Abstract

Kepuh (Sterculia foetida L.) is non-food plant produces seed oil that can be used as  a biodiesel feedstock. This study aims to determine the characteristics of seeds, oil content, kinship relationship and quality of biodiesel from Sterculia foetidas seed in Badung, Denpasar and Rote. The research was conducted on December 2016 - May 2017. The method used was observation of seed characteristics, analyzing oil content and biodiesel quality from oil Sterculia foetida?s. The highest oil content was obtained from Badung regency and Denpasar  that was Monang-Maning 1 =  41.13%, while the lowest of Rote in Oemasi was 14.80%. The kinship relationship between seed characteristics and oil content formed 2 groups with a similarity index of 93.5%. The quality of biodiesel in Badung and Denpasar with  acid number of 0.34 mg-KOH/ g and Rote that was 0.44 mg-KOH/g, iodine number in Badung and Denpasar were 44.41 and Rote was 48.53. Saponification number in Badung and Denpasar were 187.93 and Rote was 194.94, cetane number in Badung and Denpasar were 64.02 and Rote was 61,92. Water content in Badung, Denpasar and Rote was 0,2 respectively, and viscosity in Badung and Denpasar were 12.23 cSt and Rote  was 9.22 cSt. The quality of biodiesel obtained mostly fulfilled the provisions of SNI 2015, except viscosity.

Abstract

Goats are animals which are consumed by the community in the city of Padang. Goat population growth is not comparable with the numbers growing demand, it is because generally these goats reared traditionally small-scale ownership so that less maintenance and can cause goat easily attacked by the parasite. Purpose of this study are to identify of endoparasite that infected goats in Padang city and to determine the prevalence infection of each parasite. This study was conducted from April to May 2016 at five location in Padang city and continued in Animal Taxonomy Laboratory, Biology Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science, Andalas University. Faecal samples were collected from 25 goats. Faecal samples were examined using centrifugation-flotation methods. The results showed that two species endoparasites were found, those are Trichostrongylus sp. (prevalence value 64%) and one species Unidentified (sp. 1) from family Taeniidae (prevalence value 16%).

Abstract

Lamtoro merupakan salah satu tanaman yang memiliki kandungan protein yang cukup tinggi yaitu berkisar antara 25-35%. Namun, pemanfaatan lamtoro menjadi terbatas karena mengandung zat antinutrisi seperti mimosin. Kandungan mimosin dapat diturunkan melalui beberapa metode salah satunya adalah melalui perendaman dalam air. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh dari pemberian tepung daun lamoro hasil perendaman (TDLP) terhadap histologi testis tikus jantan. Rancangan percobaan yang digunakan adalah Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) yang terdiri dari empat kelompok dengan masing-masing delapan ulangan. Perlakuan berupa pemberian tepung daun lamtoro hasil perendaman yang dicampur dengan pelet komersial dengan aras 100% pakan komersial (tanpa TDLP) sebagai kontrol (P0), 92,5% pakan komersial + 7,5% TDLP sebagai perlakuan 1 (P1), 85% pakan komersial + 15% TDLP sebagai perlakuan 2 (P2) dan 77,5% pakan komersial + 22,5% TDLP sebagai perlakuan 3 (P3). Perlakuan diberikan pada tikus jantan selama 30 hari. Variabel yang diamati pada penelitian ini adalah jumlah sel spermatogenik. Data hasil penelitian diolah menggunakan program statistik komputer (SPSS 16.0 for Windows) dengan menggunakan uji One Way Anova. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penambahan TDLP dalam ransum tidak berpengaruh nyata (P>0,05) terhadap jumlah sel spermatogenik. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa penambahan TDLP hingga aras 22,5% tidak menurunkan jumlah sel spermatogenik.

Abstract

The aimed of this study was to determine the effect of feed containing various concentrations of Calliandra calothyrsus Meissn. leaf meal mixed with pineapple peels and concentrate feed on histopathology and the activity of liver of local rabbit (Lepus sp). This study used a Post-Test Only Control Group Design, using 24 local male rabbits divided into 4 groups of feed treatment namely P0 = concentrate feed as control; P1 = mixture of 15% of calliandra leaf meal (CLM), 30% of pineapple peels (PP) and 55% of commercial feed (CF); P2 = 30% of CLM, 30% of PP and 40% of CF; and P3 = 45% of CLM, 30% of PP and 25% of CF). The treatments were given for 60 days and used 6 replicates for each group. The data were analyzed statistically by SPSS program version 22. The research results showed the increase of calliandra leaf meal levels in concentrated feed which were added 30% of pineapple peels still caused liver damage namely fatty degeneration, necrosis and congestion. It increased the ALT level, but did not affect the AST level in local rabbit serum.

Abstract

The main objective of research was to investigate the effectiveness of Schleichera oleosa (Lour) Oken crude extract to inhibit the in vitro growth of E. coli. The crude extract of the plant and the E. coli used in this study were obtained by applying the method of maceration in methanol solution and the method of dilution and spread plate on nutrient agar (NA) medium, respectively. The in vitro bioassay of the extract on E. coli was conducted by applying the method of diffusion on NA medium. The results showed that the crude extract of Schleichera oleosa (Lour) Oken was found to be effective to inhibit the growth of E. coli in the in vitro tests. The diameter of inhibition zone was proportional with the extract concentration exposed to the E. coli.

Abstract

Experiment has been done on the effect of heat exposure on the percentage of dead sperm and pyriform cell in male NZW rabbit. The bucks were exposed to 34°C for 8 hours on either 1 or 5 days. It was found that scrotal temperature (ScT) increased very rapidly during the first hour of exposure by 4°C in group 1 (1x8h). In group 2 (5x8h of exposure) ScT differed significantly between days (P < 0.05). The bigest response was on day 1 (36.6°C) and followed a progressive reduction, day by day, in an apparent acclimation pattern. At different times of exposure, ScT was observed to rise rapidly during the first hour (by 14 percent or 4.4°C). In the 1x8h treatment dead sperm achieved a maximum level of 14.5 ± 4.7 percent in the first week after hotroom treatment. In week 2, the percentage dead sperm started to decline. When rabbits were exposed to 5x8h, this group was more severely affected than the 1x8h. In week 1, the percentage dead sperm in the 5x8h group was 2.1 fold greater than in the 1x8h group (31.0 vs 14.5 percent). Recovery in the 5x8h group took longer than in the 1x8h group, and the percentage dead sperm finally returned to normal levels only after 7 weeks, compared to 5 weeks after 1x8h treatment.Between weeks, the incidence of pyriforms did differ significantly (P < 0.05). In the 1x8h treatment, the percentage pyriforms increased in the first week after hotroom exposure by 3.8 percent. In week 2, the percentage pyriform started to decline and continued to do so gradually until week 6. In the 5x8h treatment, the number of pyriforms was higher than it was in 1x8h treatment. In week 1, for example, the percentage pyriform was 16 percent higher than in 1x8h treatment group. Hence, the mean pyriform cell count was 1.6 times higher in the 5x8h compared to the 1x8h group.

Abstract

Lily (L. longiflorum) is one of 280 genus of liliaceae family. Variation on flower colour, growth habit, flowering period (shelf life) is very limited in Indonesia, so that plant breeding techniques are required to obtain a wide variety of plants. Physical mutation, radiation with X rays were employed in this study. The aim of this study is to find out the effect of X-ray exposure on lily?s leaves stomata anatomy. Lily seeds were grown in vitro and seedlings were exposed to X ray. This study employ CRD (completely randomized design) with four dose exposure (0 krad, 5 krad, 7,5 krad dan 10 krad) and 10 replicates each dose. Results show that to X ray causing reduction in stomata?s length, stomata amount, index, density of stomata that occurs randomly, compared to control.

Abstract

Kapok (Ceiba pentandra Gaertn.) is one of the plants which has many benefits for the community. This plant is used as a retaining soil from erosion, plant shade, mattress filler material and animal feed. Kapok seed is currently being developed as a herbal contraceptive medicine. The aim of this research is to determine the activity of kapok seed extracts (Ceiba pentandra Gaertn.) on the mating behavior of male rats(Rattus norvegicus).The design used was completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 groups and 8 replications were P0 (distilled water and tween 80), P1 (0,07 mg/kg body weight kapok seed extract), P2 (0,12 mg/kg body weight kapok seed extract), P3 (0,24 mg/kg body weight kapok seed extract). Kapok seed extract treatment is done every day for 33 days, whereas  mating behavior was observed once in 3 days. The parameters observed to assess their mating behavior were the quantity of kissing the vagina, mounting and intromission. The results showed that the kapok seed extract significantly provide a real impact on the mating behavior of male rats which is indicated by a decrease quantity of the kissing vagina, the quantity of mounting andthe quantity of intromission of male rats treated group.

Abstract

Salmonella typhi is a Gram-negative intracellular bacterium and causes typhoid fever in humans. The success rate of Berma Vivotif Ty21a vaccine in Indonesia is only 33-66%, while in other countries have been reached up to 100%. The research was conducted in order to determine the potency of local isolate bacteria to stimulate the immune response and the impact of different exposure frequencies on the immune response and the different immune response time when administered by UV-inactivated vaccine.. The results showed that the antibody titer of local isolates irradiated by UV light 10x was 88.76 ± 33.06 IU/mL at week 4 with the lowest antibody titer values about 11.15 ± 9.18 IU/mL was found in the negative control.

Abstract

Teknologi produksi benih dan pakan abalon Haliotis squamata telah berhasil dikembangankan oleh Balai Besar Penelitian dan Pengembangan Budidaya Laut, Gondol, sedangkan pakan untuk pendederan juvenil abalon masih memerlukan pengembangan lebih lanjut untuk memperoleh bahan pakan yang optimum untuk pertumbuhan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh pemberian pakan beberapa jenis alga makro segar (Ulva sp., Gracilaria sp., Halymenia sp.) yang diberikan dalam komposisi tunggal ataupun kombinasi (7 komposisi) terhadap pertumbuhan juvenil abalon H. squamata. Rancangan penelitian yang digunakan yaitu menggunakan Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) 3 kali ulangan. Percobaan dilakukan dalam keranjang plastik ukuran 287 x 140 x 52 mm dengan kepadatan 25 ekor (berat badan 1,75 ± 0,08 g, panjang cangkang 21,96 ± 0,34 mm, lebar cangkang 13,37 ± 0,24 mm). Pengukuran abalon dilakukan setiap 2 minggu sekali, dan pemeliharaan abalon dilakukan selama 87 hari dengan pemberian pakan setiap 2 hari sekali. Hasil penelitian ini diketahui bahwa perlakuan dengan pemberian pakan kombinasi Ulva sp., Gracilaria sp., dan Halymenia sp. memberikan pertumbuhan yang paling baik pada berat badan (BB), panjang cangkang (PC), serta lebar cangkang (LC), berturut-turut yaitu 4.70±0.20 g, 30.61±0.44 mm, serta 18.94±0.26 mm, sedangkan perlakuan pakan Halymenia sp. yang terendah.  Nilai rasio konversi pakan (FCR) terendah yaitu pada perlakuan Ulva sp. dan Halymenia sp. 13,55±1,06, dan tertinggi yaitu pada perlakuan Gracilaria sp. 23,89±2,63.
