Abstract

This paper is an attempt to refresh the understanding of the concepts of Sufism, particularly the concept of mahabbah of al-Ghazâlî. In the course of time, an understanding of the concepts of Sufism often narrowed and this impressed to the practices of Sufism that only oriented to total devotion to God without any awareness to implement the devotion as a code of ethics in the social life. Through his work, Ihyâ’ ‘Ulûm al-Dîn, al-Ghazâlî reviewed concepts, meaning, causes, nature and connection of mahabbah with humanitarian values. Al-Ghazâlî realized that the peak of happiness and peace of mind is the achievement of a person to the true knowledge, which is ma‘rifat Allâh. However, to him, the true knowledge arises from someone’s persistence in affirming its sincerity to God as the implementation of his/her true love that is inimitable. This sincere love gave rise to a worldview that His love is the source of all forms of love to other than Him, the humanbeings and the universe.

Abstract

The inter-civilization dialogue is necessary: unavoidable. There is no civilization can improve its self without an interaction with other civilization. This phenomenon brings Thaha Husain to review how the civilization of Egypt could be “out of date” compared with the Western civilization. He assumes that it was because of traditional thinking of Muslims. In his opinion, Muslims believe that Islamic tradition is the perfect one: no need to learn from other tradition. Husain talks that to realize this decline is better than to feel perfect (apology). According to Husain, Muslims should learn from history, learn from Western civilization—which is more advanced. In this context, academic fairness is very important for Muslim intellectual to create an academic tradition. Husain supposes that imitating the tradition of the West doesn’t mean imitating its religion. Humanity is the key. From Thaha Husain’s thinking, there are two lessons that can be contemplated. First, life in the tradition is a necessity as life in modern culture. Therefore, there is no tradition which does not accept change and debate in line with the dynamics of humanity. Second, rational approach, scientific and historical criticism is of capital importance to catch up with Western civilization

Abstract

Abstract

The presence of Islam within humanity space would, in fact, lead to the creation of life order to fulfill tawhîd and peace of the world. The problem of tawhîd is the very core of life, though its meaning has, sometimes, tended to be theocentric by neglecting anthropocentric dimension. It can be observed through ideological reasoning of radicalism group in defining jihâd as a means of struggle to uphold oneness of God, though this group put less interested in presenting Islam within principles of peace. It suggests that oneness of God (tawhîd) is purely intended to Him and it has no relation with human. This problem needs to be re-observed, if not to be sued, by looking at universal values from the presence of Islam in which it has been so far known as highly honoring peace and values of humanity as well as values of divinity.

Abstract

The scientific traditions of Islamic boarding schools in the archipelago or Nusantara have very unique characters because they are based on a very strong yellow book reference. In addition, Islamic boarding schools have become accustomed to interacting with differences of opinion, especially in responsing to laws regarding certain local traditions that develop in traditional Muslim environments. Various works have been produced in response to local traditional law with different issues. One of them is the work of KH. Muhammad Faqih Maskumambang Gresik entitled Sharĥ Hazz al-Raús Fī Radd al-Jāsús, a book that reveals the debate about the author with KH. Hasyim Asy'ari Jombang has to do with the traditional law of hitting Kentongan. The debate between the two senior figures of the pesantren and NU has given rise to noble traditions, namely even though they differ in the frame of mutual respect. His article only reveals the question of how epistemic reasoning used by Kiai Faqih Maskumambang and Kiai Hasyim Asy'ari in understanding the text of the Qur'an and hadith, as well as how the comments of the flu are related to the tradition of hitting the Kentongan ahead or after the adhan as a sign of entering prayer. Even though the arguments used are the same, only the conclusions of understanding give birth to very basic differences; a difference that describes local fiqh that is unique, and serious at the same time. The rest of the two remained together in difference. Together in NU and the Aswaja Islamic tradition, it is different because both have conclusions that are not the same in establishing the law of hitting kentongan.

Abstract

Kiai Abdul Hamid Pasuruan merupakan tokoh fenomenal, bahkan dikenal kewaliannya oleh lapisanmasyarakat. Ia telah mewariskan banyak hal, khususnya ajaran Islam Ahl Sunna wal al-jamaah.Warisan-warisannya yang mampu menyejukkan bagi umat hingga mengantarkan makamnya sampaihari ini masih menjadi tujuan ziarah;Darinya, Islam disuguhkan dengan cara lembut tanpa menakutkan kepada sesama. Bahkan, ia selalumengedepankan agar orang lain senang, sebelum dirinya senang. Langkah ini dilakukan tidak lepasdari pemahamannya yang holistik atas Islam, yang konon mampu mengkombinasikan logikanormatif fikih dengan nilai substansial tasawuf dalam konteks kehidupan bermasyarakat luas.Kombinasi normatifitas fikih dan tasawuf mengantarkan ia tegas, sekaligus lembut. Tegas dalam soalpraktik-praktik keagamaan. Tapi, lembut dalam membangun hubungan dengan siapapun. Dalamlingkup praktik kehidupan, Kiai Hamid mampu mengajak umat agar terus mengerjakan perintahIslam, sembari dalam konteks tetap mengajak dan memberikan contoh kepada mereka, kaitanpentingnya mejaga harmoni dengan sesama.Dari potret kesejarahan hidupnya, ditemukan bahwa Inti dari perannya dengan pola pikir moderatadalah menjaga selalu kesejukan umat melalui pembumian Islam secara menyeluruh dari formalismenuju substansialis atau dari ketuhanan menuju kemanusiaan. Konsistensi ini ini menjadi jalan, iadipandang masih hidup, sekalipun meninggal lama seiring makamnya tidak pernah sepi dikunjungimasyarakat.

Abstract

Aswaja adalah aliran dalam Islam yang diidentikkan mengikuti tradisi bermadhab dalam ber-Islam (dalam Akidah, fikih, dan tasawuf). Pilihan bermadhab ini bukan hanya sebatas mengikuti pendapat para ulama, tapi sekaligus mengikuti pola pikir dan tindakannya dalam melihat berbagai persoalan dengan perspektif moderasi. Karenanya, lahirnya wacana Aswaja dalam turast karya pesantren yang ditulis oleh para kiai adalah dalam rangka memperkuat basis ideologi yang dianut; sebagai penganut setia Islam Aswaja. Hal ini cukup beralasan bahwa karya-karya yang ada hubungan dengan Aswaja senantiasa hadir sebagai counter terhadap maraknya fundamentalism dan liberalism, yang sama-sama ekstrem menolak tradisi bermadhab. Salah satu karya itu adalah tulisan Kiai Abul Fadhal Senori yang  berjudul Sharah al-Kawakib al-Lama?ah. Ulasannya cukup detail, bukan saja soal menafsirkan makna Aswaja. Tapi, sekaligus penegasan yang ilmiah untuk tidak memasukkan sebagai kelompok Aswaja kepada aliran fundamentalis yang cenderung tekstualis dan aliran liberalis yang rasionalis serta menyebut ancaman keduanya bagi nilai-nilai moderasi model Aswaja
