Abstract

Attention and memory are influenced by anxiety. This study aimed to analyze the effect of coloring therapy on the improvement of attention and short-term memory function in young adult women with anxiety. The analytic quasi-experimental method was used with pre-test and post-test design. The measured data were attention (Stroop test score) and short-term memory (Scenery Picture Memory Test / SPMT score). The subjects were 25 female university students with anxiety (Depression Anxiety Stress Scale / DASS-42 score ?8). This study showed the mean Stroop test scores of pre-test and post-test were 136.20 and 72.60 seconds subsequently, and the mean SPMT scores of pre-test and post-test were 17.88 and 20.92 subsequently. Wilcoxon's statistical analysis test with ?=0.05 showed a p-value of 0.000 for both the Stroop test and SPMT score (highly significant). We concluded that coloring therapy improved attention and short-term memory function in young adult women with anxiety. Keywords: coloring therapy, attention, short-term memory, cognitive, anxiety

Abstract

The previous study shows ethanol extract of Filicium decipiens leaf possesses a strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, but there have been no studies of the antibacterial activity with different solvents. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activities of methanol, n-hexane fraction of methanol and n-hexane extract of F. decipiens leaves against S. aureus and Bacillus subtilis bacteria. Extraction was carried out by soxletation method using methanol and n-hexane solvent. The antibacterial activity test was done by measuring the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and Zone of Inhibition. The results showed that methanol extract did not have activity either against S. aureus bacteria or against B. subtilis. N-hexane extract which was fractionated from methanol extract had no activity against B. subtilis but showed moderate activity against S. aureus with 9 mm inhibition diameter at an extract concentration of 40%. N-hexane extract has very strong antibacterial activity against S. aureus with inhibition diameter reaching 21 mm at extract concentration of 30% and showing strong activity against B. subtilis bacteria with inhibition diameter of 10 mm at extract concentration of 30%. It can be concluded that n-hexane extract from F. decipiens has a potent as natural antibiotic material. Abstract

Domestic chicken eggshells contain calcium and protein that could be useful in wound healing process. This research was conducted to determine whether domestic chicken eggshells can accelerate wound healing. Twenty one male Swiss-Webster mice  with 2 cm incision were divided into 3 groups. Negative control group were given Carboxymethyl cellulose 1% (CMC), positive control group were given feracrylum 1% (FER), and the eggshells group given domestic chicken eggshells powder (KT). Treatment and data mesurement was measured every day until  the 7th day. On the 7th  day the average length of the wound were analyzed and the skin tissue is taken for microscopic examination. Data analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Post Hoc Least Significant Difference (LSD) with p=0,05. On macroscopic examination, there were  highly significant differences between KT compared to CMC and highly significant differences between KT compared to FER. the average length of wound on the 7th day on KT 0,63 cm shorter than CMC 1,07 (p=0,000) and FER 0,81 cm (p=0,003). On microscopic examination, the degree of reepithelization on KT groups are severe, moderate for collagen density, fibroblasts density, subepithelial neutrophil density, degree of edema, and mild for angiogenesis. We conclude domestic chicken eggshells powder can accelerate wound healing. Key words: domestic chicken eggshells, incision wound, wound healing

Abstract

Snake-bite is an important medical emergency case and caused of many hospitaladmission especially in the rural area, forests, plantations and swamps. Despite its importance, there have been fewer proper data of snake-bite incidence in Indonesia. World HealthOrganization estimate that at least 421,000 envenomings and 20,000 deaths from snakebitesoccur each year, especially in South and South East Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The authorsreport a case of a 76-year-old man came to Hasan Sadikin Hospital with chief complaint woundin his right hand and right forearm from snake-bite. Snake-bites can cause DIC because thevenom activates the coagulation system and cause fibrinolysis which occurs in less than 24hours. Laboratory results, we found abnormalities such as anemia, thrombocytopenia, hypofibrinogenemia, and increased levels of D-dimer. Patients were treated for 8 days and thenallowed to go home. Snake-bite is an occupational disease of farmers, plantation workers, herdsmen, fishermen, other. Snake bite cases require prompt and comprehensive managementso as to minimize the possibility of disability and death. Keywords: snake bite, DIC, hypertension

Abstract

Self-Directed Learning (SDL) is an important skill that must be achieved by medical students. The aim of this study is to identify the level of self-motivation and SDL readiness in the medicalstudents as well as to identify factors affecting SDL. This is is a mixed method research, involving first-year and clinical year medical students. A quantitative research is conducted bydistributing self-motivation (MSLQ) and SDL questionnaire (SDLRS). A total sampling isapplied to select the respondents. Furthermore, focus group discussion (FGD) on students andtutors/preceptors is carried out. Informants are chosen by purposive sampling method. Thisresearch reveals that most of medical students have a good level of self-motivation but a lowlevel of SDL readiness. Nevertheless, the mean scores of SDL readiness in both groups showsno significant differences. The research also identifies four major factors affecting the SDLreadiness, namely the students’ characteristics, learning process, the role of tutors/preceptorsand supporting facilities for learning. There is no significant difference between SDL readinessof the first-year and clinical year of medical students. Unprepared students’ characteristics,sub-optimal learning process, unsupported role of tutors/preceptors and inadequate learningresources are found to be the mayor factors influencing SDL readiness. Keywords: self-directed learning readiness; self-motivation; problem-based learning

Abstract

Acute renal injury is characterized by decrement of glomerular filtration rate (GFR), resulting in nitrogen metabolic end product retention such as blood ureum. Aminoglycoside nephrotoxic injuries are common in elderly, with mortality rate 50-70%. Tempuyung has been empirically used in relieving renal problems as it contains several active antioxidants. This study aimed to analyze the protective effect of ethanol extract tempuyung leaf (EET) against gentamicin induced renal injury viewed from blood ureum level. The method used was true experimental laboratory, 16 wistar male rats, divided into 4 groups (n=4): negative control group (CMC), positive control group (Gentamicin 80 mg/kgBW), 1st treatment group (EET 100 mg/kgBW + Gentamicin), 2nd treatment group (EET 200 mg/kgBW + Gentamicin) for ten days. On the 11th day, blood serum were taken and the ureum level were analyzed. Data was analyzed by ANOVA and post hoc LSD test. Result showed positive control group had the highest blood ureum level (29.50  1.29 mg/dL) compared to negative control group (14.25  1.26 mg/dL), 1st treatment group (26.50  0.58 mg/dL), and 2nd treatment group (22.25  1.26 mg/dL) with significance difference (p<0,001). In conclusion, the result suggested the protective effect of EET against gentamicin induced renal injury. Keywords: acute renal injury, gentamicin, glomerular filtration rate, tempuyung, ureum
