Abstract

Habiburrahman El Shirazy is a novelist who can captivate the public through his work entitled “Ayat-Ayat Cinta”. This novel was written based the social environment and the characters behave as if in everyday real life. Most of the stories of this novel was based on Islamic perspective but universal since its setting was in Islamic state, Cairo Egypy. Purpose of this paper was to describe (1) the positive perilaku of the characters such as Fahri, Maria, and Aisah based on sosiological approach; (2) to describe the negative perilaku of Noura Bahadur based on the sociological approach. The method used was descriptive qualitative, a method that systematically describe the facts about the positive and negative perilaku of the characters. The approach used was memesis sociology and pragmatic sociology. The results showed that the positive perilakus of Fahri, Maria, and Aisha. Fahri was wise, kind, helpful, obedient worshiper, and posi tive. Maria was a respectful, helpful, and kind. Aisha was helpful, honest, kind, and considerate. Negative perilaku was shown in figures such as Noura and Bahadur. Bahadur has was a rapists with nasty character while Noura liked was gossipping and haerdharted.

Abstract

This study focused on comparison of learner’s attitude and strategies in learning En- glish between the high and low achievers. The qualitative descriptive analytic method is implemented in this study. The 10 ninth graders of MTs Darul Ulum Bandungharjo were chosen as the subject of the study and questionnaires are used as the research instru- ment. The study found that the high and low achievement students had positive atti- tudes towards community, people who speak English, and English in general. However, there was differences between high and low achiever’s attitudes towards English. The high-achievement students argued that they prefered English than other subjects. On the other hand, the low-achievement students disagreed with the statement. This condi- tion showed that attitude was personal. Morever, the strategies were differ from the high and low achievement student. The study found that the high-achievement students used cognitive and metacognitive strategies to improve their ability in English. How- ever, the low-achievement students used only some of cognitive strategies in learning English. As a summary, cognitive and metacognitive strategies accompanied by posi- tive attitude and motivation influenced the learners’ achievements of English skills.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate strategies and politeness in rejection of the invitation, offer, and suggestions by English teacher in Madison County. This study uses the theoretical framework of Takahashi , Beebe and Uliss - Weltz. Data was collected using Mechanical Completion of Discourse (Discourse Completion Technique). The data source is the 38 English teachers, 14 men and 24 women who teach in junior high schools in Madison County. The results showed as follows: (1) The English teacher at junior high school in Madison County implemented two semantic formula of direct and indirect strategies in three acts of rejection (invitations, offers and suggestions). (2) Indirect strategy in the rejection of the dominant is the supply and advice directly while the dominant strategy used in the rejection of the invitation.

Abstract

This study explored college students’strategies in learning English language. Two questions were presented. The first question is what strategies are used by the students in learning English language and the second question is how do the students use strategies in learning English language. To answer the first question, 49 college students gave respond on Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire. Then, to answer the last question, five students participated in Think Aloud Protocol (TAP) sessions. The data analysis from SILL questionnaire showed that the students were medium user of strategies in learning English language. The strategies then ranked from social strategies, followed by metacognitive, cognitive, affective, compensation, and memory strategies at the latter posi- tion. Then, to find out how the students use strategies in learning English language, think aloud protocol (TAP) sessions presented that the students made use of three major strategies in learning English language cognitive strategies, metacognitive strategies, and compensation strategies. These three strategies were used by the students in three different activities (understanding reading passage, dealing with unfamiliar words or phrases and self-awareness) as the study was limited to reading skills. In conclusion, the students made use of different strategies when doing particular task given to them. At this point, students in some ways have the ability to learn by themselves, that is by using strategies as lecturers cannot always facilitate students’ learning, especially when lecturers teach large classes.

Abstract

The purposes of  this research are to describe the types and references of  the deitic words used in the Jakarta Post editorial. The central topics of pragmatics, this study is limited on applying deixis on the Jakarta Post for July 2012 editorial. Method of data collection that is used by researcher is documentation method. There are five types of the deitic words. The first is personal diexis which includes the followings: (1) the first person I refers to a speaker inclusion (+S) and speaker exclusion (S). We refers to an including the speaker but excluding the hearer (s) (+S, A) (Expressive use), include both speaker or writer and hearer (s) or reader(s) (+S,+A) (Integrative use) and an in cluding the speaker, listeners and some assuming hearer (s) or reader (s) (+S,(assuming) + A) (assuming use); (2) The second person, You refers to addressee inclusion (+A) and exclusion (A); (3) The third person, speaker and addressee exclusion (S,A). He or she refers to male or female person, unknown gender and a male or female person’s occupation. They refers to an indefinite (singular) person, group of people or things and non persons. The second type is temporal deixis which can be categorized into the follow ings: (1) time relation (pre, present, post events), (2) time period (calendrical and non caldrical), and (3) the moment of utterance (coding and receiving time). The third type is spatial Deixis which includes proximal expression (here) and distal expressions (there). The forth type is discourse dexis which includes this and that, refering to large amount of the discourse that are located in the discourse itself. The fifth type is social deixis. The relational variety is the most important deixis which involes four axes as speaker and referent e.g. referent honorifics, speaker and addressee, addressee honorifics, speaker and  bystander. There are  two references of the deitic words are used. They are referential devices that can create cohesion (anaphoric, cataphoric, and exophoric) and type of references (reference personal, demonstrative and comparative).

Abstract

This study deals with the relationships of social support and self confidence with the English language achievement of eight grade students of State Junior High School 6 Boyolali. The purpose of this study was to determine (1) the relationship of social sup- port and confidence with the English language student achievement; (2) the relation- ship of social support to the achievement of English language students, and (3) the relationship of confidence with the English language student achievement. The popula- tion of this study was all eighth grade students of State Junior High School 6 Boyolali, amounting to 201 students and the number of samples were 132 students taken by proportional random sampling technique. This study uses the method of documentation and questionnaire as data collection technique, while the technique of data analysis in this study was the Pearson correlation and multiple linear. The results showed as fol- lows: (1) there is a relationship of social support and self confidence with the English language student achievement (F-test = 222.948); (2) there is a relationship of social support to the students’ English achievement (r = 0.445 with p<0.05); (3) there is a relationship of self confidence with the English language student achievement (r = 0.445 with p<0.05).

Abstract

This study deals with the violation of cooperative politeness principle of cartoon discourse found in Politik Santun Dalam Kartun by Misrad. The objectives of the study are as follows: (1) to identify the violation of cooperative principle; (2) to describe the violation of politeness principle; and (3) to describe the pedagogical implication in learning Indonesian language at vocational high school. This is a qualitative research. The data in the form of words, sentences, and discourse both monologues and dialogues containing violation of cooperative and politeness principle. Technique of collecting data used is documentation and technique of data analysis used is comparison and contrast technique. The results are as follows: (1) there are three types of violation of cooperative principles, namely: maxim of quantity, relevance, and manner. The violation of quantity maxim is dominant; (2) the violation of politeness principle covers six types, namely: tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympath maxim.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between learning motivation and English achievement of students of Mechanical Engineering at Politeknik Negeri Semarang, Central Java. The subjects of this study were 147 students aged seventeen to twenty one years old. The data were collected using questionnaire and analyzed using the Statistic Package for Social Science. The result indicate that the students’ motiva- tion in learning English was at moderate level. They were most motivated in learning situation, intrinsic interest, going abroad, immediate achievement, social responsibility, individual development, and the students were least motivated in information medium. There was no significant relationship between students’ learning motivation types and their English achievements as a whole. However, there is no significant positive correlations among immediate achievement, learning situation and students’ outcomes were indicated. In general, Politeknik Negeri Semarang students had low motivation in their English course but they still had good achievements. It was seen from the negative correlation between the two variables. In other words, the learning motivation does not influence their achievements.
