Abstract

Wood blocks of karri and jarrah  measuring 10 mm (radial) x 25 mm (longitudinal) x  100 mm (tangential) were ovendried for  48 hours at 105°C prior  to treatment.  Acetylation  was carried out in 250 ml- reactor  vessels using a 25  %  (v/v) solution of acetic anhydride in xylene.  Three reaction times, i.e., 8, 16 and 24 hours were used for  each wood type. Treatment results are expressed in terms  of weight gain (VG) and volumetric gain (VG). The ability  of treatment to restrict  dimensional changes is expressed as anti­ swelling efficiency (ASE). Results showed that the weight and volume of both eucalypts specimens substantially increased after acety- lation. In all cases, karri specimens showed higher weight gain, volumetric gain and ASE than jarrah.  The effectiveness of acetylation increased with increases in reaction time. Volumetric swelling reduction of more thaw 80% was found in the two regrowth eucalvots.

Abstract

the study is aimed to find the isolation techniques and properties al lignin component of black Liquors from pulp industry.The samples were taken from Basuki Rahmat pulp industry, namely black liquor of sulfate pulping from evaporator (with pH 13. 52) and from digester (pH 10.58), and from Basuki Teguh, namely neutral sulfite semi chemical pulping (pH 6.85). The isolation was conducted by using two kinds of acid i.e. sulphuric acid 2 N and chloric 2 N each at pH 3. and pH 5.The result revealed that the yield and quality of lignin isolated at pH 2 was higher than other pH levels. At this pH level, the lignin produced from sulfate pulping black liquor of exporator was 21.04%, and from digester was 7.47 %, and of neutral sulfide semi chemical pulping was 0.57%. the lignin properties of each black liquor were as the following : pure lignin content was 70.41 %, 72. 55 % and 68. 29 % , respectively ; methoxyl content was 5. 62 %, 11.17 % and 8. 95 % respectively, and particle surface area was 33.87 m3/g, 29.81 m2/g and 28.03 m2/g, respectively,Different from other lignin properties, highest acidity and water absorption capacity of lignin was produced by one which was isolated by chloric acid at pH level 5. the water absorption capacity and lignin acidity of sulfate pulping black liquor of evaporator was 122.45% and pH 6; and of digester was 119. 17 % and pH 6.03; and of neutral sulfide semi chemical pulping was 116.60 % and pH 5.53.

Abstract

The damages of soil and vegetation caused by felling and yarding operations are unavoidable eventhough the operations are done very carefully.The conclusions of several previous studies related to the problem showed that residual stand damages and ground exposure are influenced by logging operation, because felling and yartling operations are carried out without proper planning.The aim of the study is to find the level of residual stand damage, total trees felled per unit area, and ground exposure caused by felling and yarding operations.The study was carried out in a forest concession of PT Kayu Tribuana Rama in Central Kalimantan in 1991. the gathered data were analysed by simple linier regression analysis.1.The average . of residual stand damage caused by felling and yarding operations is 11.1% for the average total trees felled of 5.9 trees/Ha.2. the effect of total trees felled per unit area on residual stand damage is highly significant. logging operations in Sleeper slope could increase residual stand damage.3. The average of ground exposure caused by logging operation is 19. 7% .for the average total trees felled of 5. 9 trees/ha.4. The effect of total trees felled per unit area cm ground exposure is not significant. logging operations in the company is not planned to comply with TPTI regulations.

Abstract

The purpose of the experiment is to study intercrop planting technique of soybean (var. Willis) on acidic soil among Acacia mangium Willd at HTI Mandiangin, Pekan Baru - Riau.Total area of the experiment covers 0.5 ha, divided into 5 treatment plots of 1000 m2 each. Treatments used in the experiment were: control, lime, lime + anorganic fertilizer, compost and compost + anorganic fertilizer. :Lime. was applied in the order of 2 ton/ha, compost 20 ton/ha and 60 kg urea, 45 kg TSP, 45 kg KCl for 2 period. Rhizogin was used fis biofertilizer to promote growth while Azordin 15 WSC and Dithane M 45 were used as pesticides.The resulls of the experiment for plot 1 (control) showed that the productions of biomass was 383.6 kg/ha, wet pod was 645.4kg/ha, dry pod was 466.7 kg/ha soybean was 275.7 kg/ha, average number of root nodule was 4 and plant heigt was 25.90 cm.Plot ll (acidic soil + lime): the productions of biomass was. 745.8 kg/ha, wet pod was 792 kg/ha, dry pod was 578.6 kg/ha, soybean was 436.5 kg/ha, the number of root nodule was 16 and plant height was 42.38 cm.Plot III (acidic soil +lime + anorganic fenilizer), the productions off biomass was 1331 kg/ha,.wet pod was 1067 kg/ha, dry pod was 805.8 kg/ha, soybean was 525.8kg/ha, the number of root nodule was 17 and plant height was 44.76 cm.Plot IV (acidic soil + compost) : the productions of biomass was 1113.2 kg/ha, wet pod was 1364 kg/ha, dry pod was 963.9kg/ha, soybean was 648 kg/ha, the number of root nodule was 22 and plant height was 38.55 cm.Plot V.(acidic soit+Compost+ anorganic fertilizer): the productions of biomass was 1573 kg/ha, wet pod was 2406.6 kg/ha, dry pod was 1531 kg/ha, soybean was 1060.4 kg/ha, the number of root nodule was 24 and plant height was 55.88 cm.The experiment proved that the range from the highest lo the lowest soybean production was given by compost + anorganic fertilizer(384 %),followed by compost (235%), lime + anorganic fertilizer (190 %), lime (125 %) and control (100 %). It is proved that intercrop planting promote the growth of Acacia mangium Willd i.e: compost + anorganic fertilizer (215 %), lime + anarganic fertilizer (173 %), compost (148 %), lime (163 %) and control (100 %).It is evident that compost has an important role in increasing pH or conducting more nutrients uptake, reduction of A1 toxiclty and eliminating nutrient leaching.

Abstract

This report presents result of a study on air drying properties and kiln drying schedule of ten  wood species from  Nusa   Tenggara Barat. the study  was   carried out   based On data from  quick drying test. The result shows that, the quality of almost all of the species dried using  air drying method are  inferior compared with that obtained from kiln drying. the ten wood species used   in the study can be grouped into four  drying schedules,  ringin, kabaukafa, sabaha and niu can be grouped into schedules  1 (easy to dry), katowi and kencari schedule 2, whereas red monggo and konca schedule 3, and mongo schedule  4 (difficult to dry).

Abstract

Gross and anatomical features of nine lesser known species of the Meliaceae family were observed and described for identification purposes. Fiber dimension were also measured for evaluation of their quality.Five out of nine species observed have decorative appearance, they are: Azadirachta indica, Dysoxylum acutangulum, Dysoxylum caulostachyum, Toona celebica and Toona sinensis. These wood species are therefore recommended for furniture or panelFor identification purposes, several important features, were noted : a) vessels ring poreus in Melia dubia, Toona celebica and Toona sinensis , b) fiber septase in Agalia eusideroxylon, Amoora rubiginosa, Dysoxyluni. acutangulum and Dysoxylum caulostachyum; c).roy homocelular in Aglaia eusideroxylon and Azadirachta indica.Seven species contain fiber with medium qualily for pulp making purposes. Two species contain fiber wilh low quality. No single species contain fiber with high quality.
