Abstract

There is a strong link between religious fundamentalist movements and the globalization (economic) project. In the context of Western civilization, fundamentalist movements are closely linked to the “critical discussion” on the antinomy of modernity. These movements reached a new phase in the second half of the 20 century, namely a “confrontation” between Western civilization and the East (Islam). On the one hand, the Western civilization model of the globalization project grows due to a certain form of fundamentalism within itself, namely an economic fundamentalism. On the other hand fundamentalist movements within Islam which turn religion into ideology, put forward a programme for the “universalisation” of Islam as the basis of a world order. The world order which is presently dominated by the Western civilization model, characterized by the capitalistic and the secular, has to end and be replaced by a world order based on Islamic law. This movement works on a principle of compulsion. The “rivalry” between the two has no connection at all with a “clash of civilizations” but rather with the fact that globalization in its present form is only possible for a rich elite minority. A middle way must be worked out, not the globalization of the economic or political system, nor the globalization of a particular ideology, whether secular or religious, but rather the globalization of Aufklärung (enlightenment) and of solidarity. Abstract

A social trend that should trigger an emotional reaction in Indonesia as a nation that has enjoyed independence for the past 68 years, is none other than human trafficking. Indonesia is listed at 114 in the register of this modern form of slavery with around 220 thousand victims9 . Globally, there are around 29.8 million victims of human trafficking. Indonesia is one of the 17 source, transit and destination countries, involving criminal activities such as sex slavery, forced labour and child procurement. This situation is pretty evenly spread among all of Indonesia’s Provinces. The roots, the process and a way forward are highlighted in this brief study. Abstract

Abstract: Indonesian history has been filled with many radical ideas and movements aiming to bring about radical changes in the direction of the nation state. Yet radicalism has created fear and angst amongst communities. This paper examines the narrative of radicalism and fear as constructed in an Indonesian Catholic document published in 1967. The document narrates the historical and political events from Indonesia’s independence to the early years of Suharto’s New Order regime, with a particular focus on the Madiun incident of 1948 and the Crocodile Hole tragedy of 1965. The paper argues that the document scrutinized is nothing but a fear text, and the fear narrative as constructed in the text is related to radicalism – namely the leftist radicalism represented by the Indonesian communists pre-1965, and the rightist radicalism represented by religious (Muslim) radicals post-1965. This main argument is explained with reference to Martin Heidegger’s philosophy of fear, and it concludes that the fear experiences concerning the communist past is paralelled with the experiences of fear in recent times in relation to religious (Islamic) radicalism. Namun radikalisme telah menciptakan ketakutan dan kecemasan di antara masyarakat. Makalah ini mengkaji narasi radikalisme dan ketakutan yang dibangun dalam dokumen Katolik Indonesia yang diterbitkan pada tahun 1967. Dokumen tersebut menceritakan peristiwa sejarah dan politik dari kemerdekaan Indonesia hingga tahun-tahun awal rezim Orde Baru Suharto, dengan fokus khusus pada insiden Madiun dari 1948 dan tragedi Lubang Buaya 1965. Makalah ini berpendapat bahwa dokumen yang diteliti tidak lain adalah teks ketakutan, dan narasi rasa takut yang terkonstruksi dalam teks ini terkait dengan radikalisme - yaitu radikalisme kiri yang diwakili oleh komunis Indonesia pra-1965, dan radikalisme kanan yang diwakili oleh radikal agama (Muslim) pasca-1965. Argumen utama ini dijelaskan dengan mengacu pada filosofi rasa takut Martin Heidegger, dan disimpulkan pengalaman-pengalaman ketakutan mengenai masa lalu komunis dilumpuhkan dengan pengalaman-pengalaman ketakutan belakangan ini dalam kaitannya dengan radikalisme agama (Islam). Abstract

This essay details how an “intuitive reading” of the Book of Ruth by a group of HIV carriers from Flores island, Indonesia, renewed their faith. The men caught the virus as economic migrants and then proceeded to give it to their wives on returning home sick. Rejected by family and by many members of the clergy, they have formed their own support group. Coming from the interior, most were not regular church goers before contacting the virus. Some years ago they began reading the Scriptures regularly once a month. They easily identified with Naomi and Ruth, with their failed migration, and with the tactics they were forced to use in order to survive on returning to Bethlehem. Members of the HIV support group, largely unsupported by the institutional Church or by their extended families, have discovered in reading the Bible together a liberating Word that has rekindled a deep personal faith in the God of compassion. Abstract

This essay presents two types of tolerance: passive tolerance and active or authentic tolerance. Passive tolerance is vertical and is illustrated in the attitude of one being forced by a pluralist societal situation to allow others to exist. Here tolerance is a gift from the powerful majority but can be taken away at any time if minorities infringe a number of conditions. Active or authentic tolerance accepts the right to existence, freedom and the wish of others to develop precisely as others. This principle of tolerance is in accord with the situation of contemporary democratic societies that are plural and which are characterized by potential conflict due to differing concepts of the good life. This essay illustrates how the concept of authentic tolerance is an appropriate model for a post-secular society marked by an increasingly public function by religion. Toleransi pasif bersifat vertikal dan tampak dalam sikap terpaksa membiarkan yang lain hidup karena realitas sosial yang plural. Di sini toleransi adalah hadiah dari penguasa dan setiap saat dapat dicabut kembali jika kaum minoritas melanggar sejumlah ketentuan. Toleransi aktif atau autentik mengiakan hak hidup atau keberadaan, kebebasan dan kehendak yang lain sebagai yang lain untuk berkembang. Prinsip toleransi ini sesuai dengan kondisi masyarakat demokratis dan plural kontemporer yang diwarnai potensi konflik lantaran perbedaan konsep good life. Tulisan ini akan menunjukkan bahwa konsep toleransi autentik merupakan konsep yang cocok dengan kondisi masyarakat post-sekular yang ditandai dengan menguatnya peran publik agama- agama. Abstract

The phenomenon of dualism in practising the faith among Catholics who converted from Sumbanese ethnic religion (Marapu) is a real challenge faced by the Catholic Church in Sumba. Such dualism is transparent in the practices of using simultaneously both Catholic and Marapu rites in the popular religiosity of Sumbanese Catholics. Both Catholic priests and Marapu ritual leaders are asked by the people, on different occassions, to perform rituals for their benefit. These two kinds of ritual leaders are equally considered as mediators of communication between human beings and the supernatural world. Such a practice reveals a deep encounter between Catholic and Sumbanese ethnic religion regarding the form, direction and means of communication between humans and supernatural beings. The author’s fieldwork at Weepangali in the district of Sumba Barat Daya, from January to August 2013, reveals a new concept and understanding of mediation, that is a mixture between a Catholic concept and a Marapu one. Some supernatural figures in Marapu religion are equated with those in Catholic devotions. This new understanding, however, is not formally and institutionally recognized in either the Marapu or Catholic hierarchies, but rather found more informally and spontaneously in the religious experience of Sumbanese Catholics. This phenomenon indicates the strong mutual influence between Catholic and Marapu experience, after a prolonged and ongoing encounter. Abstract

Immanuel Kant membangun filsafat kritisnya untuk menjawab pandangan skeptis David Hume mengenai kepastian pengetahuan manusia dan mencoba mendamaikan dua pendekatan yang berbeda terhadap pengetahuan dan tindakan, yakni rasionalisme dan empirisme. Dalam karyanya berjudul Aenesidemus, Gottlob Ernst Schulze mempertanyakan klaim Kant bahwa skeptisisme Hume telah terjawab melalui filsafat kritisnya. Artikel ini pertama-tama membahas teks Aenesidemus dengan memberikan perhatian khusus pada kritik Schulze terhadap pandangan Karl Leonhard Reinhold mengenai ‘fakultas’ representasi dan kegagalan Kant dalam membedakan antara sebab dan syarat pengetahuan. Dalam tanggapannya terhadap karya Schulze ini, Fichte memperlihatkan kesalahpahaman Schulze atas pokok-pokok penting dalam filsafat kritis sekaligus menunjukkan arah filsafat kritis yang hendak ditempuhnya sendiri. Di satu sisi, filsafat kritis memang menuai polemik dengan berbagai kritik dan tanggapan yang mengubah arah filsafat Barat sendiri. Akan tetapi, di sisi lain, seluruh rangkaian peristiwa ini justru memperlihatkan sebuah dialog dalam filsafat sendiri sebagai usaha untuk menemukan fondasi kuat dan mantap atas klaim-klaimnya. Dialog ini menunjukkan keterbukaan filsafat terhadap berbagai bentuk kebenaran yang terus menerus disingkapkan. Abstract

Abstract: This article illustrates the background of. and reasons for, the Reformation, the basic contours of Luther’s theology and the Reformation movement he initiated, and the influence of the Reformation movement on the present situation. A brief description of the post-Reformation inter-Christian Church controversies for approximately 400 years is also presented, highlighting the fact that the theology of the time was unaware of the contextual influence of a text as the deepest reason for the controversy. The hermeneutical consciousness of the twentieth century led theology to overcome various inter-Christian Church controversies by showing that different and seemingly contradictory formulas could express the same truth, provided that each was placed in its original context. The author proposes as an example of the influence of the events of the Reformation on the present situation, the very important issue of religious freedom in situations such as Indonesia with a variety of religions and beliefs. In concluding the author gives advice on how different Christian Churches can learn from each other, so that they remain active in renewing the Church according to the ecclesia semper reformanda principle. Abstrak: Artikel ini menggambarkan latar belakang dan alasan peristiwa Reformasi, warna dasar teologi Luther dan gerakan Reformasi yang dibangunnya, serta pengaruh gerakan Reformasi terhadap situasi dewasa ini. Deskripsi singkat kontroversi antar-Gereja Kristen pasca-Reformasi selama kurang lebih 400 tahun juga dimuat di sini dengan menampilkan kenyataan bahwa teologi waktu itu tidak menyadari pengaruh konteks atas suatu teks sebagai alasan terdalam lahirnya kontroversi itu. Kesadaran hermeneutis membuat teologi pada abad XX itu sanggup mengatasi pelbagai kontroversi antar-Gereja Kristen dengan membuktikan, rumusan yang berbeda dan bertentangan bisa menyatakan kebenaran yang sama, asalkan masing-masing ditempatkan dalam konteksnya yang asli. Sebagai suatu contoh pengaruh peristiwa Reformasi atas situasi dewasa ini, pengarang mengemukakan kebebasan beragama yang sangat penting dalam situasi seperti di Indonesia dengan anekaragam agama dan kepercayaan. Pada tempat terakhir penulis memberikan anjuran tentang bagaimana Gereja-gereja Kristen yang berbeda bisa saling belajar, agar mereka tetap aktif membarui Gereja seturut prinsip ecclesia semper reformanda. Abstract

Abstract This text describes the connection between the social sciences and contextual theology. The social sciences investigate the way people relate in society via various institutions and structures, which facilitate relationships in the economic, cultural and political spheres.The social sciences also investigate the way human beings relate to nature for two reasons, namely to defend themselves against the power of nature, and also to enable them to benefit from nature. Systematic theology studies the relationship between God and humanity in light of revelation and faith. Contextual theology investigates to what extent human institutions and structures, interpersonal relationships and the relationship between humanity and nature, become a help or a hindrance to expressing faith in the Lord, and to listening to what is said by God in God’s revelation to humankind. Abstrak: Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan hubungan antara ilmu-ilmu sosial dan teologi kontekstual. Ilmu-ilmu sosial menyelidiki hubungan manusia dengan manusia dalam masyarakat melalui berbagai institusi dan struktur yang memungkinkan dan memudahkan hubungan itu dalam ekonomi, kebudayaan, dan politik. Ilmu-ilmu sosial juga meneliti hubungan manusia dengan alam dalam kaitannya dengan dua tujuan, yaitu mempertahankan diri terhadap kekuatan alam, dan memanfaatkan alam untuk keperluan hidupnya. Di sini teknologi dan ekonomi memainkan peranan yang menentukan. Teologi sistematik meneliti berbagai aspek relasi Tuhan dengan manusia melalui wahyu serta relasi manusia dengan Tuhan melalui iman. Teologi kontekstual meneliti sejauh mana institusi dan struktur yang dibangun manusia, baik dalam relasi antar-manusia maupun dalam relasi manusia dan alam, menjadi fasilitas atau hambatan baginya dalam menyatakan iman kepada Tuhan, dan dalam mendengarkan apa yang disampaikan Tuhan dalam wahyu-Nya kepada manusia. Abstract

This paper challenge to raise the understanding that “the Bible is anti LGBT”. Hermeneutical examination of the six passages or texts shows that in the Bible there are anti-LGBT texts, but there are also pro-LGBT texts. Then the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, often used as “proof” that the Bible is anti-LGBT, can also be interpreted as opposites. Finally there is a hermeneutical discussion about the relationship of religion and science, culture and human rights, and concrete proposals regarding the pastoral actions of the church against LGBT people.
