However, during the New Order era, ludruk lost its political, social and financial supports. Revival attempts thus far, amidst the boom of economic developmentand other forms of entertainment, have not been particularly successful. This paper attempts tosketch a historical background based mostly on literature reviews and field visits to ludruk shows toanalyze its relevance in contemporary Surabaya.

Abstract

AbstractThe usage of Western names among ethnic Chinese in Surabaya has become a trend nowadays. In the euforia of freedom in expressing Chinese culture in this reformation era, ethnic Chinese in fact are not returning to their Chinese names formally. This study tries to reveal how is the usage of Western names by ethnic Chinese in Surabaya, and what are the factors behind it. Using quantitave approach on the names of 317 participants of HSK test in Surabaya who were born in 2000 or above, and qualitative approach on questionnaire answers of 13 respondents, it shows that the usage of Western names does more and more welcomed, and there are still many who use mixture of Western and Indonesian names. This kind of bricolage implies that ethnic Chinese are still anxious or traumatic with New Order regime, shown with the ‘resistance’ in forming a newidentity that looks different with ethnic Chinese of the old times, and with other local ethnic.

Abstract

The End of Faith karya Sam Harris.

Abstract

The absence of legal regulation in fishing activities has brought Indonesian waters to a serious degradation, especially inthe population of game fish. The most reasonable solution to this problem is performing Catch and Release (CnR).However, very little has been explored regarding the activity of fishing and CnR in Indonesia. This study aims toidentify masculinity traits in sportfishing as a masculine act. Furthermore, the result will hopefully be useful indesigning an effective campaign for CnR. This study employs qualitative method to discover how sportfishing isproduced and consumed, formulate the meaning of sportfishing to Indonesian anglers, and identify masculinity traits inthe enactment and involvement of this activity. The study concludes that sportfishing is the new hegemonic masculinity, replacing the previous conventional fishing. It is a masculine bloc that inherits classic masculine traits and combinesthem with aspects of femininity, resulting in a new adaptive model of masculinity that sustains the patriarchaldominance toward subordinate masculinity and women
