Abstract

Introduction: Work fatigue or fatigue is a kind of body prevention from further damages. The fatigue experienced by a worker resulted in a decrease in work performance and lack of body endurance during the work. The workers of steel smelting companies are one of the examples of workers who potentially experience work fatigue. This research aims to ascertain both the internal and external factors of work fatigue experienced by the workers at Sidoarjo steel smelting company. Methods: This research was conducted at Sidoarjo steel smelting company in May 2018 with a population of 30 people. The internal factors in this research are the age, years of service, and nutritional status of the workers. Meanwhile, the external factors are the physical workload, work climate, and noise. This research is descriptive research with observation as the data collection method and is cross-sectional research design. The sample is calculated by applying the total population sampling technique. The data is presented descriptively in the form of frequency, percentage, and cross-tabulation among variables distributions. Result: It is revealed that the majority of the workers, as many as 17 people, undergo mild work fatigue (56.7%). The results of the cross-tabulation show that moderate and severe fatigues are mostly experienced by the workers with these criteria: younger, shorter years of service, obese, fair physical workload, and work climate and noise that exceed the Threshold Limit Value (TLV). Conclusion: It is affirmed that both the internal and external factors are related to work fatigue. Keywords: external factors, internal factors, steel smelting, work fatigue

Abstract

Introduction: The working activities of the fishermen in Tanjung Village are still considered as traditional works providing the works are done manually with non-ergonomic working postures, such as bending, standing, squatting, and legs bending. Accordingly, these postures trigger the complaints of musculoskeletal diseases (MSDs). Musculoskeletal diseases are diseases in the skeletal muscles, for example, pains, aches, pins and needles, and heat. Working as a fisherman means that one dedicates half of her/his time to catch fish mostly by using traditional boats and equipment. Thus, a lot of fishermen are discovered complaining about pains after completing their work. This research aims to distinguish the relationship among variables. Methods: This research is observational research that applies the cross-sectional design. The research samples as many as 56 fishermen are chosen by implementing the cluster random sampling technique. The data are obtained by completing measurements, interview, and observation by applying the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) method and by distributing the Nordic Body Map (NBM) questionnaires. Results: As many as 73.2% of the fishermen have a high risk of musculoskeletal diseases and 46.4% have been working in high-risk working postures. Conclusion: The working postures have a weak relationship (r=0.407) with the complaints of musculoskeletal diseases. Keywords: fishermen, complaints of musculoskeletal diseases, Nordic Body Map, Rapid Entire Body Assessment

Abstract

Introduction: Every worker is exposed to the risk of occupational accidents or occupational diseases when working. Awkward working postures are the postures that cause body parts to detach from its natural postures that can result in the complaints of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). This research intends to analyze the factors related to the complaints of MSDs suffered by the shelving staff in the library and reading room in Universitas Airlangga Surabaya. Methods: This research is observational research that applies a cross-sectional design. The sample of this research consists of 27 people chosen by the total population method. The data regarding the individual characteristics and the complaints of MSDs are obtained through interview and filling out a questionnaire that has been standardized. The data on working postures are analyzed by referring to the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) method, while the data on the complaints of MSDs are scrutinized by implementing the Nordic Body Map (NBM) method. Results: Reveal that most of the shelving staff experience very high-risk level of MSDs (40.7%). Other than that, it is noticed that the working postures consist of squatting (high-risk level), bowing (high-risk level), standing (moderate-risk level), standing with arms stretching (very high-risk level), and standing with arms stretching while tiptoeing (very high-risk level). The collected data is analyzed by using the Spearman correlation test. Conclusion: It can be stated that the strongest factor causing the occurrence of MSDs is the years of service (r=0.803) with a positive relationship, which means that the longer the years of service is, the higher the risk to experience MSDs is. Keywords: complaints of musculoskeletal disorders, individual factors, shelving staff
