Abstract

The farmers in Indonesia have not maximally taken advantage of the existence of rice husk; therefore the huge number of the husk becomes disturbing waste, which spoils environment. The waste of rice husk is potentially capable of improving the farmers’ economy amidst the people’s lack of knowledge about its potential to commercially produce charcoal briquettes from it, make it a plant growing medium, and change it into manure. This research aims at knowing if the training of recycling waste of rice husk can improve the farmers’ entrepreneurship motivation. The subjects of the research were farmers in groups at Bimomartani village, Ngemplak district, Sleman regency. They were 60 participants divided into experintal and control groups. The planned experiment used untreated control group design with dependent pretest and posttest samples. The paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test were used as the techniques of analysis in this research. The result of t-test on paired sample t-test for the experimental group resulted in the value of t = -6.659 with p = 0.000 (p<0.01), which means there was a significant difference of entrepreneurship motivation before and after the training of recycling rice husk. The analysis for Independent sample t-test resulted in the value of t = 7.411 with p = 0.000 (p<0.01), which means there was a significant difference of entrepreneurship motivation between experimental and control groups. It can be concluded that the training of recycling waste of rice husk was effective in improving the farmers’ entrepreneurship motivation.

Abstract

ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND WASTE MANAGEMENT TRAINING IN ARGOREJO VILLAGE, SEDAYU, BANTUL, YOGYAKARTA. Ministry of Environment noted that the average population of Indonesia produces around 2.5 liters of waste per day or 625 million liters of the total population. This condition will continue to grow according to the environment. According to the Indonesian Waste Statistics (2012) the amount of waste that appears throughout Indonesia reaches 38.5 million tons per year with the dominant waste being in Java (21.2 million tons per year). Waste generation will not decrease or run out and will even continue to grow along with the growth of human population and the higher and more complex human activities. The accumulation of waste that is getting bigger from day to day will reduce space and disrupt human activities so that the human goal to improve the quality of life actually makes the quality of life decrease due to waste generation problems.Method used is to provide counseling and training directly to the general public with material for entrepreneurship motivation and waste bank management using lecture, discussion, and question and answer methods. Results obtained were the extension activities and the training went well and the participants actively participated in the extension activities to completion. Counseling is done interactively between the speakers and the participants present.

Respondents were examined related to their dental and oral hygiene levels. It was measured by the PHP Index (Patient Hygiene Perfomance) before and after the intervention. According to results, The average score of respondents’dental and oral hygine pre test was 0.0823 and the average post test score of respondents’dental and oral hygiene was 1.4830. There is the difference of 1.4007. This shows an increament in oral hygiene of the respondent before and after the education. The results of statistical analysis show that there is an influence of oral and dental hygiene which pvalue 0,000 <0.05. Abstract

Background: Passive smoking has been known to be associated with the risks of several diseases. Children are a group vulnerable to becoming passive smokers through adjacent adult smokers. Objective: To describe the characteristics of children with secondhand smoking. Methods: This research is a descriptive study involving 39 subjects of grade 4, 5, and 6 elementary school students. Inclusion criteria are having no subjective complaints of respiratory disturbances in the last 1 month, not smoking, living with parents/guardians/other family members that smoke inside the house, and willing to become respondents. Meanwhile, exclusion criterion was not returning the questionnaire. Samples were collected using purposive sampling technique. This study was conducted at Banguntapan Public Elementary School, Bantul in Agustus-September 2015. Instruments used in this study included questionnaires and spirometer. Data were analyzed univariately using frequency distribution. Results: More than half of the respondents were ≥ 11 years of age, female in gender, had parents that were ≥ 40 years of age, had parents that worked as labors, lived with one smoking family member, had parents that had started smoking at the age of < 24 years old, had parents that smoked ≥ 9 cigarettes per day, had parents that smoke outside the house, had parents that are mild smokers, and were not exposed to cigarette smoke. The highest level of education of the respondents’ parents was mostly (43.6%) senior high school. Subjective complaints of respiratory disturbances were reported by 74.4% of the respondents. Conclusion: Although no significant signs and symptoms of secondhand smoking were found, children that lived with smoking family members still need to be kept on watch. This is because more than half of the respondents of this study were reporting complaints of respiratory disturbances. Therefore, it is necessary to control the cigarette consumption of parents/ guardians, especially of those who still smoke inside the house.

Abstract

There are some groups who may get the risks of hospital waste disposal. The first group is the patients who come to hospital to get cure and care. It is the most vulnerable group. The second is hospital’s employees who have direct contact with the patients as main illness’s agents on doing their daily duties. The third group is the visitor or those who accompany the patients; their risk is big as well. The last group is the society, people who live near the hospital, even when the waste siposal is done inappropriately. It causes the decrease of environmental quality which leads to the decline of health quality in the area. Hence, hospital has a responsibility to manage the disposal process of waste correctly and appropriately by conducting sanitation programs in hospital. Jogja Hospital is a Government-owned Hospital run by the Government of city of Jogyakarta. In its daily activities, the hospital produces waste which, if not properly discharged or burned, may cause adverse effect on workers as well as the surrounding area. Jogja hospital has Incinerator, thus simplifying the management such waste.
