Abstract

This article discusses the reason of wearing veil among Indonesian Students in public schools. It is found that that veil in public schools has three different elements. First of all, veil is identified as the religious awareness among the students. It symbolizes the religious commitment and the strength of local values. The proliferation of veiled women indicated the Islamic movement in Indonesia. Secondly, veil may be identified as the medium of maintaining political interest. The policy of making veil compulsory for students and as school uniform can ignore the pluralism in Indonesia. This policy also leads to make veil as a symbolic than substantive teaching. Finally, veil in public schools should be considered as the social control for the female students in the public sphere. It does not merely focus on the symbolic sphere but it extends to develop the achievement of students

Abstract

In the southern border provinces of Thailand, especially Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat, there are two religious group of people, Thai Muslims and Buddhists. They live together, the state and Thai Muslims for a long time. The lack of knowledge in relation to understanding Muslims traditionally religious way of life, Muslims were forced directly or indirectly to act as Thai Buddhists by Thai government. This is one of the biggest conundrum Thai government should address and find an amicable solution urgently. Additionally, it is essential to be noted that historical perspectives of Pattani state is completely different from both side, this can lead to potentially political conflict in this area. Therefore, the government should rewrite a new paradigm by cooperating with all groups of people involve this conflict. If the majority of people could accept the recognition of difference, eventually this will result in peaceful coexistence.

Abstract

the pesantren has been one of the important educational institutions in Indonesia. As an education institution, the curriculum of pesantrens seems to reflect the style and will of the kyai who leads the pesantren, reflect his interpretations of both Islamic traditions, and the changes happening in his society. A pesantren is an indigenous education institution in Indonesia concerned with conducting Islamic education. Kitab kuning teaching is the typical curriculum of pesantren that is applied in the pesantren education system. Some pesantrens still strictly use kitab kuning as their whole curriculum, whereas some others include other curricula into their overall curriculum. Due to globalization and modernity, pesantren - as one of the education system in Indonesia- tries to integrate their curriculum into the national curriculum.

Abstract

To Muslim societies, especially of those inclining to sufism, Tareqah Naqsyabandiyah is particularly outstanding. This is mainly due to the wide spread and broad influence of the Tareqah teachings in different parts of the world. In Indonesia, the influence of Tareqah Naqsyabandiyah teachings is scattered in almost all areas of the country, including in South Sulawesi. For the people of South Sulawesi, the position of Tareqah Naqsyabandiyah is highly essential as it is closely related to the greatest scholar of the region, Shaykh Yusuf al-Makassari, who is believed to be the first to introduce Tareqah Naqsyabandiyah in Indonesia. This paper examines methods developed to obtain fundamental values in Tareqah Naqsyabandiyah. More specifically, it will also examine the Tareqah teachings practiced by the people of South Sulawesi. The exploration flows from the historical aspect to elaborate the role of Murshid and the practical benefits affecting the social life in South Sulawesi, especially with regards to worship and muamalah.

Abstract

there are many debates among Islamic scholars the exact date and people who bring Islam to Indonesia. This debate happened because there is no valid data to reconstruct the date of coming of Islam. On other side, the meaning of “Islam” differs between one scholar and others, for example; some scholars define it in formal definition as a person who converted Islam. Meanwhile, some of them defined it in sociology term as Islam community or society. There are four opinions about the people who came to introduce Islam to Indonesia. One of them assumed that Islam was brought by India people, the second one from Arab, the third one from Persia, and the last one who thought that Islam came from China.

Abstract

This article deals with hadis perspective on Indonesian muslim women voices of domestic violence. It is found that domestic violence do happen in Indonesia. A number of factors contributing to domestic violence are challenging men’s power and authority which include advising men to adhere to religious and cultural values and norms such as abstaining from alcohol, not having affairs, seeking employment, responding to a man’s anger or accusation during an argument. Women’s attempt to guide men or to negotiate with them seem to undermine men and threaten their designated position in the family ascribed by society. Other factors are infidelity in marriage and polygamy, gender division of labour, financial issues and alcohol. Domestic violence is not justifiable even in the Qur’an.

Abstract

Following the fall of the New Order regime in 1998, Indonesia commenced reformation to its government system from the authoritarian centralist system of Suharto’s New Order toward a democratic decentralized system. As a result, many local governments have used these new powers to locally introduce Sharia-based regulations known as Perda Shariah. However, pros and cons have emerged due to the enactment of such Shariah-based regulations. One of the controversial and discriminating point in the implementation of Sharia-based regulation is the regulation on Islamic dress code that requires Muslim women to wear veils. The report from National Commission on Violence Against Women (2010, p.III), for example, has identified around 21 policies concerning the Islamic dress code. For this reason, I will argue that Sharia-based regulations on Moslem dress code have negative impacts on women and minority groups. This essay will then be structured into two sections. The first is the explanation of the Sharia- based regulation on Moslem dress code. The second part is the analysis of the impact of these regulations on women.
