Abstract

Islamic multicultural education in formal education can be implemented since elementary school. The purpose of this article is to describe the application of multicultural education with moderate Islamic values through the learning process in elementary schools to shape the character of nationalism in Indonesia. The qualitative method was used in this study to see the phenomena that occur in the field. The data analysis used was the source and technique triangulation method. There were 8 respondents from three elementary schools, namely Sekolah Dasar Negeri 7 Kota Metro, Sekolah Dasar Negeri 4 Kota Metro, and Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri 1 Kota Metro. The research instruments used were interviews, observations, and documentation, which were then analyzed through inductive thinking. The development of multicultural education and moderate Islamic values in shaping the character of nationalism was done through the integration of moderate Islam by instilling tawassuth, tassamuh, tawazun, and amar ma'ruf nahimunkar attitudes by introducing the surrounding environment as a cultural plurality (contextual approach) and instilling an attitude of tolerance and able to coexist with other people. These three steps were developed by the teachers in structured lesson planning by formulating goals, setting essential material, carrying out the learning process, and carrying out attitude assessments.

Abstract

The development of Islamic-based learning models and pictures media recently has become the focus of research in Indonesia, especially the integration between the values of science and religion. This study aimed to develop pictures of media based on Islamic values in Biology learning for high school students. The research and development procedures proposed by Borg & Gall and ADDIE model proposed by Kurt which had been modified into the ISI-ARE (Investigate, Strategy, Improve, Assessment, Realization, and Estimation) model was used as the research method. The data was collected through investigations and questionnaire validation by four experts (material, media, language, and religion). The investigation questionnaire and a media feasibility response questionnaire were distributed to two experienced biology teachers and 20 tenth-grade students (10 males and 10 females). The results showed that the media, religion, and language experts stated that the developed Islamic-based pictures media was highly feasible to be used with the obtained percentage of 90.30 %, 83.70 %, and 81.50 %. However, the material experts rated the media as feasible (75.00 %) and the teachers and students respectively rated the media as highly feasible with a percentage of 75.40 % and 87.20 %. This study illustrates that the Islamic values-based pictures media can be used as an alternative in biology learning.

Abstract

Argumentation is considered by science teachers as a major component of science education. Middle school students need to be empowered in their argumentation skills to answer challenges to global competition. This study aimed to compare the argumentation skills between male and female students in science through the Argument-Driven Inquiry (ADI) model and guided inquiry model. There were 317 participants (150 male and 167 female) eighth-grade students of several schools in Bandar Lampung. The Pretest-posttest Non-equivalent Control Group Design was used as a part of a quasi-experimental design. The experiment class applied the ADI model and the control class applied the guided inquiry model. The data were collected by argumentation test, questionnaire of implementation learning syntax, and participant?s response. The data were analyzed by ANCOVA test and qualitative techniques. The results indicated that the ADI model led to a significant increased in argumentation skills in the science context. Moreover, there is no difference in the achievement of females and males. When students were encouraged to state claims and support their claims with data, warrants, and backing, it was observed that their argumentative discourse increased in terms of both the structure and the complexity of the argumentation. In light of the findings, it is suggested that the argumentation activities should be developed to promote students' science content knowledge and argumentation skills of both male and female students.
