Abstract

This article aims to explore the function and style of women’s leadership. It deals with a case study of Head of Masaran Village, Banyuates, Sampang. In this research the writer employs qualitative approach and has formulated two main questions, are: first, how is the function of women’s leadership as the village head?; second, how is the leadership style of thiswoman as thevillage head? The research results in two conclusions, are; first, the woman’s leadership does not function effecttively as she deals merely with administrative aspects, while the top-management functions are performed mostly by her husband. This matter cannot, however, be separated from gender bias, patriarchal culture, and the lack of ability of the village head. Second, the woman’s leadership style can be categorized as laissez fairestyle. This is because as a leaderthe woman does not fully participate in the implementation of village’s agenda and activities for any responsiblity is handled by her husband.

Abstract

This article is a literature study on the concept of state of al-Ma Wardi. In this context, his thoughts on the relationship between the ahl al-aqd wa al-hall with the caliph and people are  interesting matter to be explored. The focus of the articleis how the relationship between the leader and his people should be. The result of this study indicates that the relation between a caliph and the people is a social contract, i.e. common agreement to performduties and obligations based on mutual relation. Therefore, the people should obey their caliph and at the same time a caliph has the duty to protect his people and responsible for them as their leader. Social contract theory of al-Ma> Wardi, which has been written in the 11th century AD,  has inspired political theory of a number of Western thinkers such as Hubbert Languet (1519-1581 AD), Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679 AD), and John Locke (1632-1604 AD).

Abstract

This study is conducted based on the weaknesses of political parties. It is questioning the ideology of political parties which tends to be less operational, undemocratic and – to some extent – centralized management, and the absence of accountability. Using qualitative approach, the study findsthat there are two main typologies, according to santri (students of Islamic boarding schools), namely pragmatic parties and parties of interests. Moreover, related to the positioning of the ideology of political parties, based onstudents’ preferences, the students grounded their information on mass media and social media. Moreover, ideology and value system are not important aspects adopted by the students in their political preferences. To them politicians are merely groundless political actorswho put less effort to fight for the sake of people’s interests. In addition, the students argue that politicians put most emphasis merely on their party and themselves.
