Abstract

Sago tree (Metroxylon rumphii) is a potential source of starch and an important contributor of non timber forest products for foodstuff reserve because it has a high carbohydrate content particularly starch. The idea of converting sago starch into dextrin compound is to enhance wider use and increase the economic value of the this commodity. Dextrin has been known for its use as additives in textile industries, pulp/paper industries and pharmaceutical industries.A laboratory trial has been conducted to convert sago into dextrin harnessing the activities of particular enzymes. The aim of this trial was to figure out optimum condition of enzymatic 'sago-processing into satisfactory-quality dextrin, able to comply with the requirement of Indonesian National Standard (INS). The target is to obtain appropriate technology development in sago-derived dextrin.The result revealed that the optimum condition was obtained at substrate concentration of 25 percent with enzyme dosage at 0,9 gram per kg of substrate (dry-weight). In this condition, the dextrin solubility complies with the INS requirement; i.e 25 percent with enzyme dosage at 0,5 gram per kg of substrate (dry- weight).

Abstract

This report deals with assessing the performance of  tusam (Pinus merkusii Jungh et de Vries)  log - removal using particular skyline system.  The assessment in this regard is pointed out by the aim of this study, i.e.   observing the productivity and operation cost of such removal.Related with those cases, investigation has been conducted and located in Cikajang Sub Forestry District,  Garut Forest District,  under the Indonesian State Forest Enterprise in West Java.  The  topographical location has a slope at about 5° - 50°  with altitude ranging around 900 - 1000 m above sea level.  The skyline machine used was a yarder manufactured in Japan with the brand name as "IWAFUJI" and engine power at115 HP.  The harvesting or removal of tusam  log was done using a clear-cutting system.The result revealed that the removal productivity varied from 25.07  to 43.17  m3  hm per hour with average at 33.33  m3 hm per hour. Meanwhile,  the corresponding production cost was Rp.  16,879.3 per m3.   It turned out that such productivity (Y) was significantly affected by real removal frequency  (X),  which further could be expressed in regression equation Y = 1.0659  + 0.1245 X (r=0.5852)  with F-calc = 4.15 greater than F-table = 2.1).  The opening soil was 5 percent.

Abstract

Wood materials from plantation timber, among others is mangium (Acacia mangium Willd.) are supposed to be more susceptible to the wood-degrading organisms. This situation can expectedly be overcome by improving wood durability through a proper preservation. Previous study of the preservation of mangium wood was only by cold soaking treatment, using boron preservative. In order to provide a complete practical guidance of wood preservation, it would be necessary to study the preservation of such mangium by hot-cold treatment with not only boron but also CCB (copper-chrome-boron) preservatives.Mangium wood samples, after reaching their air-dry condition in block-shaped size measuring 5cm by 5cm by 100cm were treated by hot-cold soaking separately in solution of boron and CCB preservatives, varying at consecutively 5 percent, 7,5 percent and 10 percent. The treatment in this regard was implementing a particular schedule, which involved the regulation of soaking durations and temperatures. The durations in the hot-soaking stage for each preservative strength were 1 hour, 2 hours and 3 hours, with the temperature maintained at 65 to 70 °C. In the following cold-soaking stage, the durations were fixed for one day.The results showed that mangium wood treated with hot-cold soaking in either boron or CCB solution and implementing such particular schedule was only applicable for indoor uses, i.e. being under the roof utilization without ground contact. In this matter, the optimum strength for boron as well as CCB preservatives was 10 percent whereby the durations of hot-soaking stage were from one and three hours, followed by cold-soaking stage for one day.

Abstract

Determination of the formaldehyde emission from particleboard can correspond to the American and Japan Standards. However, the difference in preparing the test sample of particlebourd can bring about different results on the determination of such formaldehyde emission. this report deals with assessing the effect of conditioning duration and the use of paraffin in preparing the test sample of particleboard in accordance with both American and Japan Standars on the formaldehyde emission.The results revealed that conditioning duration and the me of puroffin affected significantly theemission of formaldehyde from the tested sample of particleboard the longer the duration, the lower, the emission level. Meanwhile, the use of paraffin on the particleboard sample tended to lower its formaldehyde emission than the one from the sample without paraffin. The relation between conditioning duration (X) and formaldehyde emission (Y) could further be expressed in linear regression equations with significant negative correlation coefficients (r) as follows: Without paraffinY = 4.20- 0.27X ( r = - 0. 9348); US standardY = 12.68- 0.98X ( r = - 0. 9433 ); Japan standard with paraffin.Y= 2.75 - 0.22X ( r = - 0.9756); US standardY = R.46 - 0.33X ( r = - 0.9824); Japan standard At a given conditioning duration, the average emission of formaldehyde from the particleboard with paraffin decreased by 1.61 µg/mm (according to American Standards) and 2.14 µg/ml (according to Japan Standard). Therefore, such figures confirmed the case that different sample preparation to particleboard in accordance with American and Japan Standards brought about different levels of formaldehyde emission.

Abstract

This report deals with an experiment on the manufacture of activated charcoal from the wastes of tea­ leaf processing. The purpose of the experiment was firstly, to evaluate the influence of H3P04 concentration as a chemical activator on the yield of activated charcoal and its quality, and secondly, to assess the possible use o( the corresponding activated charcoal in purifying fructose syrup as well as alcoholic spirit, and reducing the Fe1 ions in the pond water . The tea­leaf wastes were at first immersed in H1P04 solutions at four different concentrations (i.e. 5, 10, 15 and 20 %).for 24 hours. The wastes were removed and air­dried. The activated charcoal was produced by pyrolyzing the air­dry tea­leaf wastes in an electrical heated retort at 850°C, followed by the activation process. The steam was introduced into the retort and passed through the pyrolized tea­leaf wastes for 120 minutes.. The result revealed that the best quality ofthe activated charcoal was obtained with H3P04 immersion at 10 % with the yield of activated charcoal 13.78 %; the moisture content 6.92 %; ash content 15.68 %, volatile matter 4.68 % and fixed carbon 72. 71 %. Adsorptive capacity of iodine was 796.82 mglg, benzene 5.58 %, CHC1,4.14 % and adsorptive capacity of CC14,14.19 %.The quality of fructose syrup and alcoholic spirit after both being purified with the activated charcoal apparently improved. This was shown by the increases in clarity from 87.0 % to 92.0 ­ 97.2 % (for fructose syrup) and from 243.0 mg/L to 255.6­278.4 mg/L (for alcoholic spirit). The quality of the deep­weel water or particularly pond water also after being treated with the activated charcoal improved as well with the decrease in Fe3+ ions from 0.079 % to 0.016 ­0.045 %. The production cost to manufacture activated charcoal from tea­leaf wastes was Rp 5,738.82/kg.

Abstract

Investigation on assessing the productivity and cost of log-skidding using a farm tractor type Ford 5660 was carried out at the Semaras plantation forest under PT. lnhutani's concession situated in Pulau Laut (South Kalimantan) in 1999. The objective was to get appropriate and reliable information on the productivity and cost of log-skidding. The data collected were skidding-distance, working time, log volumes, purchasing- cost. and labor wage; and further, they were all incorporated for assessment.The results were: I). Log volumes skidded using the farm tractor ranged between 0.065 - 1.134 m3/ one- trip with an average of 0.434 m3/one- trip, while skidding-distance varied from 0.25 - 1.85 hm with an average of 0.937 hm, 2). Skidding time was in the range of 0.06 - 1. 14 hours/one-trip with an average of 0.23 hours/one-trip, 3). The productivity of log-skidding using the farm tractor recorded between 0.062 -6.086 m3-hm/hour with an average of 2.075 m3-hm/hour, while the cost of log-skidding was in the range of Rp 9,522/m3-hm - Rp 931,000/m3-hm with average at Rp 55.777/m3-hm. and 4). In implemanting the use of fram tractor for logskidding, the log volume and skidding-distance are suggested at about 1.2 m3 and 2 hm, respectively.

Abstract

The machining properties of four lesser known wood species from natural forest in Kalimantan has been investigated. The wood species were gading (Koilodepes sp.), penjalin (Drypetes sp.), arang (Diospyros macrophylla B.) and sibau (Blumeodendron kurzii I.I Sm) with their specific gravities, i.e. 0.83, 0.81, 0.55, and 0.56, respectively. Further, assessment was conducted on the relation between wood characteristics (i.e. specificgravity and vessel diameters) and the possible occurrence of defect due to machining. The machining work included planning, shaping, boring, turning and sanding.The results revealed that machining properties were significantly affected by wood specific and vessel diameter. The higher the specific gravity and the smaller the pore diameter, the less defect that resulted from wood machining. As such, the machining quality of gading and penjalin woods was regarded as very good. Meanwhile, the machining qualities of arang and sibau woods as good to very good. Therefore, to infer, wood with higher specific gravity tends to improve machining properties. Likewise, wood with larger vessel diameter will downgrade the machining properties.
