Abstract

The study aims to describe the violations by the students of the 2014 initiation at UMS and identify their solutions by the activity coordinators and line coordinators. The primary data included the verbal abuse by the coordinators, committees, and students’ responses to the 2014 Academic Program Activity of Teacher and Training Education Faculty - UMS. The secondary data included the non-verbal (physical) abuse obtained from observation and interview. The data were collected through observation, inter-view and written documentation which include the results of the verbal and non-verbal strictness observation, summary of the initiation program and its regulation, and photos. The data validity used was data and data source triangulation. The data were analyzed using case study technique. The results of the study showed that there were some violations by the students during the initiation program as follows: (1) smoking a cigarette, (2) wearing a short skirt for the female, (3) wearing a transparent and tight cloth for the female, (4) not wearing a complete attribute, (5) speaking unethically or using four lette-words, (6) having a long hair beyond the ears, and (7) coming late. The solutions to the violations seemed that the line coordinators tended to permit them and they did not give any punishment so that the students kept on behaving badly. Some students thought that the team of the line coordinators were linient, particularly in giving punishment to the students who violated the regulations of the initiation program.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the Indonesian language learning in class XI IPA Madrasah Aliyah Negeri Karanganyar, especially related to: (1) Quality of learning of Indonesian in terms of school environment, (2) the quality of learning inputs, namely student motivation, teacher competence, learning programs, and infrastructure, (3) the quality of the learning process, namely: teacher’s roles in the classroom, students’roles and learning activities and learning environmnet, and (4) the students’ learning outcome. The type of research is evaluation model using a quanlitative and quantitative approaches. Evaluation model used is the model CIPP (context, input, process, product). Data collection is carried out through questionnaires, interviews, observation and documenta tion. The data analysis technique used is the evaluative analysis conducted qualitatively and quantitatively. The results showed as follows: (1) Learning environment is conducive for learning process (stated by 96.4% of students); (2) students’motivation in learning is good (stated by 96.7% of students) although teachers lack in classroom management skills; (3) The teachers role and activities are good (stated by 84.9% of students); students’ activities in classroom are goog (stated by 90.6% of students); (4) school environment is condusive for learning (stated by 95.6 % of students); and (5) the academic achievement of students is good (meased through the average score of the second semester of academic year 2012/201).

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe: (1) students’ perception of the essential meaning of the word tolerance on religious life and (2) students’ perception of  the contextual meaning of the word tolerance in religious life. The subjects were high school students Muhammmadiyah 1 and  2 Surakarta, total number of students,  97. Data were collected with an open questionnaire and interviews and analyzed with interactive analysis. The results showed that (1) threre were thirteen variations of students’ perception of the essential meaning of the word tolerance in religious life, (2) there were nine students’ perception of the contextual meaning of religious tolerance. Most of the thirteen perceptions were substantially similar to those of the KBBI (2007), however, having shorter and different wordings. The perception that semantically the same substance is dealing with respect other religions, while those with different wordings but semantically the same are not to insult, criticize, or make fun of other people of different religions, to know and understand other religious life, no discrimination to others, a sense of mutual need between one individual to another individual, tolerant of others, caring for others, respect other religions, maintaining good relations between people, not overbearing, giving opportunity to others, living in harmony, and mutual assistance in the community. The perception of the meaning of the word tolerance varies contextually as the following: having exactly the same wordings, having different wordings but semanti cally the same, and having different contextual meanings.

Abstract

In communication, sometimes people hear the unrelated utterances between speaker and hearer but the conversation is usually still continued that way. In this way, the pragmatic role is needed. However, in many cases the use of pragmatic might fail for many reasons: cross-culture understanding, or violating the politeness. This case happens not only in real conversation but also the classroom. This article is aimed to analyze the pragmatic failure in listening class of EFL. The discussion starts from the definition of Pragmatics and the speech act, Pragmatic failure and listening skill. It will be followed by the analysis of the pragmatic failure some conversations in listening class of EFL class. This study shows that there are at least five conversations which contain amount of pragmatic failure. The failure produced by the learners is categorized as pragmalinguistic failure related to Tho mas (1983) statement that pragmalinguistic failure related to different branches in linguistics, especially the relation between pragmatics and grammatical forms.

Abstract

This research is aimed at investigating the correlation between selfefficacy and authoritarian parenting style toward student s’ academic procrastination. The subject of this research is 150 students of faculty of of Psychology, Medicine, and Economy of Sultan Agung Islamic University who are working on the final project. The major  hypothesis proposed in the research is that there is a correlation between self-efficacy and authoritarian parenting style with students’ academic procrastination. The minor hypotheses are as follows: (1) there is a negative correlation between self-efficacy with academic procrastination; and (2) there is a positive correlation between authoritarian parenting style with academic procrastination. This research used three of scale for the data collection namely academic procrastination scale, self-efficacy scale and authoritarian parenting stale scale. The statistic analysis used in the research is regression to test major hypothesis and the parsial analysis to test minor hypothesis. The research results show that (1) there is correlation between self-efficacy and authoritarian pareting style with students’ academic procrastination; (2) there is a significant negative correla tion between self-efficacy with academic procrastination toward college students; and (3) there is a significant positive correlation between authoritarian parenting style with academic procrastination toward college sudents.

Abstract

English language teaching in Indonesia which is text-oriented concerns with text type or genre. The teaching is based on the concept that language is a system of choice by which writers can communicate certain functions allowing them to express their experiences, to  interact with others, and to create coherent message. Consequently, systemic functional grammar which views language as a strategic, meaning-making resource is implemented. However, the facts show students of English Department have limited knowledge on it. Their average score of the examination is unsatisfactory, below 70. The objectives of the research are to describe (1) the students’ mastery on interpersonal metafunction, experiential metafunction, and textual metafunction; and (2) to describe the classroom implementation systemic functional grammar course.This is a naturalistic study conducted at English Department. The subjects of this research are one lecturer and 30 students taking structure 3 course. Data are collected from teaching-learn- ing activities and relevant documents. The result indicates that students’ mastery of systemic functional grammar is low. They get confused when they come across with complex clauses in spoken text.

Abstract

This study examines three issues, namely: (1) the structure of the Mantra Pejinak Ular (MPU), (2) the meaning of religiosity of the novel based on semiotic perspective, and (3) the pedagogical implication of finding as literary materials in Junior High School. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The result of analysis indicates as follows: (1) there is a close relationship between the building elements of the novel; (2) the religiosity aspects in this novel includes the understanding of the main truth of oneself, thankful to Allah, the religious practice (worship) followed by good deeds, changing oneself, asking others to concern truth, defending the truth, awareness for the charity, art work recalling God, the belief of the Javanese society, and the existence of salvation events.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify the relationship between the emotional intelligence and problem focus coping with delinquent behaviour of Junior High School students. The major hypothesis proposed is “There is relationship between emotional intelligence and problem focus coping with delinquent behaviour on Junior High School students”. The minor  hypotheses are as follows: (a) there is negative relationship between intelligence emotional with delinquent behaviour on  Junior High School students; (b) there is negative relationship between problem focus coping with delinquent behaviour on Junior High school students. The subjects of this research are students of  Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta Junior High School grade VIIIA, VIIID, and VIIIE, consisting of  98 students. Data sampling used is cluster random sampling ada data collect ing technique used is emotional intelligence scale and problem focus coping and delinquent behaviour scale. Data analysis techniques uses is regression analysis. The result indicates taht there is negative relationship between emotional intelligence and problem focus coping with delinquent behaviour on Junior High School students. The effective contribution of emotional intelligence toward delinquent behaviour is 12%. The effecttive contribution of  problem focus coping toward delinquent behaviour is  9%. The emotional intelligence on research subject is moderate; likewise the variable of problem focus coping dan delinquent behaviour is moderate as well.
