Abstract

It is clearly seen that totemism is really attached to the ethnic life of the Asmat. This is because the Asmat is always related to ancestor spirits like performing rituals to wish for their bless and protection. The most important thing to communicate to the spirits is the statue of the ancestors. The Asmat uses animal symbols for they hope that the power and goodness of the totem could be transfered and used in their everyday life. Other than the animal and plant design, there are also other type of totem like human and other things which have symbolic meanings for the Asmat.

Abstract

The Process of vessels making in Mansinam site was not far too different with other places in Indonesia: using clay as the basic material. The vessel making was a woman’s work, started from clay gathering to firing process. Based on the observation of the edge shape, it is predicted that the vessels found in Mansinam Island belongs to the type of pot. The observation on the core shows that on the process of making, the firing was opened and not spread evenly. Pot was used for cooking and keeping food. The vessels from Mansinan Island has spread vast through trade and barter to Wandamen coastal area, Biak Numfor islands, Bird’s Head Peninsula coastal areas and Raja Ampat Islands.

Abstract

The face is one of the major variables in determining the biological characteristics of a population in the identification effort of human skeletal remains. This is not only important in the field of forensic anthropology but also the field of bioarchaeology. The purpose of this study is to describe the variation of facial angle in some of the world population. The method applied is anthropometry. The study material is the skull of nine world populations of Europe, North Africa, Subsahara Africa, South America, Inuit, Australomelanesia, Indonesia, Polynesia and China. The results showed that among the population tested, Australomelanesoid, Polynesian, Indonesian and African Subsahara populations had a prognathic face both on the even face, as well as the alveolar and facial projection. In contrast, the population groups of China, Europe, Inuit and North Africa are population groups that have faces of orthognath.
