Abstract

An experiment on processing cocoa pod by soaking it in KOH solution and fermenting it with Saccharomyces sereviceae was conducted to improve its nutrient quality and it effects on Kacang goat?s physiological responses. This study was carried out with a 2x4 factorially randomized design. The first factor was soaking treatment (soaked in KOH solution or not soaked), while the second factor was 4 levels of Saccharomyces cerevisiae concentration in diets (0, 5, 10, and 15%). Each treatment was repeated three times. Responses of soaking treatment on parameters observed were analyzed with a t test while those of Saccharomyces sereviceae levels were tested with            a polynomial orthogonal test. Results indicated that there were no interactions between the soaking treatment and concentration of Saccharomyces sereviceae in affecting the parameters observed. Concentrations of erythrocyte, hemoglobin, or hematocrit increased while that of leukocyte decreased with increasing levels of Saccharomyces sereviceae in diets. Soaking the cocoa pod in KOH solution decreased the number of leukocyte but it did not affect the numbers of erythrocyte, hemoglobin, or hematocrit. Key words: Cocoa-pod husk, fermentation, goat, KOH, physiological status.

Abstract

A study was conducted to evaluated effect of forest convertion to agriculture land on diversity of dung beetles which play a major role in decomposition of animal dung and carcasses. Sample was collected from Lore Lindu national Park at different land use type i.e. primary forest, secondary forest, cacao plantation ad maize field. I recorded 18 species of dung beetles from all study sites. The result showed that there were a reduction of dung beetles diversity due to forest convertion. The species number of dung beetles at primary forest was two times higher than those in secondary forest and was three times higher compared to those in cacao plantation and maize field. Furthermore, species composition of dung beetles at primary forest was significantly different compared to all other land use type.Key words : Forest conversion, diversity, dung beetles, conservation

Abstract

The objective of the present work was to find out the effects of fermentation treatment using jamur tiram (Pleurotus sp.) on the stability of palm pressing fibre (PPF).  The digestibility (DDM, DOM, NDF, ADF) was measured in vitro after the method of Telley and Terry (1963).  Jamur tiram was grown on media having different composition of rice branch, CaCO3 and gibs [a) 16% + 2% + 2% ; b) 32% + 4% + 4% ; c) 48% + 6% + 6%]. The treatments to be studied were i) 100% PPF, ii) 80% PPF + jamur tiram on medium (a), iii) 6o% PPF + jamur tiram on medium (b), iv) 40% PPF + jamur tiram on medium (c).  The results indicated that treatment (ii) gave the highest digestibility followed by treatment (iii) and (iv).  Treatment (ii) also offered the best economic profit if compared to the rest. Key words : Digestibility, palm pressing fiber, jamur tiram.

Abstract

This addition of herbs and spices in the salted eggs is one of the ways for extending shelf life of salted eggs and to add flavor in the salted eggs, apart from the salty taste because there is the addition of salt. Herbs and spices like garlic, red onion and pepper are natural seasoning flavor that contains lot of active chemical substances that are beneficial to the body apart from giving more popular flavor with consumer. The aim of this research is to find out organoleptic properties of salted chicken eggs that are added by herbs and spices. Variance analysis results showing that salted eggs with the addition of herbs and spices from various treatment have no real effect on organleptic properties of salted eggs : egg yolk color, salty taste of egg whites and egg yolk nervousness. This matter probably caused because when salted egg are soaked with herbs and spices, salted eggs products produced change color into darker color, same saltiness and egg yolk nervousness from chicken is different from the salted egg that derives from ducks. Conclusion of this research is salted chicken eggs with the addition of herbs and spices is more preferable by panelist because it tastes more savory even though it dont have significant egg yolk color, salty taste of egg whites, and egg yolk nervousness.Keyword: organoleptic, salt eggs, herbs and spices.

Abstract

Research of macroalga diversity and bioactivity was conducted from February to September 2016 at Wediombo beach, Gunung Kidul district. The used sampling method was ?metode jelajah? and the environmental parameters measured include temperature, salinity, depth, pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen (DO), and concentration of nitrate and phosphate. Identification was based on morphological characteristics. Extraction sample was stratified using ethanol and ethyl acetate. Method of HTS (High Throughput Screening) was applied to test the potential of active compounds. Antimicrobial Test was conducted with cell growth indicators (MTT), while the indicator DPPH was used for the antioxidant test (80mg / 100ml), and TLC and GC-MS for profiling the active compound. Seventeen species macroalgal were found at the shore of Wediombo, includes: Rhodophyta (7 species), Phaeophyta (5 species) and Chlorophyta (5 species) of which were dominated by macroalgal on coral reefs. Nine macroalgae found to have antioxidant activity (Acrocystis nana, Caulerpa sp., Chaetomorpha crassa, Dictyota sp., Gracilaria canaliculata, Gelidiella acerosa, Sargassum sp., Turbinaria sp. and Ulva lactuca) and 3 macroalgae (Boergesenia forbesii, Halymenia maculata and Palisada concreta ) did not possess the activity. Macroalgae which were tested for microbial activity, generally had antimicrobial against C. albicans and Shigella sonnei except E. coli. Results of TLC indicated that all of macroalgal had active compounds: terpenoid, glucose, flavonoids, phenols and amino acids but only few of them contained saponin, based on GC-MS test, Acrocystis nana, Zanardini was found to contain 1-Octadecyne (17.78%), Octadecanal (17, 83%) Dicholesteryl succinate (37.53%) and Cholestan-3-one, 4-methyl (26.86%) had the potential to be antimicrobial and antioxidant as well as bioenergy sources. Key words : Macroalga, High-Troughput Screening,  metabolites profiling
