Abstract

Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular parasite whose definite host is cat or felidae and intermediate host is human orother mammals. It causes congenital and acquisita toxoplasmosis. Infection with this apicomplexan parasite results inits dissemination throughout its host via the tachyzoite life stage. After dissemination, these tachyzoites differentiateinto bradyzoites within cyst and remain latent. These bradyzoites can transform back into tachyzoites and inimmunosupressed individuals this often results in symptomatic disease. Both tachyzoites and bradyzoites develop intissue culture and this crucial differentiation event can be studied. Interferon gamma (IFN ) is the main mediator intachyzoite-bradyzoite differentiation.

Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus) remains to be the most important cause of post operative wound infection. Nursescould become reservoirs to transmit S.aureus through contaminated hands transiently, or through colonized nose.Strain polymorphism could be determined by Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP), using coa gene andrestriction endonuclease enzyme Alu1. There were 30 isolates of S.aureus?s infection, and 20 isolates taken from handsand nose of the nurses in charge. From 50 isolate positive S.aureus, PCR results showed single and multiple bandswithin 300 to 900 base pairs (bp) in length, and multiple bands within 200 to 600 bp. Five out of 30 patients (17%)showed no PCR-RFLP similarity with any of the nurses. Ten out of 15 nurses which hands were positive for S.aureus, has PCR-RFLP similarity with some patients. There was only 1 out of 5 nurses which nose was positive for S.aureus, showed PCR-RFLP similarity with some patients. Statistically, the proportion of the similar PCR-RFLP between thosesamples in this study is 0.12 (12%). Conclusion: Nurses had 12 % PCR-RFLP similarity for S.aureus with post operativewound infection.

Abstract

The cause of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) remains unknown. Environmental factors as well as genetic factors have beenlinked to pathogenesis of RA, in particular Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) infection. Since clinical onset of RA is long timeafter primary viral exposure, it is still difficult to demonstrate the direct link of EBV infection with RA pathogenesis. However, the high levels of antibodies against several EBV proteins detected in RA patient sera, the molecular mimicryof EBV proteins with RA susceptible alleles, cross reactive of several antibodies against EBV with proteins in RAsynovium, the higher load of EBV in peripheral blood and synovial tissue of RA patients compared to non-RA patientsand EBV capability to induce ACPA production might show a clear link of EBV infection with RA pathogenesis.

Abstract

Ascaris lumbricoides ( A.lumbricoides ) and Trichuris trichiura ( T.trichiura ) are Soil Transmitted Helminth. Infectiondue to these worms still become a public health problem in Indonesia especially in students at elementary schools. The purpose of this research is to know the prevalence of students with positive A.lumbricoides and T.trichiura egg intheir nail?s dirt and the risk factors that affected it. Data was collected by questionaire and by examining the nail?s dirtusing Ismid?s Modification Method to all of class I,II,III students with inclusion criteria (177 students ). The prevalenceof students with positive A. lumbricoides dan T. trichiura eggs in nail dirt was 44.06% and 2.82%. The prevalence ofA.lumbricoides and T.trichiura are higher at boys (58.16%), which are influenced by the parent?s education and socioeconomical condition. The most cases was found in students with bad habit of family?s toilet, hand washing aftertoilet, often play in ground, and the habit of nail-cutting.

Abstract

Neurological deficits on stroke patients can caused immobility. Decubitus ulcer is one of immobilty?s complication. Two hours repositioning is one of medical rehabilitation programs in decubitus prevention. The aim of this study is todescribe effectiveness of two hours repositioning to prevent decubitus ulcer, especially on post-stroke patients. Thisstudy was a preventive intervention study with cross-sectional approach. Sample consists of 32 patients. Group Iconsists of 16 patients with repositioning intervention. On the otherhand, group II consists of 16 patients withoutrepositioning intervention. Then, this two groups were compared and were looked for the effectiveness. from thisstudy, we knew that prevalence of decubitus ulcer on post-stroke patients are 19.4% with the effectiveness of two hoursrepositioning is 87.5%. There was significant difference between these two groups to prevent decubitus. it occurred ongeriatric patients with percentage of 75%. Its Proportion for female: male are 2:1. It is commonly occurred on firstweek hospitalization, especially grade 2 (33.3%). It is mostly located on sacrum (100%).

Abstract

Many researches showing the evidence of a reverse relation between helminthiasis and allergic diseases in tropicaldeveloping countries, supported by hygiene hypothesis. There is relationship between the inflammation caused byallergic and helminthiasis. Both, allergic and helminthiasis, show the increase of IgE level, eosinophilia, mastocytosis, and release of IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13 cytokines by Th2. Several mechanisms explaining the decrease of allergicmanifestation in people with helminthiasis are polyclonal IgE blocking, suppression of anti-inflammatory cytokines(IL-10 and TGF-â), and IgG4 blocking antibody.

Abstract

Prevalence rates of myopia in many Asian urban countries reaching epidemic proportion. It has long been observedthat myopic children have higher IQ, and association between myopia and higher level of near work. This study aimsto quantify the association myopia with school achievement and near work in Riau University medical students. Theprevalence rate of myopia in Riau University medical students was 31.4 % (76 students). Myopia students as casesgroup compare to emmetropic students as control group. This study showed that high significant association myopiawith near work profile and no significant association myopia with school achievement. Myopia students more likely tohave risk near work profile than emmetropic students (x2 test P < 0.001) with odds ratio 6.12. Myopia students morelikely to have high GPA than emmetropic students (OR 1.34) but interaction between myopia and school achievementwere not significant (x2 test p> 0.05).

Abstract

Celery (Apium graveolens L.) has been known as traditional medicine. Apigenin is one of active component in Celeryleaf that has fungicidal activity, so celery leaf?s extortion suspected has fungicidal activity to Candida albicans. Apigenincan solved in water. The aim of this research was to know antifungal activity of celery leaf?s extortion againsts Candidaalbicans in vitro. This is a laboratory experimental research by using completely randomized design and disc diffusion method. Celeryleaf?s extortion was divided into 3 concentrations, there were 25%, 50% and 100%. Ketoconazole 2% was used aspositive control and aquadest as negative control. The result of this research was based on analysis of variance, therewas significant difference between minimal 2 treatment (p=0.000) and confirmed with Post Hoc test, there were significantdifference in all treatments. As the conclusion, celery leaf?s extortion had antifungal activity againsts Candida albicansin vitro with the best concentration 50% but smaller than ketoconazole 2%.
