Abstract

Five wood species Shorea hopeifolia Sym; Palaquium ferox H.J.L.; Dillenia eximia Miq; Hopea sangal Kortn.; Tristania maingayi Duthie treated with copper-chrome-arsenic (CCA) preservative, were studied using the full cel process. The treatments comprising concentration, pressure, and pressure period, and the responses are penetration and the retention of preservative.

Abstract

An  investigation   on  the  productivity  of  D7G  Caterpillar  tractors  was carried out  at a  forest  company   in Jambi  in 1985.   Three  tractors  were  selected   randomly   to  be  observed.   The productivity  of  these  tractors  was collected   through work   time  study.   The  purpose   is  to  find   the productivities   of  D7G  Caterpillar  tractors  so  that this  information   can  be used  by  forest  companies   in planning  skidding  operations.   This  investigation   results  reveal  that  : 1.  D7G  Caterpillar  tractors  can be used to skid  logs at dryland  forests  having easy and moderate topographies.  At  skidding distances  ranuine from   75 -   535  m  with  an average of 324  m these tractors can skid  logs having volumes  ranging from 5.01 -   16.88  m3/trip   with  an average of 9.08   m3/trip.2.  The  average productivities    of  A,  B and   C skidding   tractors  were  59.22,   89.81 and 123.69   m8.   hm/hour,  respectively.The  productivities    among  tractors  were significantly   different  due  to different skidding  distances,   tractor  conditions, driver  skills,  average stund   volume  per  ha,   soil conditions,   skidded   log volume  and  topography.   The  average produc- tivity  of  the  three  tractors  was  92.09   m3 hm/hour.

Abstract

The  result  of  a study   on some  physical  and chemical  properties  of saga laut seed oil prepared  using pressing  method is presented   in this  report.The  result  shows   that  the  average  value  of  moisture   content,'  boiling  point,  specific  gravity,  iodine  number,   acid number   and saponification    value  respectively   are 0,137  percent,   166, 7 degrees celcius,  0,939,   31.04,   10,33  and  166, 72. Properties  of saga laut  seed  oil appear  to  be close  to  tengkawang  oil.

Abstract

An investigation on lac cultivation was carried out in Probolinggo Forest District in September 1988. The purpose is to find possible ways of increasing the production. Host trees and methods for lac cultivation were observed. The results reveal that: Kesambi trees are good as the host for lac cultivation because they have sap density of 0.16 and sap reaction of 0.59 which which condition is favorable for lac survivals.Higher lac production can be obtained by using host trees that have many branches and twigs. Therefore, host trees need to be pruned in order to provide many new branches and twigs.Lacquor secretion yield can be harvested 5 months after lac cultivation. The lacquor production, thew is sorted intolacquor for cultivation and industrial materials. The cultivated lac can produce lacquor to the amount of three to five fold, depending on the quality of lac cu1tivated and the existance of diseases.

Abstract

An  investigation   on  residual   stand  damages  caused  by skidding  tractor  on several stand  density   levels was carried out  at PT Sumpol   Timber  in South  Kalimantan  in 1987.  Forty   five  sample plots  were selected  randomly  in this research. The purpose   is to gather  information   about  the resdiual stand damages caused by skidding  tractor on several stand density levels.   The  result  of  investigation   reveals that  :                                                                                                                                                                                              1.  The number    of  trees  having   diameter   of  20  cm  and  up  varies   from  80   to  300  trees/ha  with  an  average of  190.22 trees/ha.                                                                                                                                               2.  The  residual stand  damages  for  the  area with  stand  densities  ot < 150,  150 -199,   and >  200  trees/ha  were 16,  7, 28.3,and  39. 0 trees/ha,  respectively.   They  are significantly   different.3.  It  is suggested  that   the  skidding   operations,    especially   in  high  stand  density   levels, be done  with  better  planning   in-order  to save powers,  costs  and  resources.

Abstract

This study   is intended   to recognize  the  behaviour  and  infestation   rate  of  marine  borers. Forty  samples  of pine  wood,  measuring  120  cm  x  5 cm x 5 cm,. vertically  floated  at Ram but Island seashore.  These samples  are divided   in  to  three  section:    top,  midle  and  bottom.    The observation   were carried out  after  1,  2,  3 and  6 months    by  splitting   the  sample.The results  showed  that  the  infestation   started  from  the bottom   upwards.  The length  and diameter  of the burrow  is controlled    to  a  certain  extent    by  the  intensity   of  the  borer population    in  the  wood.   When crowded,   the  borer  may grow  only  a few  cm.   After six  months   of  experiment,    the  infestation   rate of  samples  showed   the following   regression equation;  i.e,  top section  Y 1=   0, 134 (X)2,375,   milde section   Y2= 2,569  (X)1,113   and bottom  section  Y 3=  3,334  (X)0,142.

Abstract

This paper presents the result of a laboratory study on the properties of Urea formaldehyde resin manufactured with 5 molar ratio treatment of Urea and formaldehyde, and its effect on plywood glue shear strength. All composition of the Urea formaldehyde produced, and its physical properties (appearance, sticky matter, pH and viscosity) meet the Indonesian Indu.stry Standard for class 2a quality.The effects of Urea and formaldehyde molar ratio on glue shear strength of plywood were not significantly different. The average value of glue shear strength of Urea formaldehyde molar ratio 1 : 1,2 and 1 : 1,4 were meet the Indonesian Industry Standard.

Abstract

The intensity of sapstain infestation on tusam logs (Pinus merkusii Jungh. et de Vr.) was studied in a field of Suka- bumi Forest District, West Java. The material used consisted of one meter long fresh logs taken from newly felled trees. The tested logs were tried at the filed for three months using four storage levels.Surface staining and the loss of water content were weekly observed for one .month, while the rate of staining penetration was observed for three months after the treatment.The result showed that the degree of staining defect was significantly defferent within the period of inspection, but that was not among the log sections. The rate of staining penetration is approximately 5 cm per week.

Abstract

Survey on wood-destroying organisms attacking people's houses was carried out at Padalarang (Bandung district), Cibadak (Sukabumi districtj, and Pacet (Cianjur district). Data collection were done by interviewing and filling-out questionaire forms. Result of the investigation indicated that local timber and bamboo are used largely for house components. Wood destroying organisms found attacking the components are rotting fungi, subterranean termites, dry-wood termites, and powder post-beetles.

Abstract

Chemical    analyses   of  Aren   stem   (Arenga  pinnata  Merr)  from  Jasinga,  Bogor  has  been  conducted   at  the  Forest Products  Research  and Development   Centre  laboratory  in Bogor.  The analyses comprised  of the determination   of cellulose, lignin,  pentosan,   ash and  silica,   calorific   value,  extractioes  and  the  solubility    in sodium   hydroxide.  These  analyses  were commonly   conducted   to determine   basic characteristics  and  ultimate   uses of  wood.The  average of  the   cellulose,    lignin,  pentosan,    ash and  silica,   extractives    content,   solubility   in  sodium   hydroxide and  calorific   value  of  the  peripheral  portion   were  consecutively   as follow:      25,02%,    33,7%,    19,55%,    1,4   and  0,51%,6,65  % (in cold water),   10,06  % (in hot  water),   3,86  % (in alcohol-benzene),    35,51  % in sodium  hydroxide   and 4406  kal/g. While  for  the  central  portion,   the  above  analyses  showed   averages as  follow   :    44,82   %, 36,8  %,   16,57  %,  4,18   % and  1,32  %,  22,88    % (in cold  water),  32, 74 % (in hot  water),  4,82   %  (in alcohol-benzene),     59,80   % in sodium  hydroxide   and 4035  kal/g.  The extractive  content    of Aren stem  ranked  high in the characteristics  and ultimate   uses of wood classification.Based  on  chemical  analyses,   such  as the  cellulose  content,   lignin, peniosan   and extractive   content,   the  Aren stem from  Jasinga,  Bogor,  appeared  to  be  a poor  materipl  for pulp  and paper  industry.
