Abstract

Teaching of English now should also be incorporated with the intercultural knowledge of target language, including to young learners. It can make them aware of differences and similarities between their own culture and the culture of the target language. This study was a qualitative study which investigated how the intercultural teaching and learning was implemented to young learners in an English classroom in Karawang,West Java, Indonesia. The principles of Intercultural language teaching and learning proposed by Liddicoat & Scarino (2013) were used by the teacher in the activities. The data was taken by observing the teaching and learning process to 25 seventh grade students in the classroom that was done in four meetings and interviewing 6 sample of students to know their responses. The findings showed that the intercultural English teaching and learning provides more opportunities for young learners to be more active and critical toward other language and cultures as well as improve their English skills. Since they are still young, they still should be guided to understand the material well by the teacher. Finally, it is recommended to other teachers to implement intercultural English teaching and learning in teaching English to young learners.

Abstract

In learning English for specific purpose, students sometimes do not get appropriate materials with their needs. ESP materials are more specific than general English, so students should receive materials related to their background of field. This research aimed at finding out the relevance between an ESP syllabus and the students’ needs. This research used qualitative method that deals with a single or small-case studied in detail. The population was taken from the 1st semester students of Mechanical Engineering Department at University of Singaperbangsa Karawang. Random sampling was 24 students that was taken from two classes out of 120 students. The data was taken by distributing questionnaire to students and analyzing the syllabus designed by teacher. The result of this research shows that most students who are working in companies need to learn speaking skill as the most important skill as well as grammar. In addition, the ESP syllabus provided by teacher is quite relevant to the students’ needs. Therefore, it is suggested that teacher conducts a need analysis to students before designing syllabus, so it can be relevant with the students’ needs.

Abstract

Abstract

In this globalization era, teaching English has to also involve intercultural aspects in order that students can develop their awareness towards the differences of the culture of the target language. The intercultural teaching and learning English can be corporated with reading skill activities as suggested by Usó-Juan & Martínez-Flor (2008). This study was a qualitative study which potrayedreading activities to assist intercultural teaching and learning English. The data were taken with observation of teaching learning in the classroom with 25 students of 2nd semester at a state university in Karawang, West Java. 6 students were also selected to have interview in order to know their response and understanding. Finaly, there were some reading activities, such as critical reading and cultural bump, conducted in the classroom that could quite effectively improve the students’ intercultural awareness. Some students also responded by giving positive statements about reading skill activities so their intercultural understanding could improve. However, implementing these activities were not an easy task because the teacher needs to understand the theoritical concept of intercultural language learning.
