Abstract

This research aims at finding the influence of Contextual Teaching and Learning toward the students’ learning achievement. The subject of the study was 25 eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 9 Palu. The research was conducted in two cycles through the steps of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The researcher collected the data by using observation sheets, field notes, questionnaire, portfolio, and test. The data were analyzed quantitative and qualitatively. The result of achievement test showed that in cycle 1 there were only 17 students (68%) who got score greater than 65, whereas in cycle 2 there were 21 students (84%) who got score greater than 65. The action was stopped after the third meeting in cycle 2, because the result of students’ learning achievement had met the criteria of success. Based on the result of data analysis, the application of Contextual Teaching and Learning was effective to develop the reading skill.

Abstract

This research aimed to: (1) test the difference between the learning outcomes of two instructional strategies: they were think pair share and direct instruction, (2) test the difference between the learning result of the students with low motivation and those with high motivation, and (3) test the interaction between the learning strategies and the motivation to achieve towards learning result. This research used factorial 2x2 version non-equivalent control group design. The subjects of the research were the eleventh grade social science students at SMA Negeri 3, SMA Negeri 4, and SMA Negeri 7 in the academic year 2013/2014. The subjects were determined through cluster random sampling. Data were collected through pre test, post test, and motivation to achieve instruments which were analyzed in inferential statistic by using variance analysis with the significance level of 0.05. The results of the research showed that (1) there was a difference between the groups of students who were given treatments with cooperative learning strategy of think pair share and direct instruction, (2) there was a difference in the learning result of the students who have high and low motivation, and (3) there was a significant interaction between learning strategy, motivation to achieve and learning result.

Abstract

The test is one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways that can be done to take pictures of students' progress in the cognitive domain. Therefore, the existence of a quality test device is a necessity so that the students' cognitive abilities may be disclosed. The quality of a test device can be seen to perform qualitative and quantitative analysis. Qualitative analysis is an analysis that is performed before the tests given to participants to test their compatibility with aspects of material, construction and language, while the quantitative analysis can be done by using classical test theory and item response theory.

Abstract

This research was designed as a collaborative action research. The subject of this research was 24 EFL students of Accounting Department (AK1) at the first semester of 2015/2016 academic year. The action research was conducted in two cycles where each cycle consisted of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Each cycle consists of three meetings. Data was collected through observation sheets and field-notes, marking scheme and students’ writing performance during the implementation of action. The findings of the research show that Process-based writing strategy was effective to improve students’ writing skills in descriptive paragraphs. The effect of this strategy was supported by the classical percentage of students’ from 13 students (52%) who got scores equal or greater than 70 in cycle 1 to become 21 students (84%) who got scores equal or greater than 70 in cycle 2. In addition, Process-based process as a teaching strategy in teaching writing skills was effective to improve students’ writing skills.

Abstract

  Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi karakteristik sekolah efektif berdasarkan indikator untuk peningkatan mutu pendidikan. Berdasarkan permasalahan, hasil dan pembahasan penelitian dapat dibuat beberapa kesimpulan yang berkaitan dengan karakteristik sekolah efektif sebagai faktor determinan peningkatan mutu pendidikan pada sekolah dasar di Kota Palu. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa karakteristik sekolah efektif berdasarkan indikator (1) administrasi dan manajemen sekolah untuk peningkatan mutu pendidikan; (2) kepemimpinan kepala sekolah dan kepengawasan; (3) kurikulum dan pemebelajaran ditandai dengan inovasi pembelajaran yang mampu mengoptimalkan seluruh sumber belajar yang dimiliki; (4) organisasi kelembagaan pendukung untuk peningkatan mutu pendidikan, yaitu (a) pembagian tugas dan kewenangan yang jelas, (b) ada unti penjaminan mutu; (5) sarana; (6) ketenagaan untuk peningkatan mutu pendidikan yaitu memilki jumlah guru yang cukup, memiliki kompetensi mengajar sesuai keahliannya dan berkualifikasi pendidikan minimal S1 serta memilki akta mengajar IV; (7) pembiayaan dan pendanaan pendidikan untuk peningkatan mutu pendidikan; (8) kesiswaan/peserta didik untuk peningkatan mutu pendidikan, pembinaan kecerdasan emosional dan spritual (ESQ) yang intensif; (9) peranserta masyarakatt untuk peningkatan mutu pendidikan, yaitu sekolah yang melibatkan masyarakat dalam pengembangan sekolah.

Abstract

The aims of the study were to improve the EFL learners’ English vocabulary mastery through the implementation of mind mapping. The study employed the Classroom Action Research Design. The subject of the study was 49 undergraduate EFL learners at the Faculty of Economic at Tadulako University in the academic year of 2014/2015. The data was collected through three research instruments: 1) vocabulary test, 2) observation sheet, and 3) field notes. The result of study shows that using Mind Mapping technique can improve the EFL learners’ vocabulary mastery. This is proved by the improvement of the EFL learners’ vocabulary test score results. In the first cycle, the average of the learners’ who fulfill the criteria of success is 55.1% which means that only 27 learners from 49 samples can pass the minimum standard score. In the second cycle, the result of the test is proved to increase into 85.7% which means that 42 of 49 learners have been successful to fulfill the criteria of success. Based on the result of the data analysis, it can be concluded that the EFL learners’ vocabulary mastery has been improved through the application of Mind Mapping Technique in the teaching of English.

Abstract

Developing Writing Skill through Picture Sequences at SMP Negeri 9 Palu, Central Sulawesi. This research aims at investigating the procedure and the effectiveness of picture sequences in teaching writing to the students. The students were trained to write recount texts based on picture sequences. The subject of research was grade VII C students of SMPN 9 Palu, the academic year 2013/2014 which consists of 35 students. The research took common steps of the action research; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. This research was held in two cycles, each cycle consisted of three meetings. The researcher used observation sheet, field notes, and tests to collect the data. The result of the data analysis showed that the application of pictures sequences in teaching writing recount text is effective in cycle 2. It was proved by the number of students who got the minimum standard of individual learning achievement (65) in cycle 1 which was obtained by 13 students or 37,14 %. In cycle 2, there were 29 students or 82,86 % who have met the criterion of individual learning achievement. The percentage (82,86 %) was greater than the classical achievement. In cycle 2 criteria of the achievement in content, organization, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanic, have been achieved. The score is greater than 65.

Abstract

This research aims at investigating how to improve the speaking skill at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Palu through Problem-Based Learning. This research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) where the subject was 22 students. The researcher and her collaborator collected the data by using observation checklists, field notes, test, and questionnaire. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results showed that the application of problem-based learning techniques could improve the students’ speaking skill. In cycle 1, there were 10 students successful in speaking test and the rest were not successful. The group achievement was 45, 45% and the mean score was 67, 36%. The researcher continued to cycle 2 because the result of the speaking test in cycle 1 did not meet the criteria of achievement (50%). In cycle 2, the result revealed that there were 18 students who were successful and there were only 4 students who were not successful. The group achievement was 81, 81% and the mean score was 78, 27%. The research has been completed in cycle 2 because the result showed that the criteria of success 50% have been achieved.
