Abstract

This research aimed to know by using Card Sort can improve students? vocabulary at students of MTsN Parepare. Generally the use of media as teaching aid mainly aimed at increasing the teaching process to be more motivating and interesting. This research was conducted in MTsN Parepare. Researcher used quantitative study in the form of Pre ? Experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. There are independent variable and dependent variable. Random sampling is the technique to take the sample and VIII.5 is the samples which consist with 26 students. The instrument that used is test, observation and documentation. The result calculation of mean score pre-test of students was 52,31 and mean score post-test of students was 65,57. The result of this research showed there was significant different in statistical analysis where the statistical t-test (2,7) was higher than t-table (1,708) with degree freedom (df = N-1) 25. The researcher concluded the using of Card Sort is able to improve students? vocabulary. From 15 questionnaires, the students answered very positive. Based on the liker scale that the students were very positive in learning English by using Card Sort. It means that the Card Sort media makes students have positive response toward in learning vocabulary. The cumulative percentage on the fifteen items of the positive statements questionnaire was 96,62, while the cumulative score that they got the questionnaire was 1633. The researcher concluded the using of Card Sort is able to improve students? vocabulary at MTsN Parepare.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was positively to find out whether applying two stay two stray technique by using picture series to improve students? speaking skill at the second grade in MAN 2 Parepare. The results of this research, the benefit for the teacher and students. The teacher will be conscious that it is important to apply the technique in teaching. The students can enjoy the lesson so they can be easier to express their ideas and also confidence to speak by using the gesture. The subject of this research is XI MIA 1 class which is consisted of 27 students. The sample was taken by using purposive sampling. The design in this research was pre-experimental with pre-test and post-test design. The student did the pre-test, got the treatment and did the post-test. It aimed to know whether applying two stay two stray technique by using picture series can improve students? speaking skill. The result in this research was indicated that the improvement of the students? speaking skill. It was indicated by the students? mean score of post-test (72.26) was greater than pre-test (44.46). Even, for the level significant (p) 5% and df = 26, and the value of table is 1.706, while the value of t-test is 18.34. It means that the t-test value is greater than t-table (2.29 ? 1.706). Thus, it can be concluded that the students? speaking skill is significantly better after getting the treatment. So, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Keywords: Speaking Skill, Two Stay Two Stray and Picture Series.

Abstract

Abstract This research studied about the kinds of propaganda expressions and what messages are conveyed through the propaganda expressions in Angel and Demon novel by Dan Brown. The research used the propaganda theory by Harold Laswell, that divided in four kinds; agitation, integration, horizontally and vertically propaganda. In the methodology of research, the writer used descriptive qualitative method and intrinsic and extrinsic approach. In this research, the writer found there are some expressions that contain agitation propaganda, integration propaganda, horizontally propaganda and vertically propaganda that could be giving influence to the reader. In general, an expression of propaganda in ?Angel and Demon? novel by Dan Brown wants to change the mindset of people towards their views to the brotherhood of the ?Illuminat?i. The novel attempts to explain the history of the birth of a conflict between the Christian and the ?Illuminati? and how much influence they had been, the author packed them into a dialogue delivered by characters that are in the novel in which there are propaganda expressions. The implication of this research as an information to the public that a novel is not only use full as a reading at leisure or entertainment, but the novel can also be functioning as media of propaganda. Abstract

This research was designed to improve the students` reading comprehension through Think Talk Write at the first grade students of SMKN 1 Lasusua. The research problem was ?How can think talk write improve students? reading comprehension at class X TKJ of SMKN 1 Lasusua??.The designed of this research was collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR).In this research, there were two cycles and the first cycle was not success because the result of the students? test did not fulfill the KKM, so there was the next cycle. The second cycle was success because the result of the  student test achieved the KKM mandatory by the school. In addition, this research must get 70 score to fulfill the Minimum Mastery Criterion ? Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM). It could be seen in the average score was 68.6 in the first cycle and there were only 17 students from 35 students got score greater than or equal 70. This score increased to be 74.77 in the second cycle there were 26 from 35 students got score greater than or equal 70. It means that this research was successful.        Reflecting to the findings and discussion of this research, the conclusion was think talk write strategy could improve the students` comprehension in reading at the first grade students of SMKN 1 Lasusua and the researcher suggests some points. Firstly, think talk write is a strategy that can be employed in improving students` comprehension in reading. Secondly, She suggests that English teacher can apply think talk write as a technique that can be used in teaching English to all skills, especially reading.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to analyse and describe the process of improving students? listening skill for eleventh grade students of MAN 1 Majene, West Sulawesi Province through watching English movies. The subject of this research is XI Agama 2 Class that consisted of 16 students. The method used in this study is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which the writer works collaboratively with the English teacher. The results in this study indicate that there was improvement of the students? skill listening. Most of the students gradually gained good scores at the end of the cycle The data was collected from a questionnaire, observation note of performance, pre-test and posttest. The study was conducted with cycle model through the steps of planning, conducting, observation, and reflection. The results of this study show a significant relationship between students' learning by English movie with delay subtitle related to their listening skills as shown in their improvement of post test and positive responses of students than english movie with not delay. The questionnaire shows that more than 75% students felt easy to understand listening materials from native speakers. Consequently, it was suggested that teaching learning process using English movie with English subtitle is recommended into learning process to improve students' listening skills in English language classroom. In conclusion, watching English movie can improve students listening skill.

Abstract

Online Games are popular for Indonesian teenagers, and one of them is the Clash of Clans (COC). Each online game has specific terms. Those are known as jargon. This study is aimed to find jargons of Clash of Clans used by the teenagers. It is a qualitative research using descriptive method. The result shows that there are seventeen jargons used by three teenagers. They are Archer Troops, Barbarian Troops, Wall Level 3, Wall Level 1, Town Hall 3 Starts, Mortar, Golem, Hogs, Wars, Builder, Hidden Tesla, Clan Castle, Giant, Healer, and Elixir. Those jargons are used in the other contexts, out of that online game. the players use this jargon language by considering the things in the real life with all of the things in Clash of Clans. So the jargon language from the game is accidentally said by teenagers in their real life context.

Abstract

This study was aimed to see the writing ability development at SMA Negeri 11 Sidrap. The objective of this study is to get the empirical data of the differences between students? score of writing test who were and were not taught by using Video Critics strategy. The population of this research consists of 56 students. The sample of the research were class XI IPS as the experimental group which consists of 17 students and XI MIPA as the control group which consists of 39 students. The research method used in this research was quasi-experimental with nonequivalent control group design. The data was collected through pretest and posttest. It aimed to know whether Video Critics strategy in teaching writing can develop students? writing ability.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to get information about comparing between total physical response and silent way to develop speaking students? ability at second grade senior high school 1 liliriaja Kab. Soppeng. This was a quasi-experimental research using two classes on pre-test and post-test design, the population of this research was second grade senior high school 1 liliriaja Kab. Soppeng. The technique to take the sample is cluster random sampling and the data was analyzed into descriptive statistics and T-test. The result of data analyzing shows that the students? achievement of control class at pre-test 3,5625 and post-test 5,59375, experimental class at pre-test 2,71875 and post-test 4,46875. While the result of t-test score was 35,3 ? 2,00 (t test was greater than t table). For the effectiveness of the speaking classroom context, the method tends to provide difficulties in practicing the speaking method. The researcher suggests the future researchers to conduct the relevant research by adding some new aspects into it. The aspects can be expanded in terms of the method used, number of research variables, research participants, etc.

Abstract

The aims of this research were to find the implementation of government policies toward the African-American slaves in America and act of resistance against slavery system as reflected in the novel Uncle Tom?s Cabin. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method by applying sociological approach in analyzing Uncle Tom?s Cabin with reference to Wellek and Warren on the relationship between literary work and social context in which it was written. Data sources are primary and supporting data. The primary data are taken from Uncle Tom?s Cabin, and supporting data are taken from the books, journals, articles, and some sources from internet. In this novel, the researcher found that; 1) Government policies toward the African-American slaves reflected in Uncle Tom?s Cabin are Slave Codes 1705 and Fugitive Slave Act 1850 2) the act of resistence by the slaves against slavery system reflected in this novel is passive resistence. Passive resistences are shown by the characters of the slave such as runnaway, tell a lie, and protesting the authority of their owner.

Abstract

The research aims to examine the correlation between students? self-confidence and speaking performance in  SMAN EX Palopo. The researcher implemented quantitative as the research design because the data in this research was correlation design. The sample of this research consist of students MIA 1, MIA 2, MIA 3. The researcher took five samples from each class. The researcher used the students score from spoken test to categorize as samples of this research. To collect the data, the researcher employed two kinds instrument, such as: Speaking Test and questioners. The result of correlation analysis shows that there is no correlation between students? self-confidence and speaking performance in SMAN EX Palopo. It proofed from p-value (0.088) is higher than ? (0.05). Therefore H0 is accepted and H1 is rejected.
