Abstract

Background: Myopia has become a serious problem in some countries all over the world, particularly in Asia. Most number of myopia cases found in elementary school children. Its etiology is complex and is likely to involve the interaction genetic influences. This study aims to determine the relationship of genetic factors with the incidence of myopia in primary school age children. Methods:This is an observational analytic study using cross sectional approach which was conducted on May - June 2013. Two hundred elementary students with myopia in Cemara 2 Surakarta Elementary School met the criteria of restriction after getting eyes examination. Genetic factor and near work activities was acquired from questionnaire. Near work activities divided into how. The data were analyzed by use of chi square and multiple logistic regression, on SPSS 17.0. Difference was established by Odds Ratio (OR), significance was indicated by p value. Result: Chi-Square test analysis showed a significant association between parents suffers from myopia with the incidence of myopia in children. The analysis of the results obtained p <0.05,with value of p = 0.004. While the results for near work activities showed no significant p> 0.005. Conclusion: There is a relationship between parents suffer myopia with incidence of myopia in children at Cemara 2 Surakarta Elementary School. There was no relationship between the working distance is close to myopia in children. Keywords: Myopia, Genetic, Parental Myopia, Elementary Students

Abstract

Background: Refractive error occurs when the lights do not fall exactly at retina and cause blur vision. Visual system disorder causes balance disorder with vertigo symptom. This research aims to know the effect of refractive error on vertigo to patients at Ophthalmology Department of Dr. Moewardi Hospital. Methods: This research was observational-analitic with cross-sectional approach. The samples for this research were the patients at Ophthalmology Department of Dr. Moewardi Hospital aged 18-58 years old who has refractive error such as miopia, hipermetropia, or astigmatism while the second group (control) were people aged 18-58 years old without refractive error. Those samples were given questionnaire Vertigo Symptom Scale-Short Form and were tested for the balance to find out vertigo. Data was analyzed with Fisher Exact Test. Results: After the research to 25 patients with refractive error, 6 of 25 patients had vertigo. The second group, samples without refractive error had no vertigo. The result of Fisher Exact Test showed p value= 0,022 (p<0,05). Conclusions: There was effect of refractive error on vertigo to patients at Ophthalmology Department of Dr. Moewardi Hospital. Abstract

Background: Academic achievement is result of learning, which can be obtained by test. It is influenced by many internal factors (including five senses condition) and external factors. When there was an abnormality in the eye (including myopia), it will influence the learning procces, so the children cant get their best academic achievement. This study has a purpose to know if myopia is a risk factor for decreased academic achievement in children at SDN Cemara Dua Surakarta. Methods: This study is a case control study, conducted at SDN Cemara Dua Surakarta. Sample is divided into 2 groups (case group and control group) based on progress of academic achievement by end-semester report in year 2012/2013 (decreased or still/increased). And then refraction test by noncycloplegic autorefractometer is done to know myopia state of children. Independent variable is myopia, dependent variable is decreased academic achievement, and confounding factors are sex and tutoring. This study uses Chi-Square and multiple logistic regression to analyse data. Results: Students with myopia have probability 0.714 less than students without myopia to have a decreased academic achievement, but this relationship is not significant. (OR = 0.714; Cl 95% 0.252 s.d. 2.025; p = 0.525). Multiple logistic regression is not done because based on result of Chi-Square, confounding factors have p > 0.25 (sex p = 0.701, tutoring p = 0.750). Conclusions: Relationship between myopia and decreased academic achievement is not significant, so myopia is not a risk factor of decreased academic achievement in children at SDN Cemara Dua Surakarta. Keywords: Myopia, decreased academic achievement, case control, noncycloplegic autorefractometer.

Abstract

Background: Myopia is one of refractive errors most often occurs in children. Axial length appears to be a major determinant of refractive error. It has been theorized that a larger body might be associated with a greater axial length (AL) simply as a function of larger overall body size. Some studies suggest that taller people were more myopic than short people. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between height for age with myopia in children at SDN Cemara Dua Surakarta. Methods: An analytical observational study using a cross sectional design, was performed in Cemara Dua Surakarta Elementary School on May-June 2013. Total respondents were 180 people, taken by fixed disease sampling. Height for age was determined by respondents height z-score analysis that adjusted for TB/U growth chart based on WHO child growth standard. Status myopia obtained by screening using autorefractometer. Analysis of data was bivariate chi square, using SPSS program version 20.0 for windows. Results: This study shows 6 (3,3%) subject were stunted, 163 (90,6%) subject were normal, and 11 (6,1%) subject were heigt. Number of taller children in myopia were 7 people (63.6%) and not myopia were 4 people (36.4%). Chi Square test showed the results of p value = 0.351 (p < 0,05). Conclusions: There is no relationship between height for age with myopia in children at SDN Cemara Dua Surakarta. Keywords: Height, Age, Myopia.

Abstract

Background: The most common type of refractive error in school student was myopia. Some factors are predicted play a role in the onset of myopia, one of them is nearwork activity. Meanwhile, the globalization encourages children to do some nearwork activities, such as reading and using gadgets. The purpose of this study was to analyze the the relationship between duration of nearwork activity and children myopia. Methods: This study used observational analytic method with cross-sectional design research. The population was all students of SDN Cemara 2 Surakarta. Subjects were students of grade III to V who are either suffering myopia or not. The total subject were 200 children, which was 100 children with myopia picked by fixed disease sampling technique, and 100 children with no myopia picked by simple random sampling technique. The data were collected by measurement with autorefractometre and questionnaires. The data obtained were analyzed by using multiple logistic regression with SPSS 17.0 for Windows. Result: From 200 subjects found that total children myopia who do nearwork activities longer 54 (52%) and children with no myopia who do nearwork activities longer 50 (48%). The results of multiple logistic regression statistical test showed that duration of nearwork activity and children myopia have no significant relationship statistically (p = 0,59). Conclusion: There was no significant relationship between duration of nearwork activity and children myopia.
