Abstract

Reading skill plays an important role in English learning process, especially when student have to deal with TOEFL Exam which includes reading and writing skill. The writer observed that the process of comprehending a reading text was still a serious problem for the students. The writer applied a qualitative method in this research with descriptive approach. The subject of the study was the first semester students class E of Universitas Prima Indonesia Medan. The instrument of data collecting was multiple choice test. The mean score of the students? in comprehending narrative text was 77. It shown that their comprehension narrative text was average to good. There was 12 students (48%) was classified as Excellent, 12 students (48%) was classified as Good and there was 1 students (4%) was classified as Average whereas no student (0%) was  classified as poor to comprehending narrative text. Therefore, the writer hopes that the other English lecturer should always try to create an interesting text and media for their teaching.

Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating the effect of metacognitive strategy on the English Learners? Vocabulary Mastery at FKIP Nommensen Pematangsiantar. This research was conducted by applying quantitative research design. The data were taken from English Learners in the classroom. This research is conducted by applying experimental research design. In this research, there are two procedures which is made to collect the data, there are treatment and test. For the first step the writer gave the treatment for each group. Experimental group got three times treatment by using metacognitive strategy and control group got 3 times treatment also by using conventional method. The test. is a test conducted after conducting the treatment. After explaining the material and giving the exercise both of the groups are given the same test to know the result of the treatment. The scores will be analyzed to see the differences of the group.

Abstract

This paper intends to analyze one of them Sura in Al-Qur?an. This study was conducted in Sura Ali Imran. The source of the data was taken from the translation of Sura Ali Imran. They were contained in the verses of Sura Ali Imran, and then analyzed the kinds, functions, and the reasons of using metaphor. The kinds are refers to Lakoff and Johnson that divided the metaphor are arranged in order according to which of Halliday?s three metafunctions. Then, the reason is based on Wahab?s four contextual reasons. Based on the data analysis, it was found that there are two kinds of metaphor used in Sura Ali Imran, 5 verses of explicit metaphor and 10 verses of implicit metaphor. The second finding is there are 9 functions used from 13 functions as the breakdown of Halliday?s three metafunction. The next finding found that the reason why the metaphor is used in Sura Ali Imran are because of four contextual reasons. Therefore, it can be concluded that, some messages of the Al-Qur?an in Sura Ali Imran have a stressing point which is delivered in more beautiful words in implicit metaphor that make the readers have a deeply understanding toward the message.

Abstract

Peer feedback is the comment or advice from equal partner, which can help the writer to improve their product of the writing. The aim of this study was to find out the types of peer feedback most frequently given by students in reviewing their classmates? essay. The total participants of this study were 178 students of English education department. The data of this study was taken from peer feedback given by students in reviewing essay, which applied in the class of writing. The design of this study was descriptive quantitative. The peer feedback given by students in reviewing their classmates? essay was analyzed and categorized based on Hyland and Hyland?s classification: praise, criticism, and suggestion. As the result, suggestion was most frequently given by students in reviewing essay because most of the students gave constructive comment or asking the improvement as their feedback rather than gave praise and criticism. It was seen that the total suggestion which given by students to the classmates was 208 feedback. Then, 108 praise was given which expressed the positive comments or positive impression, though there is some empty praise without constructive comments. 107 criticisms were also given by students in expressing their negative comment or dissatisfaction with the essay written by their classmates. In addition, some combinations of the feedback were also given in reviewing essay.  There are 30 combinations of praise and criticism, 51 combinations of praise and suggestion, and 25 combinations of criticism and suggestion. In conclusion, the reviewers expressed positive and negative comments, positive and constructive comments, the negative and constructive comments in same time.

Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating the improvement of EFL learners? achievement in writing descriptive paragraph in Indonesia. Therefore, the moethodology conducted in this study was action research. The techniques of collecting data were documentation (writing test) and questionnaire for quantitative data, and observation and interview for the qualitative data. The result shows that the score mean of EFL learners was improved from cycle 1 to cycle 2 which was 66.28 to 87.00 respectively. Furthermore, the result of questionnaire shows that most of EFL learners were very interested and enjoying learning writing by using realia. Moreover, from the observation and interview, EFL learners said that realia is very good and enjoyable to improve their achievements in descriptive writing. Therefore, relia should be implemented to teach English in Indonesia not only to teaching writing but also to teach other skills such as listening, speaking and reading

Abstract

In non-formal classroom during their waiting time in transit, refugees often found it difficult to have dynamic teamwork with others from diverse sociocultural. Things considered small stuffs for some turned out to be a problematic issue to others. Their various background; home countries, ethnicities, previous socioeconomic status added to the exclusion and specific group connection with tendency of being unsettled when they were obligated to mix with their fellows outside their comfort group. Even though most of these people have experienced in moving around from one country into another, their marginal life was not a much of help to their socialization with people outside of their community. Promoting multicultural education which values diversity and includes the perspectives of a variety of cultural groups on a regular basis took longer time to decrease prejudice, tolerate changing habits and eliminate gender bias.

Abstract

The term of language attitude is the feeling how people can respond to another language. This research explored the language attitude of Indonesian workers in Cruise Ship Holland America Line (HAL). It was aimed to investigate the characteristic of language attitude by Indonesian workers? especially in food and beverage department. The research use theory from Garvin and Mathiot (1968) there have three characteristics of language attitudes, language loyalty, pride of language, awareness of the language norm. This research conducted with descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study are the utterances of Indonesian workers in Cruise Ship Holland America Line (HAL). The source of data of this study was ten Indonesian workers at the food and beverage department. Interview was used to obtain the data. The result found that from ten participants, eight Indonesian workers showed negative language attitudes. The others have positive toward the Indonesian language. Realization of positive language attitudes influenced by friendship and place domain. Meanwhile, there were loyal to the Indonesian language by an informal situation to avoid negative thinking and respect each other among workers.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to know more about  the complete description of Local Wisdom on the Use of the Minangkabu Proverb Meaning Satire by the Minangkabau Community in Medan. This research uses descriptive qualitative method which can be interpreted as a problem solving procedure that is investigated by describing the state of the object of research at the present time based on the facts that appear or as they are.The sample of this research limited  to 8 (eight) Minangkabau informants from the four Kotamatsum Kelurahan. After conducting this research, it was found that the use of the Minangkabau Proverb having meaningful satire by the Minangkabau Society in Medan was more dominant in the Social and Cultural context. This shows that the Minangkabau Society in social interaction with each other always uses a sentence that is decorated, especially the use of the proverbial Minangkabau meaning satire which aims at providing input, criticism and advice in accordance with religious aspects, customs and tradition which are held firmly by the Minangkabau community.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the ideational meaning on traditional wedding ceremony Horja Haroan Boru Tapanuli Selatan (HHBTS) and to elaborate the reason for the use of verbal components from three side namely Mora, Kahanggi and Anak boru. The analysis of this studyused qualitative analysis, and the theory used was from M.A.K. Halliday (1985, 1994 and 2004). This study found that the language being used by three participants (Kahanggi, Mora and Anakboru) namely; Kahanggi is dominantly used material activities, Mora and anakboru are dominantly used Mental and behavioral activities. Moreover, these three participants shows their position while Kahanggi as the host of the ceremony, anakboru as the supporter who take the responsibility in preparing the stuff in every steps of ceremony, while mora has the power to give advice, suggestion, permission and rejection in that ceremony

Abstract

The study was conducted to describe the students? translation use in English Foreign Language Learning (EFL). The subject of the study was 100 students English Educational Study Program Languages and Arts Faculty, Universitas Negeri Medan. 40 Students were selected as the sample. The instruments used to collect data were questionnaire and interview. The data analysis indicated that English Department Students as foreign language learners used translation activities during their learning process such as, to comprehend reading text, to write English texts, to speak English, to understand vocabularies, to understand English grammar, to understand idioms and phrases and to understand the instructions of teachers.  More attention should be given than to help the students? skills and understanding through the translation process.
