Abstract

The purpose of this study was to measure the levels of estrogen and the onset of estrous after administration of Buserelin on bali cattle experiencing anestrous postpartum due to ovarian hypofunction. This research used twenty seven bali cattles which were divided evenly into three groups of treatment, namely group-one as control group (P0, without treatment), group-two, receiving a single injection of Buserelin at dose of 0.02 mg (P1) and group three, receiving repeated injection of Buserelin at dose of 0.02 mg at 24 hours interval (P3). Serum estrogen levels were measured at a time off before estrous, a time of estrous, and five days after the onset of estrous using ELISA method. Data were analyzed using statistical analysis of variance and a Duncan?s Multiple Range Test for a further analysis. The results showed that at the stage of estrous, the estrogen level of P0 was lower significantly (p<0.05) than two others treatments (P1 and P2), but those of P1 and P2 were statistically the same (p>0.05). The onset of estrous on P2 was shorter than those of P1 (p<0.05). It can be concluded that the administration of Buserelin can trigger an estrous on Bali cattle that experiencing anestrous postpartum due to ovarian hypofunction and repeated administrations of Buserelin can shorten the onset of estrous.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of leptospirosis in Kintamani dogs in Bali. Bloodsamples were collected from 55 Kintamani dogs. The sera examination was conducted in the VeterinaryResearch Centre, Bogor. Microscopic Agglutination Test was performed to detect the presence ofantibodies against 14 leptospira antigens. The results showed that the prevalence of leptospirosis inKintamani dogs in Bali was 18.18% (10/55). Two out of 10 positive sera samples (3.64%) reacted withthree serovar; 5 (9.09%) reacted with two serovar; and 3 (3.64%) reacted with one serovar. There were fourtypes of serovars detected in this study, namely: Leptospira interrorgans serovar Celledoni, Leptospirainterrorgans serovar Canicola, Leptospira interrorgans serovar Cynopteri dan Leptospira interrorgansserovar Ichterohemorrhagiae. The research found that Leptospira interrorgans serovar Cellodini was verycommon in Kintamani dog.

Abstract

The cases of canine transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) in Kintamani Bali Dog were studied by evaluating the cases in clinical records from some veterinary clinics in the two regencies of Badung, Gianyar and Denpasar City. A total of 486 clinical records on Kintamani Bali Dogs gathered from 2010 to 2014 was used in this study. Among those, the specific cases on TVT diagnostic were observed. The study showed that the prevalence of TVT was catagorised low. Three of Kintamani Bali Dogs were diagnosed  to have TVT (0.62%). Canine transmissible venereal tumor affected both male and female dogs. The tumor cases were recorded in varied ages,  from 2 to 5 years. This result indicates that TVT in Kintamani Bali Dogs is likely to be associated with the dog?s sexual maturity.

Abstract

Fluorescent Antibody Test (FAT) is a golden standard for rabies diagnosis, but it requires many sample preconditions before testing. Immunohistochemical technique (IHC) has the same principle as the FAT, however, it is more simple. This study was conducted to examine the sensitivity and specificity of IHC compare to FAT. The sensitivity and specificity were calculated using the formula of 2 x 2 contingency table and statistical analysis of the chi-square. Out of 40 samples that rabies positive on FAT, 27 samples (67.5%) showed rabies positive on IHC and 13 samples (32.5%) showed rabies negative on IHC. All samples that rabies negative on FAT were also rabies negative on IHC. The IHC has the sensitivity and specificity level 67.5% and 100% respectively. The IHC has a lower sensitivity than FAT, however, IHC has many advantages such as it can be performed on formalin fixed-samples. A further research is necessary to improve the sensitivity of IHC on detecting the rabies.

Abstract

Bali province has been declared as rabies endemic area. Bali government has already implemented several efforts to control rabies, but it does not have any significant impact to make Bali free from the disease. This condition is not caused by limited resources only, but also by factors of socio-demographic dog?s ownership. This observational study using cross sectional design has been done to determine the public's knowledge and dog?s ownership related factors in Karangasem Regency. Nine villages were selected based on the positive rabies cases, which was formerly confirmed by laboratory tests. The Villages were divided into three category based on the socio-economic and culture, namely urban, sub urban and rural area. Data were analyzed descriptively and by multivariate logistic regression analysis. The results showed that from the 408 households, 252 respondents (61.8%) reported having the dogs. The percentage of dog ownership in urban, sub urban and rural is 17.6%, 9.8% and 34.3% respectively. It can be suggested that the rural area should be a priority in controlling rabies in Karangasem Regency.

Abstract

Pig ascariasis is an intestinal parasitic disease caused by Ascaris suum. The economic losses in pig ascariasis are caused by a bad feed conversion ratio (FCR) and rejection of some organs after animal slaughtering. An anthelmintic utilization and farm management improvement are the common prevention action, however, recently the utilization of herbs as an athelmintic has been developed, one of them is Moringa oleifera leaves. Moringa oleifera leaves are also a potential for a sources of animal food because of their high nutrients. This intervention research aimed to examine the anthelmintic effect of Moringa oleifera leaves and its potency as feed supplement. Experimental design used was ccompletely randomized design split time (CRD Split Time) with six treatments namely Moringa oleifera 5% and an infection of infective larvae of A. suum (1), Moringa oleifera 5% (2), positive control (3), Moringa oleifera 10% (4), Moringa oleifera 10% and infection of infective larvae of A. suum (5), and no treatment as negative control (6). Each treatment was imposed on four female landrace piglets aged 8 weeks and weighed around 11 kg. The results showed that Moringa oleifera 5% and 10% of the feed could inhibit the egg production of A.suum and had a significant effect (P
