Abstract

This article departs from the author's interest in answering the question 'why most corruptors are Muslims?' Then, the author decides to make Islam, corruption and the political-bureaucratic structure in Indonesia as the theme of the discussion. There are two things that cause the emergence or the growth of corruption in Indonesia namely; first, the bureaucratic-political structure and the second: the understanding of the values of goodness (Islamic value). The political and bureaucratic structures have the most significant influence not only in Indonesia but also globally (Yaw M. Mensah: 2012). Beside, a lack of understanding about Islamic rules also causes why some Muslims like politicians, are trapped in corruption cases. Therefore, there are two solutions that can be put forward namely; firstly, the restoration of political structure and bureaucracy, and secondly, anticipate with the understanding of Islam wholly and integrity (kaffah)

Abstract

This article aims at describing the values of pluralism and its basic principles. Multiculturalism as the doctrine of common culture provides space for achievement of two needs: (1) the maintenance of diversity and integration at the level of community; (2) sustainability of unity at the level of the nation in order to achieve the goals as a nation. Multiculturalism approach is an alternative approach to politics of identity as well as an alternative to conflict resolution. Multiculturalism with pro-existence approach is conflict resolution strategy which is able to transform the tension in democracy and plurality into a new social order which gives chance for the presence of a productive interaction among diverse identities and the same time provides social integration to assure the sustainability of the principles of democracy and human rights.

Abstract

Even civil society was one requirement for the process of democratization, but it does not mean the existence of civil society automatically have a constructive impact to the democratization process. The assumption will be verifiable through qualitative analysis with descriptive analytic method. Experience of Indonesia, Philippines and South Korea showed that the changes of social-democratic politics, were determined by the role of civil society. However, the findings of this study indicate that proliferation of civil society in these countries has led to disagreement among the elements of civil society that have a negative impact for democratization. Thus, civil society can be a trouble maker for the process of democratization.

Abstract

This article describes the involvement of Majelis Zikir Tathma’innulqulub (MZT) in the local leaders election. Although this particular case occurred in the Medan city, it’s also explain in general the majlis dhikr phenomenon in Indonesia’s political practice. This phenomenon is interesting since the involvement of majlis dhikr is uncommon in the political world—as commonly known, sufism possess different (spiritual) orientation. The involvement can be best described as a political brand of sufism: in ritual and practice in supporting one of the local candidate. Thus, it describes the ritual of “yasinan and dhikr” from the beginning of election until the end as a “political ritual”. In addition, MZT also serves as a political marketing—spiritual adviser as well as political consultant; while in the practical aspect, MZT involved in hidden and public campaign. However, the candidate supported by MZT was lost. This fact explains that political brand of sufism has no significant influence in politics practice.

Abstract

This article is a literature study on the concept of state of al-Ma Wardi. In this context, his thoughts on the relationship between the ahl al-aqd wa al-hall with the caliph and people are  interesting matter to be explored. The focus of the articleis how the relationship between the leader and his people should be. The result of this study indicates that the relation between a caliph and the people is a social contract, i.e. common agreement to performduties and obligations based on mutual relation. Therefore, the people should obey their caliph and at the same time a caliph has the duty to protect his people and responsible for them as their leader. Social contract theory of al-Ma> Wardi, which has been written in the 11th century AD,  has inspired political theory of a number of Western thinkers such as Hubbert Languet (1519-1581 AD), Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679 AD), and John Locke (1632-1604 AD).
