Abstract

Successful learners are enthusiastic, exhibit confident attitudes toward learning have positive expectations from it and do not experience anxiety about learning. Because the attitude toward learning one has inevitably in fluency the outcomes, the more positive attitudes one has, the better he or she performs in learning. The objectives of this research was to find out the students’ attitude toward lecturer’s explanation at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. This research employed descriptive Quantitative. The participants of this research were 38 students in F class and 2 Lecturers at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. The result of the research was collected through the use of Questionnaires and audio-video camera, and then it was calculated and transcribed to be analyzed. The result of research from the questionnaire that was distributed to the 38 students consists of 20 items and open ended question show The Students’ attitudes toward lectures explanation at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar were good attitude (82).It was the students’ students’ attitude toward lecturer’s explanation in EFL classroom at University Muhammadiyah of Makassar is positive. The Students have positive attitude toward lecturer in presenting the material in the classroom. Besides that, they perceive that teacher’s explanation that showed by the lecturer are prepare, enthusiasm, summarizing, good explanation, sympathy, friendly. Good characteristics of lecturers’ explanation in EFL classroom at University Muhammadiyah of Makassar. The lecturers always make a good explanation in presenting the materials, namely; prepare before teaching, giving the example from simple to complicated, the lecturers always checking understanding of the students, explaining the material more than one if the material is difficult, and making summarizing of the end in teaching process.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the effect of strategies-based instruction on students’ speaking skill at Lakidende University and the students’ interest in learning English through strategies-based instruction. This research employed Quasi Experimental Method, with non-equivalent control group design. This research assigned experimental group and control group (30 students for each).Speaking test was used to see the effect of strategies-based instruction on students’ speaking skill and questionnaire was used to see students’ interest in learning English through strategies-based instruction. The data obtained through the speaking test were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Meanwhile, the data from questionnaire were analyzed in percentage and descriptive statistics. The students’ speaking skill covered three components: accuracy, fluency, and comprehensibility. The findings showed that there was an improvement on the students’ speaking ability after the treatment. There was a significant difference between the results of post-test of experimental and control group, where the mean score of post-test of experimental group was 70.37, which was higher than the mean score of post-test of control group was 59.63.The value of P-value or sig. (2-tailed) shows that P-value or sig. (2-tailed) is smaller than α (0.00 < 0.05).Furthermore, the data that were collected from questionnaire showed that the students were very high interest toward strategies-based instruction. It is showed by the mean score in scale of 89.6, which was categorized as very high interest. Keywords: effect, strategy-based instruction, speaking skill

Abstract

This study aimed at determining whether or not the knowledge, educational level, perception, and attitude of the pesantren students affect the implementation of the multilingual simultaneous-sequential model (MSSM). This research employed quantitative research using a survey design. The sample of the study consisted of 100 students of three pesantren schools in the city of Makassar (Pesantren Modern IMMIM, Pondok Madinah, and Pesantren Darul Arqam Muhammadiyah Gombara). The data were collected through the questionnaire and be analyzed descriptively and inferentially using SPSS program. The results found that the knowledge, level of education, perception, and attitude of pesantren students collectively had a positive impact on the MSSM. However, these perceptions have no significant effect on the MSSM implementation partially. The results of this study contributed to developing further multilingual teaching and learning material such as syllabus, lesson plan, and course book for pesantren students in Indonesia, especially in Makassar.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan pengaruh penghargaan diri, kecemasan, jenis kelamin, dan hubungan di antara variabel independen terhadap komunikasi lisan pebelajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Untuk mengumpulkan data penelitian ini, tiga jenis instrumen telah digunakan, yakni (1) skala penghargaan diri, (2) skala kecemasan, dan (3) tes komunikasi lisan. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis dengan menerapkan statistik deskriptif dan inferensial. Berdasarkan temuan penelitian ini, penulis akhirnya berkesimpulan bahwa (1) secaraterpisah penghargaan diri memengaruhi komunikasi lisan pebelajar, (2) kecemasan secara signifikan memengaruhi komunikasi lisan pebelajar, (3) jenis kelamin tidak berpengaruh secara signifikan pada komunikasi lisan pebelajar, dan (4) penghargaan diri, kecemasan, dan jenis kelamin (variabel independen) secara bersama-sama berpengaruh terhadap komunikasi lisan pebelajar, hanya kecemasan yang menujukkan pengaruh signifikan terhadap komunikasi lisan pembelajar.

Abstract

The study attempted to explore lecturers? perceptions on the use of Facebook-based writing material in English class at STKIP Muhammadiyah Rappang, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The present study was a part of research and development (R&amp;D). There were two writing lecturers of the English Education Department in 2016/ 2017 as the subject of the study. The data gained from the questionnaires of the lecturers? perception on the implementation of Facebook-based instructional material in English writing class using the Likert scale. The scoring system was done positive and negative statement score. The data have been analysed descriptively by using the frequency and percentage. It aimed to measure the lecturers? opinion. To interpret the lecturers? responds, the researchers used the interval estimation. The interval estimation was applied to measure the parameter of population based on the score of interval rates which ranged to 4 categories level. The results found that the lecturers agree that the content of learning English writing by using Facebook-based instructional materials are suitable for the students? level, their need for learning and their daily lives. The average score of lecturers? perceptions is 3.4 which indicates that from the four components of the product (content, language, presentation and graphic) overall shows suitability to the writing English material and to the students. It means that the implementation of Facebook-based instruction in teaching writing is interesting for the lecturers. It was proved by the results of the lecturers? perception

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying intercultural sensitivity elements perceived by English department students in an Indonesian university. Broadly, this study used mix-methods: quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data were obtained through questionnaires. The questionnaires were sent to 100 participants and followed by semi-structured interview of 10 participants. For this paper, only quantitative data were used. The findings show that there were three important intercultural sensitivity dimensions: cultural engagement, respect to cultural differences and interaction enjoyment. This study contributes to the more understanding of intercultural dimensions and debates across the globe about intercultural issues. In addition, this study provides methodological contribution on the set of criteria to determine the scale of intercultural sensitivity.  This study has further implication of the teaching and learning as one of the key elements on English curriculum. The study suggested that the research on wider participants can further enhance the sounding of this findings and provide overarching understanding of intercultural sensitivity.

Abstract

The using of videos from YouTube channel in the EFL classroom is imperative to fill the educational needs of the younger generation. Although resources from textbook have remained the standard for centuries, currently, with the fast pace of the development of technology, the usage of YouTube videos in teaching and learning has become a trend. There are a few studies conducted on students? perceptions of using YouTube to learn the English language. The objective of this research was to investigate the students? perceptions on the use of YouTube in learning English process at English Education Department, Universitas Negeri Makassar Indonesia. Data were collected using a questionnaire that collected background information of participants and a five-point Likert scale to gauge the students? perception use of the YouTube in EFL classroom. Findings from this research indicate that the majority of students showed a positive perception toward and a willingness to use YouTube in the EFL classroom. It was also discovered that the students have used YouTube to help them completed their course assignments and study tasks. Hence, it can be concluded that the students preferred to use English YouTube videos to help them enhance their English language level proficiency.

Abstract

This research aims to measure the effectiveness of students’ writing skill through the application of Facebook group in English learning. It employed a quantitative method using the pre-experimental design. The subject of the research was the second-semester students of one of the private universities in South Sulawesi, Indonesia in the academic year of 2017/2018. They were selected purposively due to the writing problems occurred in the class. The total number of the sample was 20 students, which were taken by census sampling technique. The instrument was a writing test to obtain data on the students’ writing achievement through the Facebook group. The data analysis found that the students’ mean score in English writing was significantly improved. The students’ mean score in the pretest was 65.30 while their mean score in the posttest was 78.05. The t-table was also lower than the t-test, that is 2.093&lt;6.04. Based on the result the researchers concluded that the application of Facebook group in English learning improved students’ ability in writing.

Abstract

Abstract. This study aimed at finding out the Students’ Perception on the Use of Ruangguru Application in Their English Learning. The researcher applied mixed method (quantitative and qualitative). The population of this research was the second grade students of Senior High School of Athirah Islamic School Makassar in 2019/2020 academic year. The sample was taken consisted of 24 students which were taken by using simple random sampling technique. The data were obtained through the questionnaire were analysed and tabulated based on the classification of perception using Likert scale and the data from interview were analysed by recording and transcribing it. The results of data analysis showed that (1) students’ perception was positive on the use of Ruangguru application in their English learning by mean score 70 (2) based on the students’ classification that 5 (20.8%) students classified as Strongly positive, 10 (41.7%) students classified as Positive, 5 (20.8%) students classified as Moderate, 3 (12.5%) students classified as Negative and 1 (4.5%) students classified as Strongly negative. This was indicated that most students like using Ruangguru in their English learning.

Abstract

The present study attempted to investigate and measure the performances of multilingual and mono-multilingual students of the pesantren modern IMMIM in Makassar. This study employed the mixed-method approach where the 30 students of the Junior High School were selected randomly and participated as the subject of the research. The qualitative data gained through the interview and observation of the students’ behavior in English speaking and the quantitative data obtained through the speaking test. The results show that the multilingual students tend to behave extrovert and ambivert behavior in English speaking while the mono-multilingual students behave introvert. It was strengthened by the speaking test achievement which shows that the multilingual students have the high score in terms of the fluency and comprehensibility while the mono-multilingual students have the high score regarding the accuracy, especially in grammar
