Abstract

The Islamic experience in the modern world reconstitutes the relation between human and God on the basis of the fundamental authority of the holy Quran. Mosque as a symbol, this monument to political power contains some of the most basic contradictions thats characterize Muslim societies in the modern world. A similar distinction applies to the to the morning officialy attributed to the mosque, it maybe “open”, “toleran”, “cosmopolitan”, and “modern” Muslim reformers, embattled governments against increasingly militant oppositional groups which have adopted Islam as an overarching instrument of discourse and struggle. Muslim reformers, activists, and militants nearly always say that theirs is a “movement”, a ‘current” which is still in the process of gestation and evolution. Emancipatory politics is concerned, above all, with themes of justice, equality, and participation, the very same themes that most Muslim reformers are in fact concerned with. Islamic experience involves a redefination of identity in a world which has become homogenized by the globalizing process of modernism The Islamic experience is therefore a call for an emancipatory politics which means justice where there is none, a more egalitarian distribution of wealth and a more democratic system of decision making.

Abstract

This article aims to know and critically analyze the ethical responsibilities of Levinas. He gives a new concept of responsibility. For him, ethics is the first philosophy. The ethics of Levinas's responsibilities must be understood in a metaphysical aspect. The research method used is literature research using hermeneutics method. The essence of Levinas’s responsibility: responsibility as an existential fact, nonnormative, for the others, substitutional, the essential structure of subjectivity, a basis for existence, the responsibility of humanizing himself, and responsibilities make me unique from others. The ethics of Levinas's responsibilities have two characters: concrete and asymmetric.

Abstract

The birth of postmodernism can not be separated from the notion of modernism. The view of modernism assumes that the truth of science is absolute and objective, meaning that there is no human value. Here is the birth of a new idea of postmodernism which is one of figures are Jean Francouis Lyotard, postmodernism is a continuation and correction of modernism to provide a new thought and solution in his view of science. For postmodernism, science is not objective but subjective and the interpretation of man himself, so the truth is relative. Postmodernism can not be separated by its weakness and whether it is relevant to today’s life, so postmodernism adds to the acquisition of knowledge which can be accepted by its existence.

Abstract

Terrorism is one of the most terrible crimes. Various efforts have been conducted by the government, however, until now terrorism is still a serious issue. As a human behavior, the crime of terrorism is one thing that can be analized from various perspectives, as well as from the existentialism philosophy framework of Gabriel H. Marcel as described in this article. In relation to the analysis of terrorist behavior in Indonesia, it can be concluded that acts of terrorism, espe- cially those committed by suicide bombings, are ontologically behavioral parts of human chosen efforts to achieve "Being", which also involves meeting between "I" and "You". Regardless of any deed done (in terms of material deeds), in Marcel's perspective, such deeds are formally examples of "human" acts be- cause of the "procedure" passed by the terrorist according to the phases pro- posed by Marcel. Although it may be a barbaric act, but judging from the formal side of the decision he chooses, the perpetrator of terror is the actor who attains "Being" because he finds the presence of "Thou" in the decisions he takes.

Abstract

Legend is a folktale that has a historical root or ground. It is interesting to investigate a legend since it is closely related with culture. Banyuwangi has a very nice legend that tells about the origin of its name. The legend is told in three different versions and each of them shares the same ending by the death of the woman in each story caused by her own husband.Suspiciously, a legend may be loaded with the gender construction that influences the society. It pictures a tangible differentiation between the image and the role from women and men. This paper aims to compares the three versions of the legend and analyses them using feminism point of view. Feminism movement nowadays is widening its movement to investigate the text which is suspected to support the patriarchy power. This paper uses literature research as its method and meets the result as follows: 1) In the legend’s first version, woman was stereotyped as the domestic worker, 2) In the legend’s second version, woman was portrayed as the second sex, 3) In the legend’s third version, woman is seen as a sexual object. Keywords: Banyuwangi legends, gender construction, feminism.
