Abstract

Jasmine flower (Jasminum sambac) contains essential oil compounds. Jasmine flower essential oil is a high-quality essential oil. Essential oils are volatile oils that have aroma similar to the original plant. Jasmine flower essential oil is sought due to its calming and anti-depression nature. In this study, the effect of extraction temperature, extraction time and solvent to jasmine flower ratio on jasmine oil was studied. The extraction was carried out at 30oC, 35oC, and 40oC for 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours, and 5 hours by using n-hexane. The ratio of jasmine flower to n-hexanes were 1:3; 1:4; and 1:5 (w/v). Resulting jasmine oil was analyzed by GC-MS, and its quality was assessed according to SNI 06-2385-2006 which include colour test, refractive index analysis, acid number analysis, and ester number analysis. This experiment showed that increasing of extraction time, extraction temperature, and volume of solvent lead to increase of absolute yield of jasmine essential oil. The highest jasmine oil yield obtained at 11.69 %. The jasmine oil contained was 47.14 % benzyl acetate and had yellow color. Its refractive index, acid number, and ester number were 1.478, 20.92 mg KOH/gram jasmine essential oil, and 150.27 mg KOH/gram jasmine essential oil respectively.

Abstract

Anaerobic digestion is one of solution to environmental problems and energy sources for current energy needs. In anaerobic digestion, organic material is degraded by bacteria, which is carried out without oxygen, and converts it to a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide. POME can be degraded anaerobically in anaerobic digester to produce biogas. This study aims to increase the conversion of biogas produced using a 2 liter Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) type digester in the methanogenesis process by recycling the effluent produced through the ultrafiltration membrane in a transition condition (45oC). The process is carried out by varying the recycle ratio, which is 0%, 15% and 25% on HRT 6 days with a condition of pH 7 ± 0.2. The highest average biogas production was achieved at the 25% recycle ratio of 33.15 x 10-5 L / mg VS. day, with the composition of methane, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide each of 79%; 19%; and 0.006%, with degradation of VS and COD of 39.58% and 66.33% respectively. For the composition of the highest CH4 content obtained at a variation of the 15% recycle ratio which is equal to 85% while for the composition of carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide each is 14%; and 0.0076%.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to determine the effects of filler loading and pressure of hot press on tensile strength of zinc oxide (ZnO) filled polyester composites. The Composites were prepared by using polyester as the matrix, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKPO) as the catalyst. The composites were filled by the zinc oxide at 0%; 1%; 3%; 5%; and 7% were molded by hot press with pressure variation of 50 psi, 75 psi, 100 psi, 125 psi and 150 psi. Composites have been molded, then tested for the characteristics Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and tests of tensile strength. The best result of tensile strength, impact and flexural were found on the addition of 3% ZnO at a pressure of 150 psi with a tensile strength of 55,12 MPa. SEM characterization showed a rough surface on the addition of 3% ZnO at a pressure of 150 psi because had a good wetting between matrix and filler ZnO.

Abstract

Glycerol as a byproduct of biodiesel production was approximately formed 10-20% of the biodiesel weight. Impurities which contained in the glycerol such as inorganic salts, catalysts, water and matter organic non glycerol (MONG) which contained free fatty acids, fatty acids as residual of methyl ester, glycerides, and alcohols (generally methanol or ethanol) had a significant effect on glycerol concentration. We needed some treatment, especially to eliminate the impuritis. This study aims to purify glycerol by acidfication using phosphate and adsorption with chicken egg shell waste. This research was begun with the pretreatment of glycerol using phosphoric acid with the variable of test weight ratio (w/w) acid added 1: 0.2; 1: 0.4; 1: 0.6; 1: 0.8 and 1: 1 , continued with adsorption using thermally activated chicken egg shell waste with the variable weight percent adsorbent (%w/w) 3%, 6%, 9%, 12% and 15% with reaction conditions, stirring speed 250 rpm and adsorption time 120 minutes. The purest result was obtained at weight ratio (w/w) acidification of 1: 0.6, weight percent adsorbent (% w/w) 15% with glycerol content of 67.22%, density 1.171 g / cm3, moisture content 2.796%, ash content 13.852% and MONG content 16.130%.

Abstract

Pectin can be utilized in various industries of making jelly, jam, gelling, thickener, stabilizer and emulsifier. In this study the extraction of pectin from orange peel (Citrus sinensis) using ultrasonic waves and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) was conducted to determine the effect of variation in settling time and concentration of the alcohol as the pectin filtrate precipitating material on the characteristics of the pectin produced. The study was carried out with 30 minutes extraction time, extraction temperature of 70 oC using H2SO4. Variations carried out were settling time for 14 hours, 16 hours, 18 hours and 20 hours, and concentration of the alcohol ; 65%, 75%, 85% and 95%. Characteristics of pectin produced with successive characteristics: yield ranged from 16.44%-22.44%; moisture content from 4.0-9.45%; ash content of 2.34%-5.54%; equivalent weight of 510.20-865.07 mg; methoxyl content of 7.35%-10.79%; and galacturonic content of 63.71%-95.74%. The 18-hour settling time with 95% ethanol produced the most yield with the best pectin characteristics that met IPPA (International Pectin Producers Association) standards.

Abstract

Soap is a cleanser made by chemical reactions between sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide with fatty acids from vegetable oils or animal fats. Soaps can be made by several methods, namely saponification and neutralization methods, in this study carried out by saponification method. In the saponification method there are several problems namely operating conditions which include reaction temperature, stirring speed and stirring time. Therefore, need to do research to determine the best conditions of saponification reaction, namely reaction speed, operating temperature and reaction time using an impeller type multiple pitch blade turbine with research variables reaction temperature 60 oC, 70 oC, and 80 oC, stirring speed 300 rpm,400 rpm and 500 rpm and reaction time of 45minutes, 60 minutes, and 75 minutes. Saponification reaction is carried out by heating coconut oil and inserting 30% NaOH slowly and then stirring with a multiple pitch blade stirrer. The product will be analyzed by testing alkaline levels, moisture content and pH of the soap. The best operating conditions obtained from this study were at a temperature of 70 oC, reaction time of 60 minutes, stirring speed of 400 rpm with a pH value of 9.4 and an alkaline level of 0.073 and a moisture content of 9.8.

Abstract

The process of composting empty fruit bunches and Azolla microphylla by asistance active organic liquid fertilizer was an alternative in the utilization of solid waste produced from the palm oil mill. This research was to produce good quality compost from a mixture of 60%:40% weight empty fruit bunches and azolla microphylla with asistance active organic liquid fertilizer. The composting process is done by entering empty fruit bunches and Azolla microphylla on the composter and added active organic liquid fertilizer to achieve the moisture content  value of 55%-65%. During composting, the moisture content was kept on the optimum condition by adding the active organic liquid fertilizer. The parameters analyzed were temperature, moisture content, pH, water holding capacity, electrical conductivity, and C-N. The result showed that compost can be produced within ± 30 days with characteristic of pH 8.8; Moisture Content 59,92%, Water Holding Capacity 86%,  C 27.24%,  N 1.53 % and C/N 17.80%

Abstract

Jasmine flower is one of the high value commodities. One of the applications of  jasmine flower  is jasmine essential oil. Jasmine essential oil is often used to produce high quality parfume. Extraction is one of the methods for extracting jasmine essential oil, usually by the help of solvent. In this study, the effect of extraction time, extraction temperature, and solvent to jasmine flower ratio on jasmine oil extraction was studied. The extraction was carried out at 30oC, 35oC, and 40oC for 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours, and 5 hours by using isopropyl ether. The ratio of jasmine flower to isopropyl ether were 1:3; 1:4; and 1:5 (m/v). The resulting jasmine oil was analyzed by GC-MS and its quality was assessed according to SNI 06-2385-2006 which include colour test, refractive index analysis, acid number analysis, and ester number analysis. This experiment showed that increasing of extraction time, extraction temperature, and volume of solvent lead to increase of absolute yield of jasmine essential oil. The highest jasmine oil yield was obtained at 10.63 %. The jasmine oil contained 45.34% benzyl acetate and had yellow color. Its refractive index, acid number, and ester number were 1.485, 26.228 mg KOH/gram jasmine essential oil, and 159.885 mg KOH/gram jasmine essential oil.
