Abstract

The pathophysiological concept of hypertension is still in debate since many factors are involved in the development of the disease. Stress plays a role in the pathophysiology of hypertension through its effect on adrenaline secretion and sympathetic tone.In the development of adrenoceptor concept some studies showed that presynaptic P.adrenoceptors are of (32 subtype. Since the evidence for noradrenaline activating presynaptic 13-adrenoceptors is mostly negative, the question arises whether presynaptic 13-adrenoceptors have a physiological activator. Many studies showed that adrenaline is suggested to be the putative activator through its role as cotransmitter.Since there was correlation between stress; and the increase in the concentration of plasma adrenaline and blood pressure, it is suggested that presynaptic fl-adrenoceptor has an important role in the development of hypertension.Key Words: adrenaline — cotransrnitter — hypertension — presynaptic B— adrenoceptors — sympathetic transmission

Abstract

Four cases of 1- to 12-year old children with strabismus were reported. In all cases no abnormality of both the motoric and the refractive media of the eye were found. On the other hand, funduscopic examination revealed macular and retinal lesions in the form of rosette pigmentation and pseudocoloboma which were suggestive of the existence of congenital toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis. This suggestion was confirmed to be true with serologic examination for Taxopla, sma. It was thought that the squintness was secondary to the congenital toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis and possible mechanism was discussed.Key Words: toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis — disturbance of binocular vision — strabismus — rosette pigmentation — latex agglutination

Abstract

Mosquito incense coil had been widely use among the households of Indonesian community as an effort to prevent mosquito bites. Nevertheless, its definite influence to the mosquitos biology is still not yet known. This study was conducted to ensure the influence of mosquito incense coil smoke to the longevity, egg production capability, egg hetching capacity and instar emerging capacity of Aedes aegypli mosquito in Yogyakarta.Aedes aegypli mosquitos were collected either from urban or rural area, reared in the laboratory and prepared for laboratory testing. Incense burning was done in a closed-testing room, in six different periods from 5 minutes to 180 minutes. Some biological aspects such as longevity, egg production, egg hetching and instar emerging were observed. It can be concluded that mosquitos incense smoke has either chase out effect or killing effect to Ae. aegypti mosquitos. It is also clear that with the incense burner period of 30 minutes will prolong the longevity, reduce egg production capability, reduce egg hetching capacity and reduce instar emerging capacity. On the incense burning period of 120 minutes, 81.7% of Ae. aegypti tested were killed, and furthermore, in the incense burning period of 180 minutes, all Ae. aegypti tested were killed.Key Words: egg production capability -- egg hetching capacity — instar emerging capacity chase out effect — mosquito incence coil

Abstract

This paper presented the main recommendations for the definition and classification.of diabetes mellitus and of impaired glucose intolerance in non-pregnant adults.Diabetes mellitus is not a disease in the classical sense but is more probably a syndrome best characterized as a state of chronic hyperglycemia of various etiology. It may present with acute symptoms that include polyuria, polydipsia and unexplained weight loss and these can progress to life threatening ketoacidosis or hyperosmolar coma. Chronic hyperglycemia may be asymptomatic, but it has long been recognized as a predisposing factor for specific microvascular complications, namely neuropathy, retinopathy and nephropachy.Blood glucose concentration is the most common, variable used to define diabetes mellitus, but the increased blood glucose is not the sole pathological manifestation, nor has it been proved beyond doubt to be first in the pathological sequence. The limit between physiological and pathological values of blood glucose concentration is still debatable. An area of particular difficulty is the evaluation of situation that are near the physiological limit.New criteria for the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus and other catagories of glucose intolerance have been developed by National Diabetes Data Group (1979) and these have been endorsed by World Health Organization in 1980 and revised in 1985.Key Words: diabetes mellitus — target screening — chronic hyperglycemia — glucose intolerance -- hyperosmolar coma
