Abstract

The background of this research comes from the viral post of Mang Oleh’s homemade named Odading cake. Well-known uniquely reviewed by a man named Ade Londok. The controversial diction that is used by Ade Londok is very interesting, unusual, and of course, amusing. His entertaining figure with his unusual review style made this man from the city of Bandung go viral. Previously, it was well-known that Ade Londok was promoting a typical Bandung home made cake called Odading in an amusing manner. He promoted Odading with his mixed accents, between Sundanese and Indonesian. He also slips in a tickling rhyme so that it makes his figure interesting to be viral. The approach used in this research is critical discourse analysis that used a video of Ade Londok and the script of his speech as the source to collect the data. The findings show that the content used Abstract word, Special word, Popular word, and Jargon. It can be concluded as in its original, primary meaning, refers to writers’ or speakers’ distinctive vocabulary choices and style of expression.

Abstract

The aim of the study is to identify the use of parts of speech in speaking. In this study, the descriptive qualitative method was used to find and analyze types of parts of speech from the speaker’s talk. This study is based on Critical Discourse Analysis which was developed from the Systematic Functional Grammar (Halliday, 1971). In the current study, within a descriptive qualitative, critical discourse analysis approach was used. The data were taken from the TED-Talk video. The findings show that the speaker employs various types of parts of speech. Also, it can be identified that the use of modal verbs helps the speaker to be close to the audience while communicating the point of view relating to the topic. Moreover, personal pronouns may shorten the distance between the speaker and listeners on the event. Furthermore, using personal pronouns can help the speaker focus on the topic and associate the words into the real context.

Abstract

ABSTRACT In the past few decades, the discussion of what grammatical structures to teach, and how to teach them remains controversial (Ellis, 2006). This research study aimed to explore the role of inductive grammar teaching toward specific grammatical structure, i.e. the second conditional or the unreal/hypothetical conditional. In light of this, ten English teachers were involved in this study, providing beneficial feedback through their experience in English language teaching. They were given two sessions of inductive grammar teaching, and were asked to provide feedback. The results showed that inductive grammmar teaching possessed its strengths and weaknesses. One strength would be from its ability in engaging more active participation from the students. However, a notable weaknessess was in terms of its lack of opportunities in explicit grammatical explanation. How to Cite: Hidayat, D.N. (2017). Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study illustrates the imagination of corrupt politicians from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) about money through observing the metaphors they use to replace the word "money" when conducting cell phone conversations revealed in court. The discussion focuses on the metaphorical expressions of two PKS politicians, in the case of bribery by Commissioner of PT Cahaya Mas Perkasa, So Kok Seng, related to road reconstruction projects in Maluku and North Maluku in 2017. The Conceptual Metaphor theory is used to uncover the semantic fields of the metaphors they create. Thus, the corruptor's imagination can be revealed. It was found that through metaphors they think of money as a sacred object like the Holy Book.ABSTRAKStudi ini menganalisa imajinasi politisi korup dari Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS) tentang uang dengan mengamati metafora yang mereka gunakan untuk mengganti kata "uang" ketika melakukan percakapan telepon seluler yang diungkapkan di pengadilan. How to Cite: Hadiyansyah, D., Hidayat, D.N. (2019). Abstract

AbstractThe present study analyzed the use of Conversation Analysis in casual conversation and how it can serve as a potential means in language teaching. Casual conversation concerns the type of conversation that people do when they talk just for the sake of talking (Eggins & Slade, 1997). This includes daily conversations among people. Employing a qualitative research methodology, data were taken from a casual conversation taking place in Australia regarding a birthday party preparation between a husband and a wife whose native language is Bahasa Indonesia. Data were first transcribed in Bahasa Indonesia using CA conventions, and then were translated into English. The transcription of the conversation attempted to follow the guidelines proposed by Cook (1990) and Bailey (2008). The study found that turn-taking systems, adjacency pairs, overlaps, response tokens, and repairs were evident from the analysis of conversation. The conversation confirms the theories of CA: the occurrence of a large number of response tokens, such as mm hm or yes, various types of adjacency pairs, each speaker speaks one at a time even though there are several gaps and overlaps, and so forth. The study drew the implication of CA to language teaching. CA contributes to language teaching in terms of offering not only the authentic real-life communication, but also the authentic spoken interaction which will encourage learners to be able to produce authentic utterances. Also, CA can serve as a potential means to shape the students? ability as active participants in the learning process. How to Cite: Hidayat, D. N. Abstract

The present research aims to investigate the key features of turn taking in Mata Najwa talk show about Ragu-ragu Perpu (doubtful of rules of law). In addition, the authors propose to describe the use of turn-taking features between speaker to listener in Mata Najwa talk show. Moreover, The authors utilize a qualitative research methodology by applying a descriptive analysis in the research. To collect the data, the authors select the specific types of turn-taking occured between. In analyzing the data, the authors implemented Jacob L. Mey analysis theory in which selected the types of turn-taking into several forms. For instance, taking the floor (starting up, taking over, interruption, and overlaps), holding the floor, and yielding the floor. The results indicated that the conversation between seven speakers during the talk show are dominated by interruptions and overlapping. It indicates that 24 utterences express the existance of interruptions, while 16 lucutors show the overlapping. Moreover, the speakers tend to use several strategies to hold the talk, including verbal fillers, silent pauses, and lexical repetitions. Within the context of Mata Najwa talk show program, the host of the Mata Najwa tends to apply greetings and questions in yielding the talk to the interlocutors. In conclusion, interruption and overlapping are the two features of turn-taking mostly occured during the conversation.
