Abstract

This paper  presented   the  result  of  study   on  sawing  and  machining  properties   of  six  Indonesian   wood  species  being developed   as raw  materials  for  the  wood   working   industries.   The  sawing  properties   studied   comprise   of  sawn  timber recovery,   sawing  velocity   and power   consumption.    Whereas  the  machining  properties   of  the  timber  were tested  according to  the  modified   ASTM D-1666   as described   in the  Forest  Products  Research  Institute   Report   No.   160  (1982).The   result  showed   that  all of  the  species  has good  sawn  timber  recovery,   i.e.  more  than 50%. Three of  them  can be cut  eastiy wilh  higher  sawing  velocity   and  lower  power  consumption    in comparison  with  the other  three.  The species  that have good or very good  machining  properties   is merkuyung   (Shorea johorensis).  Species  of  meranti  merah  (Shorea  fallax) has  relatively  poor   machining  properties.    Whereas  the  other  four  species  are good   in some  properties   and  fair  to poor in others.

Abstract

             This paper  deals  with  the  study   on  the  fiberboard   properties   of  A.  mangium,  E. deglupta and  E. urophylla.  The cooking  process  applied   consisted  of hot  caustic soda semi chemical process  and prehydrolysis   prior  to mechanical pulping process.The  hot  caustic  soda  semi  chemical  process   used  the  condition   as follows:   alkali  concentration    was 35 g/l,  wood  to liquor  ratio  was 1    :   8, maximum   temperature   was  100° C and  this  temperature   was kept  for two  hours.  The prehydrolisis prior  to  mechanical  process  was prepared   in the autoclave  with  the wood  to liquor  ratio ;of   .     1    :  8, maximum   temperature was  175  ± 1°C  and  this  temperature   was  kept   for  60  seconds,   and  the pressure  of  7 -   12 kg/cm2.      Sheet  forming  was done   by  wet  felting process  in the deckle box,   the pressing pressure  was 50  kg/cm2,      temperature   was 170° C for  10 mi- nutes.  Heat  treatment   was given for 3 hours at temperature  of  170° C without  pressure.The  result  shows  that  the  cooking  process  has a  significant   influences  on  the  moisture  content,   water  absorption, thickness   swelling,   tensile  strength  parallel  to  surface  and  modulus   of  rupture   of  the  fiberboard.   Likewise,   the  wood species  has a  significant   influence   on pulp  yield,   moisture  content,   water  absorption   and  thickness  swelling.  The interac- tion of  both  factors  only  significantly  influences   modulus  of rupture  and modulus  of elasticity.The  highest  pulp  yield  was from  A.  mangium  followed   by  E. deglupta,  and  E. urophylla.  Almost  overall properties of  fiberboard   met   the  FAO  standard,  except   for  the  water  absorption   and  tensile  strength  parallel  to surface  of  E. uro- phylla.  The  mechanical process   produced   fiberboard   with  better  water  absorption   and  thickness  swelling  than  that of hot caustic  soda  semi  chemical  process.   On  the  other  hand  the  tensile  strength  parallel  to surface  and  modulus   of  rupture of  the  fiberboard  produced    by  hot  caustic  soda  semi-chemical   process   was  found   better   than  that  of  the  mechanical pulping.

Abstract

This  study   was  carried  out  at  a sawmill  in  Lampung,   Sumatera.   The sawmill  had  two  unit  of  band-headrigs   with different  type  of  machines,   namely  a conventional    mill  and  a modern   one.   The design of  the modern  mill is more  sophis- ticated   in  characteristics   as  figured   in  Table   1.    Accuracy    of  sawn   timber   was  determined    by  comparison    between actual  size  and  target size  of  the  lumber  thickness.   The  data  were  collected   from  measurement   of  1OO pieces  of  lumber selected  randomly   from  each mill production.The  result  showed   that  the  machine  sophistication    has a significant   effect  on sawn  timber  size accuracy.  The more sophisticated   machine   can  give  more  than  10%    benefit   of  sawn  timber  production    compared   to  the  conventional   one. The level of sawing accuracy  on conventional   mill  is 88.15%,     whereas  the  modern  mill could  reach 98.29%.

Abstract

The  results  of  strength   test  of  solid  and glue  laminated   timbers  represented   by  Kapur,  Teak  and  Red  Meranti  are reported  in this paper.  The method   used for  the  testing  was the  ASTM  D 143-1970.For  the purpose   of  the  test,  8 x  12 x  400  cm  lumbers  of  the  three species  were divided  into  two groups  being de- signated  respectively  for  test  in solid  and glue  laminated    form.   The  first  group  were tested  for modulus of rupture,  com- pression  parallel  to  the grain and shear strength  under  air dry  condition.  In  bending  tests,  two  methods  of  loading  were applied,  namely  perpendicular   and parallel  to  the  laminae   in case  of glue laminated   timbers,  and along radial or tangential direction  for solid timbers.The  second   group   were  resawn  further   into  0. 9  cm  and   1.  9 cm  thick    timber  strips,  respectioely,   for  small size tests  of  the  glue  laminated  specimens.    The  0.9  cm  thick  strips  which  were air-dried  and   then   glued  with   CIBA  Phenol resorcinol-formal-dehyde     adhesives,  were designated   for  test  on  modulus   of  rupture  and  compression.    The  1.9   cm   thick strips  were divided  further   into  five  batches,   and each of which  were dried respectively  until  25,  20,  15,  10 and  5 percent moisture   content   before   glueing  with  the  above   mentioned   adhesive   into  six  different  combination   of  test pieces  namely Teah-Meranti   (JM),   Teak-Kapur  (JK),  Meranti-Kapur    (MK),  Kapur-kapur   (KK),   Teak-Teak     (JJ) and  meranti-Meranti    (MM).The  results  of  the  tests  are presented   in  Table   1   and  2  for  modulus   of  rupture   and  compression  parallel  to  the grain;  and Tabel 3 and 4 respectively  for  the shear   tests of the six  lamination   combination.

Abstract

Tulisan  ini menyajikan hasil penelitian  variasi kerapatan  arah longitudinal  dan beberapa sifat  mekanis  kayu  aren yang diambil  dari Jasinga,  Jawa Barat. Beberapa  sifat yang  disebut   belakangan termasuk  di dalamnya  adalah keteguhan  lentur, keteguhan tekan,  keteguhan  pukul  radial/tangensial  dan kekerasan  ujung/sisi permukaannya.Analisis  statistik   menggunakan  prosedur  analisa   tersarang,  menunjukkan  suatu  pengaruh   beda nyata  tempat  kedudukan  di atas tanah  terhadap  kekuatannya    pada  kadar air kayu  kering  udara.   Walaupun  demikian pengaruh  serupa  tidak terlihat jelas pada kondisi  kadar air kayu  basah.

Abstract

This study   evaluates  the  susceptibility   of  ramin (Gonystilus bancanus Kurz),  jelutung    (Dyera  sp),   mentibu   (Dacty- locladus  stenostachys  Oliv)  and  meranti   batu  (Shorea   sp)  against  sapstain.   The  material  used  consists  of  debarked   and unbarked   fresh  logs.  The  tested  logs  were  tried  at  swamp  forest   in  West  Kalimantan   in November   -   December   1978.The  data  were analysed  by  Nested   Classification  method.   The  degree  of  damage  was transformed   into  arcsin √%Inspections   were conducted   biweekly   for one month  after  treatment.The  result  showed  that  the  average degree  of  damage due    to  the sapstain  were  not  different  among  the four  wood species.  The effect  of debarking  treatment   increases the log susceptibility. There is no different of staining degree among  the log cutting  from  the  base, middle  and top of  the trees.

Abstract

The  anatomical   features  of  aren stem  in relation  to  its utilization   were  studied   by  taking  samples  from  Bogor  Re- gency,   West Java.   The  mature  stem  has 8 to 10 m of clear bole with  30 to 43 cm  in diameter.  The hard pheripheral  region of  the stem  is only  0.5 to 5.2  cm in thickness   or 4 to 20 percent  of the .stem  volume.The pheripheral  region of  the stem  consists  largerly of fibrouascular  bundles  while  the central portion   consists  mainly bf parenchyma   tissues.  The frequency   of  vascular bundles  at pheripheral  region may  reach 139 bundle/sq.  cm  then gradually decreased  to 10 bundles/sq.   cm at the center.The  fiber  dimension   vary along and  across the  stem:   length  1618  to 2712  microns,  diameter.28   to 52 microns,  wallthickness  5 to 24 microns.   The Runhell  ratio varies from  0. 56 to 13.33.

Abstract

The  objective  of  this study   is to determine   the  sawing properties   of  triclopyr  poisoned   rasamala logs compared   to the girdled and normal ones.   The effect  of sawing pattern  on sawing properties   were also observed.The  log samples  used  in this  experiment  comprise  of  18 pieces  which  were collected  from  three different groups  of tree  (poisoned   and  girdled  in one  year periode,   and control).   Six  logs of  each group  were sawn  in two  sawing patterns, namely   live sawing  and  semi-quarter   sawing.   Parameters  of  sawing observed  include  recovery,  productivity,  power   con- sumption,   and sawn timber  defects,  particulary  splits and bowing.The  results  of  study   revealed  that  moisture  content   of poisoned   logs was 20%  lower  than  the  normal  one.   Mean-while,   both  moisture  content  of girdled logs and poisoned   ones are not significantly  diferent.       Poisoning  treatment   on  rasamala trees  in comparison   to girdled and normal ones did not show  significant  difference in  any  sawing properties,   except   sawing productivity.   The  sawing  recovery,  power   consumption,    splits  and  bowing  of sawn  timber  were  62%;  32.37  watt  sec./cm2,     5.21   cm  and  3.91   cm,   respectively.   The  live sawing could  increase the pro- ductivity as much  as 0.18   m3 /hour  higher than semi-quarter   sawing.

Abstract

The  composting   experiment  for  the  manufacture   of  compost   from  jeungjing  sawdust  has been done  in the Forest Products  Research  and  Development    Centre,  Bogor.  The  study   reveals that  a combination   of 60 percent   of jeungjing  saw- dust  and  40 percent   of  rice straw  composted   for  about  35  days produced   compost   with  45,87   of  C/N ratio  which  is in- ferior compare  to the minimum   C/N ratio of  the soil that should  be less than 20.In  the past,   attempts  have  been  made   by  many   workers   to  reduce   C/N  ratio  of  compost.   Inclusion   of  additives such as urea in the composting,   has been successfully   done.The  composting   trials in the  Forest  Product  Research  and  Development    Centre  was prepared   by the mixture   of 60 percent   of jeungjing  sawdust  and 40 percent   of  rice straw,   on  which  an amount   of  O;   3;  3,5;   5,  7 percent  urea by weight was added  to the mixture.   The composting   time  were consecutively   8; 16; 24,  and 32 days.This experiment reveals that  :1.The  analysis  of  variance of  the  C/N ratio  content   of  the  compost  produced   by different   urea content   and composting time,  are significantly   different.2.The composition   of  60  percent   jeungjing  sawdust  and  40 percent   rice straw  composted   for  about  35  days,  produced compost   with  a  relatively   law  C/N  ratio  (about   18,46).    This  is  particularly   true  when   7,5   percent   of  the  urea was engaged  in the  composting   process.   The  C/N ratio content   has met  the requirement   of  the compost  for fertilizer  which is about  20.

Abstract

The  purpose   of  this  research  is to  compare   the  phvsico-chemical    properties   of  cananga oil from  Blitar,  Boyolali, and  Cirebon  with  the  Indonesian   Insutrial  Standard   requirement.   Cananga oils are obtained   from  the  distiller  in Blitar and  Boyolali   regencies.  The  distilling   method   used  in these  regencies are cohobations.   The distilling  time  was 40  hours in Blitar  and 36  hours  in Boyolali,  whereas,  cananga oil properties   from  Cirebon  was based on the literature.   To find  out the difference   in properties,   the student's t-test   was applied.The  results   indicated   that   colour   (visual),   specific  gravity,   refractive   index,   ester  number,  and  ester  content   of cananga  oils  from   Blitar,  Boyolali,  and  Cirebon  have  met  Indonesian   Industrial  Standard  requirement   (Sll.  0026  -   73), except   for  the ester  number  and ester content   of  cananga oil from  Boyolali.  Based on the ester number,  cananga oil from Cirebon  had  a  better  quality   than  that  of  Blitar or Boyolali.  Cananga oil from  Boyolali  had  the  lowest  quality.  Crushing cananga  flowers   before   distilling,  decreased   the  ester  number,   ester  content,   and  yield   of  the  resulting  oil.   Therefore, the crushing of raw of  the cananga flowers prior  to processing  was found   unnecessary.
