively. The research results indicated that average of production cost was IDR. 3,574,776.66; the average income was IDR. 6,994,654.17; the profit was IDR. 3,419,877.51; and the average of financial capital was IDR. 8,985,771.94, giving the rentabilityof business to be 38.08%. The average age of Batur sheep breeder was between 31 and 40 years old; the level of education was mostly elementary school, which was as much as 79.17%. The occupancy of the breeder was dominated by farmer, which was as high as 80.83%. The percentage of breeders having average farming experience between 6-10 years was around 54.17%.

Abstract

Listeria monocytogenes is pathogenic bacteria causing disease outbreaks of food origin (food borne bacterial disease) that causes listeriosis in susceptible individuals. Listeria monocytogenes often easily contaminate milk and other livestock products. The aim of the research was to know the physical properties of raw milk and the relation between sanitation and hygiene of milk and Listeria monocytogenes contamination on the dairy farm in Sinjai District South of Sulawesi. In this research, eight samples of fresh milk were taken from local dairy farm. A direct observation was performed on the hygiene and the cage sanitation during milk processing. Then, the physical quality of the milk (specivic gravity, alcohol test, organoleptic examination, acidity). Listeria monocytogenes was detected by culturing on Listeria Selective Agar (LSA) media. The results of study showed that raw milk was contaminated with Listeria sp. In general, the physical quality of raw milk was satisfactory, however the result of alcohol test of milk showed that it was not so good. The presence of bacteria L. monocytogenes in the milk did not cause physical changes either in color, smell, consistency, acidity, or specific gravity. The contamination was closely related to the condition of hygiene and cage sanitation during the milk processing.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the channel marketing types, margin and profit of beef cattle marketing agency from Bone Regency to Makassar. The population of the study covered all beef cattle marketing agencies of Bone Regency to Makassar. Determination of the samples was done by snowball sampling method. Data were collected through direct observation and interviews. Data were then analyzed descriptively. The results showed that there were two forms of beef cattle marketing channel from Bone District to Makassar, the first channel: farmers to traders and then to the inter-area merchant and next to the slaughterhouse businessman, the second channel: farmers to inter-regional traders and next businessmen to the slaughterhouse. The marketing agency that received the largest margin was the cattle traders on the second channel, followed by the inter area cattle traders in the first channel, and the lowest was for the collector. However, the marketing agency that got the most benefit was the collector traders, followed by the inter area traders of the second channel, and the lowest was for inter area traders of the channel I. The longer the beef cattle marketing channel, the greater the margin and profits. The margin and Profit of marketing channel I (two levels) were much greater than those of marketing channel II (one level).

Abstract

Kacang Goat is one of Indonesian native livestock having high potency of production that have to be preserved, especially in South Sulawesi. The purpose of this study was to evaluate carcass percentage of commercial cuts as well as muscle distribution of male kacang goat under intensive fattening system with different initial body weight. Twenty one male of kacang goats were randomly divided into three groups according to their initial body weight. The experiment was carried out according to completely randomized design consisted of three treatments (age group) and seven replications for each treatment. The animals were reared under intensive fattening system for three months. At the initial period of the experiment, each goat was weighed to obtained the initial body weight. At the end of the experimental period, each animal was weighed to obtain the slaughtered weight of each animal. Following the slaughter, carcass processing was performed for each animal. The carcass and carcass cuts then were weighed. The results of study showed that animals having a heavier initial body weight grew faster, had higher carcass percentage, and had lower non carcass percentage.The growth of male kacang goat muscle was evenly distributed.

Abstract

Antioxidant and antihypertensive (ACE-Inhibitors) are commonly known as bioactive molecules in foodstuff. Both molecules can be obtained naturally or through processing and preservation of egg white of poultry eggs. One way of preserving the egg white with drying method is by pan drying method. The objective of this study was to determine an appropriate temperature and drying time to produce high yield of antioxidant and antihypertensive activity. The materials used for this study were 900 eggs which were obtained from the same farm. That amount was calculated based on the number of experimental units required to run the experiment with the total number of treatment (3 x 3) with 4 replications for each treatment combination giving 25 chicken eggs for each treatment. The experiment was carried out using a 3x3 factorial arrangement according to completely randomized design. The first factor was drying temperature, i.e. 45oC, 50oC, and 55oC and the second factor was drying time, i.e. 30h, 39h, and 48h. The results showed that high antioxidant activity was found on egg white which was dried at temperature of 45oC for 39 hours which reached 26.85%. However, antihypertensive activity was optimum at 50oC and drying for 48 hours, which was up to 75.06%. Drying the egg white using appropriate temperature and time may improve the antioxidant and antihypertensive activities.

Abstract

Urea Mineral Molases Liquid (UMML) dan biomassa murbei dapat menjadi prekursor biofermentasi dalam sistem rumen. UMML dapat menyediakan nitrogen lepas lambat, mineral larut air dan readily available carbohydrate (RAC), sedangkan biomassa murbei dapat menyediakan RAC, asam amino bercabang, mineral dan vitamin.  Formula UMML adalah larutan yang tercampur dari bahan-bahan yang terdiri atas Urea-kalsium (Ca(urea)4Cl2), molases dan larutan fosfat (fosfat dilarutkan dengan asam organik). Diperlukan jumlah UMML yang tepat dalam ransum sehingga ransum menjadi efisien. Penelitian ini menguji tingkat penggunaan UMML yang efektif mendukung biofermentasi bahan pakan campuran jerami padi dan biomassa daun murbei dalam sistem rumen. Ransum uji terdiri atas jerami padi dan biomassa murbei dengan perbandingan 70:30, yang diaplikasikan tiga perlakuan yakni tanpa penambahan UMML serta penambahan UMML sebanyak 10% dan 20% (v/w). Pengujian dilakukan pada  rumen in vitro. Peubah yang diamati adalah nilai pH, konsentrasi amonia dan VFA,  produksi gas dan tingkat degradasi bahan kering ransum.  Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penambahan UMML yang terbaik pada fermentasi campuran jerami padi dan biomassa murbei adalah sebesar 10%.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the use of L. plantarum starter on a complete ration silage made from water hyacinth on consumption of nitrogen free extract (NFE), partial volatile fatty acids (VFA) production, methane production, and blood glucose concentration of sheep. This study used fifteen rams (12 months old with an average body weight of 19 ± 3.98 kg). Sheep were randomly divided into 3 groups of treatment rations, namely the group given: concentrate ration and elephant grass (T0), complete ration silage provided without the addition of L. plantarum starter (T1), and complete ration silage provided with the addition of L. plantarum starter (T2). Ration was formulated isocaloric and isoprotein (CP 13%, TDN 65%). The results showed that the consumption of NFE, the concentration of propionic acid, butyric acid and blood glucose before and post feeding was not significantly different, whereas the concentration of acetic acid, the ratio of C2:C3 and methane production was significantly different (P<0,05) among treatments. The concentration of acetic acid of treatment T0, T1 and T2 was 36.52, 28.86, and 32.43 mM, respectively. Methane concentration was 19.95, 16.08, 17,55 mM, respectively for T0, T1, T2 and glucose concentration was 45.50, 70.30, and 53.24 mg/dl, for treatment T0, T1, T2, respectively. In conclusion, provision of silage ration complete which was provided with or and without L. plantarum starter was much better compared to control ration, (concentrates with elephant grass).
