Abstract

This articles described various definitions of peace and peace science, and put special emphasis on operational ones which are relevant for our survival. Our main and immediate concern is the threat of a nuclear war which endangers the global ecosystem. Several reasons are brought forth why this problem has not been widely discussed in the Third World. Furthermore, the articles pointed out that old ideas on the biological necessity and unavoidability of war are obsolete and incorrect, and the assumption that nuclear arms race is just a political game to preserve peace is no longer valid. Also, the possibility of human survival after a nucleanholocallst is categorically rejected. Finally, the responsibility of the university in the preservation of peace is proposed. Key Words: peace studies - structural violence - nuclear warfare - human survival - peace-oriented education

Abstract

Vitamin A deficiency canoccur not only from inadequate intake but also because of poor in testinal absorption or inadequate conversion of provitamin A, as occurs in diseases of the liver or malnutrition. It has recently been reported that Zinc, Vitamin E and Vitamin C are necessary to-maintain normal concentrations of vitamin A in the plasma. Hypervitaminosis A may occur as a consequence of the administration of large doses of vitamin A concentrates. Vitamin A toxicity causes increases in levels of lipids, glycogen and citrate in the liver. As important therapeutic for vitamin A deficiency, supplementations of protein, lipid, Zinc, Vitamin E and vitamin C increase the efficacy of vitamin A therapy. Key Words: vitamin A deficiency - malnutrition - xerophthalmia - carotene - hypervitaminosis

Abstract

A survey on anemia has been conducted on 94 school children in Yogyakarta of whom 46 were from rural and 48 from urban private elementary schools. The subjects ranged in age from 6 to 12 years. The frequency of anemia showed significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.01). The result showed that 39.13% of the rural and 6.25% of the urban school children were anemic. More girls were anemic than boys, namely 13.83% of the girls and 8.5% of the boys (p < 0.05). Amongst the causes of anemia in the rural area is thought to be worm infestation and other factors enhancing iron deficiency. It is suggested that iron supplement to adolescent girls is important. Key Words: anemia - hemoglobin - anthropometric measurement - nutritional status - iron deficiency

Abstract

The paper describes the epidemiology and pathology of depression. The history of therapy against depression and in particular the neurotransmitters hypothesis is presented. A clinical trial was carried out in the Out-Patient Department of the Central General Hospital Dr. Sardjito, Yogyakarta. Twenty depressed patients with ages of 15 — 25 years were treated with Nomifensine, during two weeks period, with a daily dose of 50 mg in the morning and 50 mg at noon. Intensity of depression was tested with Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, before treatment, a week after treatment and finally two weeks after. A pairwise retest of differences between two item differences, was chosen for analysis of the means of the initial —, mid —, and terminal depression intensity. There is a significant decrease in intensity of depression between the initial and terminal evaluation. Remarkable side effects were absent in almost all the patients treated. Nomifensine in daily dose of 2 X 50 mg a day is effective in the treatment of depression. In most instances reduction in total score can be expected within 1 - 2 weeks of drug treatment. Finally, a recommendation is offered. Key Words: nomifensine - depression - neurotransmitters - psychiatry - anti-depressive agents

Abstract

Three cases of thymoma were reported. Each was located in the anterior part of the media - stinum. The symptoms were dyspnea, cough, and increased blood pressure which possibly is caused by the pressure on the mediastinal organs by the tumor. In all cases either the macroscopic-or the microscopic examinations were benign. Histologically the tumor showed areas of epithelium cells and lymphocytes separated by connective tissues septum which were seen also in the gross picture. No invasive tumor was found in the surrounding tissues or organs. There was no myasthenia gravis found in all the three cases. Key Words: mediastinal pressures symptom - thymoma - tumor - thymus - lymphoma
