Abstract

The main objective of this study was to investigate speaking ability of Muhammadiyah University students. It is the most intense language ability which is used in communicating with others. Speaking material plays an important role in various language productions. Such conversation can be in the form of discussion, speech, debate, dialogue, storytelling, retelling. The speakers use oral language to express their desires, feelings, thoughts with others, so that people can understand what they want, but there are still many misunderstandings that can affect the students’ mastery of accuracy, fluency, flexibility and comprehensibility. A total number  of 35 students in third semester studens have been involved in this study, who are sampled by using total  sampling technique. From this study, it was found that leaning community can motivate students to speak up effectivelly. The students’ competence in speaking skills of Unismuh Makassar are not fully in line with curriculum expectations in terms of the critical thinking. Therefore,  to achieve the goal of teaching speaking skills, lecturer are required to use the methods that can encourage the leaners’ interest and motivate  more until their speaking skills can be improved. The key words of the learning community method are learning and sharing experiences with others, working with others to create better learning among members of groups enhance the awareness, confidance, and sharing experience. The finding of this study can improve the speaking abiity from learning community stages futhermore it has been answer the researh question  in terms of the application of Learning Community can attract studets participation in oral skill.

Abstract

The study attempted to explore lecturers? perceptions on the use of Facebook-based writing material in English class at STKIP Muhammadiyah Rappang, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The present study was a part of research and development (R&D). There were two writing lecturers of the English Education Department in 2016/ 2017 as the subject of the study. The data gained from the questionnaires of the lecturers? perception on the implementation of Facebook-based instructional material in English writing class using the Likert scale. The scoring system was done positive and negative statement score. The data have been analysed descriptively by using the frequency and percentage. It aimed to measure the lecturers? opinion. To interpret the lecturers? responds, the researchers used the interval estimation. The interval estimation was applied to measure the parameter of population based on the score of interval rates which ranged to 4 categories level. The results found that the lecturers agree that the content of learning English writing by using Facebook-based instructional materials are suitable for the students? level, their need for learning and their daily lives. The average score of lecturers? perceptions is 3.4 which indicates that from the four components of the product (content, language, presentation and graphic) overall shows suitability to the writing English material and to the students. It means that the implementation of Facebook-based instruction in teaching writing is interesting for the lecturers. It was proved by the results of the lecturers? perception

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of the implementation of verbal response learning model to the speaking ability students of Class X Madrasah Aliyah PP DDI As-Salman Allakuang Sidenreng Rappang Regency. This research was conducted in Madrasah Aliyah PP DDI As-Salman Allakuang Sidenreng Rappang Regency. The research method used quantitative method. The subject of the research is the students of class X Madrasah Aliyah PP DDI As-Salman Allakuang Sidenreng Rappang Regency academic year 2016/2017. The data collection technique used a test with two stages of data retrieval, the first test to determine the speaking ability before the students were given treatment (pretest) and the second stage to determine students' speaking ability after being given treatment (posttest). Results based on db of 52 converted to t-table at the 5% significance level obtained the price of 1.671. Criteria of submission are if t-test ≥ t-tabel then Ha accepted and Ho rejected, otherwise if t-test ≤ t-table then Ha rejected and Ho accepted. It turns out that t-test is magnitude 2.33 more than t-table, hence alternative hypothesis accepted and null hypothesis rejected. Based on these results it can be concluded that the application of verbal response learning model significantly affects the speaking ability of grade X Madrasah Aliyah PP DDI As-Salman Allakuang of Sidenreng Rappang Regency.

Abstract

The using of videos from YouTube channel in the EFL classroom is imperative to fill the educational needs of the younger generation. Although resources from textbook have remained the standard for centuries, currently, with the fast pace of the development of technology, the usage of YouTube videos in teaching and learning has become a trend. There are a few studies conducted on students? perceptions of using YouTube to learn the English language. The objective of this research was to investigate the students? perceptions on the use of YouTube in learning English process at English Education Department, Universitas Negeri Makassar Indonesia. Data were collected using a questionnaire that collected background information of participants and a five-point Likert scale to gauge the students? perception use of the YouTube in EFL classroom. Findings from this research indicate that the majority of students showed a positive perception toward and a willingness to use YouTube in the EFL classroom. It was also discovered that the students have used YouTube to help them completed their course assignments and study tasks. Hence, it can be concluded that the students preferred to use English YouTube videos to help them enhance their English language level proficiency.

Abstract

The use of the cap "Songkok Recca" is believed to have begun in the reign of the 31st Bone King named Andi Mappanyukki. The "Songkok Recca" hat used can show the social strata of the wearer. This study aims to look at public perceptions in the use of these hats associated with the social stratification of the Bugis community in Bone Regency. The study was conducted in Awangpone District, Bone Regency, South Sulawesi Province, using a qualitative approach, with a purposive sampling technique in determining informants. The method of collecting data using observation and interviews, with the number of informant’s as many as ten people. Data analysis techniques in this study are qualitative data analysis techniques. The results show that there a shift in the use of "Songkok Recca" hats today. In terms of social stratification, the use of the hat "Songkok Recca" no longer shows the degree of someone, but nowadays it is more described as a form of local wisdom of the Bugis community in Bone Regency.

Abstract

This research aims to measure the effectiveness of students’ writing skill through the application of Facebook group in English learning. It employed a quantitative method using the pre-experimental design. The subject of the research was the second-semester students of one of the private universities in South Sulawesi, Indonesia in the academic year of 2017/2018. They were selected purposively due to the writing problems occurred in the class. The total number of the sample was 20 students, which were taken by census sampling technique. The instrument was a writing test to obtain data on the students’ writing achievement through the Facebook group. The data analysis found that the students’ mean score in English writing was significantly improved. The students’ mean score in the pretest was 65.30 while their mean score in the posttest was 78.05. The t-table was also lower than the t-test, that is 2.093<6.04. Based on the result the researchers concluded that the application of Facebook group in English learning improved students’ ability in writing.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to measure the effectiveness of English "Shock Day" to improve university students' speaking ability. It employed a quantitative method using the pre-experimental design. The subject of the research was the fourth-semester students in one of the private universities in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, in the academic year of 2018/2019. The total population of this research was 76 students. The total number of the sample was 25 students were taken by cluster sampling technique. The instrument was a speaking test to obtain data on the students' speaking achievement through the implementation of English shock day. The data analysis found that the students' mean score in English speaking was significantly improved. The students' mean score in the pretest was 58.36, while their mean score in the posttest was 70.68. The t-table was also lower than the t-test, that is 2.093 < 6.650. Based on the result, the researchers concluded that the implementation of English shock day improved students' ability to speak.

Abstract

Abstract. The aims of this study was to find out whether or not of teaching of narrative text through SQ3R Strategy has improve students reading comprehension of X MIPA 1 class of SMA Negeri 4 Sidrap, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. This study used a pre-experimental method that consists pre-test and post-test. The total population is 90 students by taking one class as a sample using the quota sampling technique, namely class X MIPA 1 as a sample. The results of this study indicate the mean score of students’ post-test (76.25) is greater than the pre-test (53.2). This shows a significant difference between students taught by using the SQ3R strategy in teaching reading comprehension of narrative texts. The results in pre-test and post-test that p-value was lower α (0,000 <0.05). This means that H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected. The concluded that teaching reading comprehension by implementation of SQ3R Strategy has influence to improve the students of X MIPA 1 class in SMA Negeri 4 Sidrap, South Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract. The purpose of this research was to know the effectiveness of pictures in writing class of senior high school students. It employed a quantitative method using the quasi-experimental design. The subject of the research was the third year students of on senior high school in Sidrap Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The total number of population is 100 students which are distributed in 5 classes. Each class consists of 20 students. The sampling technique used in this research is cluster random sampling. The instrument was a writing test to obtain data on the students’ writing achievement through the pictures. Based on the result the researcher concluded that the pictures enhance the writing skill of senior high schools’ students.

Abstract

This research is aiming at giving a contribution to the lecturers’ knowledge on the design materials in using social media Facebook in teaching writing process to English Department students. Before conducted the developing module for Facebook-based writing instructional course, we surveyed and explored the student’s need. The stages of this research consisted of need analysis and document analysis. We conducted needs analysis to 141 English students and 2 lecturers of writing. Data were collected using need analysis questionnaire and interview. The analyzed documents in this research were lesson plan, syllabus and the existing textbooks. The data from questionnaire and interview were analyzed in quantitative and qualitative methods. The results concluded that: first, needs analysis is the basic of developing module for Facebook-based writing instructional course, in order that the material can be related to the students’ needs, levels and lecturers’ perception. The result of students need found urgent to develop module for facebook-based writing instructional course through the following criteria of interactive, self-contained, user friendly, online supporting, online social media, authentic, environmentally friendly, formal and informal environments, online evaluation, presented in visual  aids, support  and facilitate the students’  academic and non-academic writing activities, topics of the materials should be interesting which provides a cultural background of students, the materials should be implemented by applying vocabulary, reading texts, grammar and basic skills in writing process, implemented in beginner level (Writing 1), used in class and out- class and the materials globally/ international context. Second, the lecturers’ desires in teaching writing are to improve the students’ skill to comprehend the materials. Third, the existing materials are unsuitable for the students, they prefer learning facilitated by electronic social media, Facebook, so they will more motivate in write.
