Abstract

Bangladesh is a developing country and has a lot of factories for different products for local use and also export to abroad. Garments industries are one of the top most items of exported items. A huge number of populations are working in garments industries. But these factories are not well designed in sense of the thermal environment. Workers experiences sickness related to indoor environment. The productions of these factories are affected due to employees? health condition. The research is done in two different methods. One is empirical data collection using thermal data loggers and the other is questionnaire survey on the spots for three factory buildings. The field study was conducted in four different months of the same year during winter and summer period. Expected findings of this research are that the indoor environment is not comfortable for works at day time during summer season. This research will help the factory workers in providing a comfortable thermal environment and also help the employers or factory owners to increase their production margin.

Abstract

Architectural forms are created by human minds. Because of this they are tied tightly to the perceptual experience and concept of designer. Designers are creating images and models for thought and communication, through which the intentions of a design idea may be captured and transmitted, so that the concepts can be understood, and perceived as reality. In a creative design process, a wide range of media are applied. It plays an important role, not only in conveying architectural messages and but also in operating as a catalyst to explore design ideas. This paper discusses the role of design media on the reception and conception of the architectural message. Abstract in Bahasa Indonesia : Bentuk arsitektur diciptakan oleh pikiran manusia.

Abstract

The government of South Kalimantan has planned to reconstruct Banjarese palace based on the evidence of its glory in the past. This plan has firstly been conducted through the search of Banjarese kingdom location. This research itself is aimed to obtain the architecture representation of Banjarese palace, which is part of the search of Banjarese kingdom location. Based on literature study, it is concluded that the architecture representation of Banjarese palace is identical with that of one of Banjarese traditional houses, which is high ridge house. The field study shows that there are only 16 high ridge houses left in South Kalimantan. Furthermore, based on the typology analysis, Banjarese palace in representation of high ridge house has at least 5 (five) rooms, which are: pelataran (veranda), panampik (guest room), paledangan (living room), anjung (west and east wing), and padapuran (kitchen). Besides the rooms, the palace also has distinctive features, such as the cacak burung-shaped floor plan, anjung, and the shape of the roof (sindang langit, bubungan, the anjung roof, and hambin awan).

Abstract

Indonesian old cities as the sites of government, trading, and ports have been established before the arrival of the Europeans. The form and pattern of settlements which served as the centres of the hinterlands were influenced by Indian or Hindu and afterwards by Chinese and European cultures. Makassar has been the dominant trading centre in Nusantara Archipelago. Its strategic location on South West peninsula of the sprawling island of Sulawesi gave it excellent access to the busy sea lanes of Java Sea, the Makassar straits, the Celebes and Banda seas and hence to many local trading networks as well as to the crucial long distance trade with India, China, and ultimately with Europe. The history of the city of Makassar began with the fort which was turned into the site of government, military and trade after the destruction of the Somba Opu fort. Despite of its similarities, there were principal differences with cities in Java which were also established in the same period.

Abstract

In the increase of environmental noise, building elements enriched with acoustical properties are significant to serve amenities and healtiness among inhabitants. However, this type of elements which usually consist of high quality materials is much too expensive for most people. The use of paddy straw as the main material to construct acoustical panels is considered in a very early stage of material research. Paddy straw has chareacteristics which is close to acoustical requirements of panels, besides abundance of availability. These benefits will significantly lowered cost production without significantly reduce the quality. Further research to seek the next step of application of paddy straw as acoustic panels is in conduct.

Abstract

One of expediences in trying to understand the image of urban environment can be conducted by the way of knowing the cognition map of human as the observer. Cognition maps discuss about the way the observer get, organize, store, and recall the information about location, distance and the structure of physical environment (urban). Cognition maps had a basic concept called imageability or the ability of inviting impression. Imageability has a very close correlation with legibility, or the ease of having understanding/image and can be organized into one coherent pattern. In order one city can easily understood with the image, so the city must have character because the character of a city is needed for giving understanding about the identify of city, in accordance with the exisiting potensial. In this case, the character is the soul, the realization of character, both physically and non-physically, giving some image and identity of city.

Abstract

The early shapes of ancient mosques in Java during the 15th - 16th centuries are very interesting. Many theories suggest that those shapes originated from the culture of Hinduist-Javanese or Javanese in general. Very few articles are there studying the important role of Chinese carpentry in the development of those mosques of Java, especially those in the northern coast of Java. To name a few, they are the Demak mosque (1474), the Kudus mosque (1537), and the Mantingan mosque (1559) near by Jepara. They physically show the traces of Chinese carpentry and stone masonry. This article is an early study which attempts to trace the existence of Chinese carpentry in those ancient mosques of Java. Abstract in Bahasa Indonesia : Bentuk awal mesjid kuno di Jawa (abad 15-16), sangat menarik.

Abstract

The idea of 'non-physical' cultural heritage conservation and preservation has been around since the early 1980s, however such an idea was never specifically explored, particularly in regard of the Bali's cultural heritage conservation and preservation. Based on pluralistic approach (Appleyard, 1976; Lynch, 1960; Rapoport, 1969, 1977), a research was conducted on 1998-1999 to gather some findings for the purpose of utilizing urban design as a means to produce Balinese towns conducive to cultural identity. This paper is developed from this research and it attempts to propose an approach of the conservation of the traditional Balinese cultural landscape in the urban areas. The approach relies on the understanding that a Balinese traditional townscape is deemed as cultural heritage, and consequently it develops within the urban design framework.

Abstract

The poor quality of the Nigerian urban environment has been attributed partly to the inadequate%2C misuse and mis- management of the urban open spaces. This%2C according to various researchers%2C has exerted a major strain on the physical outlook of the environment and a negative effect on the welfare and productivity of the residents. This has called for the need to identify and analyze the open spaces in the urban environment and assess the implications of their landscape planning on the status of the city and the development of a healthy and sustainable environment. This study therefore discusses the concept of sustainability%2C particularly within the built environment. It looks into the principles and indicators for sustainability of the environment and the resulting problems. Furthermore%2C a case study of Akure urban core was carried out to assess the uses and landscape status of the open spaces. The results when statistically analysed showed the inadequacies in the provision and management of the open spaces in the study area. It therefore recommends attainable policies for the effective sustainability of the environment. Abstract in Bahasa Indonesia : urban environment%2C sustainability%2C landscaping.

Abstract

Yusuf Bilyarta Mangunwijaya is not only recognized as a pastor but also as a cultural observer, writer and architect. The architectural works he produced even touch the marginal people. The work does not only result in the physical building but also the total work of human development, "use" and "image". World Architecture never escapes from Vitruvius trilogy saying : Firmitas, Utilitas and Venustas. In his amazing writing, Mangunwijaya offered a distillation of trilogy (three categories) into two categories, 'use' and 'image'. This writing is going to impart how the distillation of three categories becomes a 'two-categories. Abstract in Bahasa Indonesia : Yusuf Bilyarta Mangunwijaya tidak saja dikenal sebagai seorang Pastor, tetapi dia juga seorang budayawan, sastrawan, bahkan arsitek.
