Abstract

The tradition of illustrated writing and drawing was found in the old manuscripts of Indonesia. Some parts of those old manuscripts show unique illustrations depicting local identity of Nusantara. It is thought that the manuscript reflects societal culture of thinking as well as aesthetic achievement of visual art. The illustrations of those old Javanese manuscripts were well documented and represented in various visual styles, drawing methods, themes, and visualized objects; even though their visual concepts practically resembles to each other.  The presented paper discusses the visual character and styles of illustrations found in the old manuscripts of Java within the year of 1800-1920. The illustration in those old Javanese manuscripts shows continuous correlation to the visual style of the past era and the present. Thus, it emboldens the characteristics of Indonesian visual states. It reflects structured illustration and visual style as well as expressive symbols of the Javanese society. Illustration of the old Javanese manuscript in the year 1800-1920 showed some changes and uniqueness in its visuals, comprising interaction between animism in the Pre-Hinduism era, cultural paradigm of Hinduism-Budhism, Islamic beliefs, and Colonialism. Having observed the visual illustration in the old Javanese manuscripts, it can be deduced that their styles are characterized as decorative, naturalistic, realistic, simple, and deformed.

Abstract

Impressionism is an art movement that firstly established in France in the middle of 19th century. Claude Monet, Èdouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Edgar Degas are famous male impressionist artists that were known by many, yet there are famous female impressionist artists such as Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Eva Gonzales, and Marie Bracquemond that deserve to be known as well. The presented paper discusses the aesthetics value and meanings of paintings of these female impressionist artists, through the perspective of art criticism, historical method, and women studies. Object of analysis are paintings that depicting domestic life made by mentioned artists above. Results show that the depicted domestic life in those paintings presented a unique gaze of a woman, as shown in the representation of body language to express the relationship between mother and children. Thus, female impressionist paintings emphasize more on the activities and aspiration of women than the beauty of their bodies. The painted theme shows that the artists express gender equality and/or independent (or self-supporting) women, which are presented in an equal aesthetic quality compared to those of male impressionist artists.

Abstract

This study looks to understand more on the possibility of improving the quality of housing environment based on community initiative that sustain residents’ effort to accommodate changes of their surroundings, by observing housing-environment at jalan Gagak – Bandung as an area for case study. The analysis focuses on: (1) the socio-capital of community involvement, stating condition of internal organized efforts in addressing needs of the community, and (2) the roles of external parties, stating the involvement of external actors both of government and privates. For the study, the authors conducted focus-group discussions on group of residents at RW 18 and RW 19 Kelurahan Sadang Serang, Kecamatan Coblong – Bandung, as well as interviewing local leaders. Results of observation indicate that residents possess interests and self-trust to develop their environment and willing to provide supplies for it. They have tendency to set preferences on what orderly environment should look like including rejecting ideas of apartment-like housing as it is feared to create “slum”-ness and “inappropriateness” fire-emergency access. As residents put concern on the facts that there are no shared-values among them in addressing problems of space and inactivity of local leaders, resulting in the market-driven changes of spatial development that intervening the needs of public. Thus, it is necessary to decentralize the process of organizing public space, starts from government’s unit to community’s initiative. This requires strict guidelines that are fair to follow by allowing neutral parties to involve. In addition, there should be internal mechanism to build community’s initiative through “musrenbang” as a way to initiate community based development. Having the results, the authors urge future studies on different cases of community and places, to understand the dynamics of development negotiation between interested stakeholders, whether they are formal and/or informal parties.

Abstract

Defense and security are serious business, as they represent the integrity and dignity of a nation. It is understandable to assess military power and facilities as crucial to a nation’s defense, shown in the use of fighter airplanes. A fighter airplane serves as a window to represent nation’s values, philosophy and ideology; appeared through its design form and defense ability. The presented paper explores and compares 2 (two) types of fighter airplane, F-16 of US and SU-27 of Russia, in order to observe and characterize their design forms. Having acknowledged the characteristic of their design forms as tangible aspect of analysis, it is identified that this characteristic can be split into form design and numerical design. Comparative assessment of both fighter airplanes indicates that F-16 fighter airplane of US appears smaller than the SU-27 of Russia. The smaller size of F-16 form was meant to have superior maneuver-ability for air-to-air combat, while the size of SU-27 was meant to accommodate multi-tasking aspects of fighter airplane (air-to-air combat and interceptive act). As results, both airplane forms express different views and ideological perspectives. The F-16 of US shows great and superior ability to carry special task of becoming combat airplane (thrive to perfection), coming with a hefty price and catered for great quality.  On the other hand, SU-27 of Russia shows a wider purpose and not necessarily has superior ability in order to carry diverse tasks of an airplane (multi-tasking), coming with a cheaper price and catered in a great quantity.  Thus, it can be deduced that the American designer of fighter airplane tends to acknowledge specialization of military purpose compare to the Russian’s generalization of military purpose.
