Surakarta English and Literature Journal (SELJU) is a peer-reviewed journal published by Language and Literature Faculty, University of Surakarta twice a year in August and February. Abstract

Translation is a process of rewriting someone's ideas to dismiss without reducing understanding of the meaning and meaning to be conveyed. The scope of the translation is very broad, where translation is not only limited to translating a formal or informal text, but also at a level of aspects such as linguistics, literature and culture. The purpose of this paper is to link literary theory in the scope of translation where the aspects of literary psychology are the point of discussion at this writing.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objectives of this study are to identify the kinds of lexical cohesion used in Adele’s song lyrics in the album 25 and to find out the impact of the most type to hearers. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. Data analysis was performed by categorizing data based on the theory from Halliday and Hasan consisting of reiteration (repetition, synonym, superordinate, general word) and collocation. The final step is to present data and make conclusions. The research findings show that repetition has 34 data with 47%, followed by synonym has 15 data with 21%, superordinate and collocation have 9 data with 12% and general word has 6 data with 8%. Repetition dominates the lexical type of cohesion and general word is the least appear. The impacts of the most type to hearers are repetition makes the meaning of the song deeper and hearers will be deeper in enrolling their emoticons in the song.ABSTRAKTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis kohesi leksikal yang digunakan dalam lirik lagu Adele pada album 25 dan untuk mengetahui dampak dari tipe yang paling dominan bagi pendengar. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Analisis data dilakukan dengan mengelompokkan data berdasarkan teori dari Halliday dan Hasan yang terdiri dari reiteration (repetition, synonim, superordinate, general word) dan collocation. Langkah terakhir adalah mempresentasikan data dan membuat kesimpulan. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pengulangan memiliki 34 data dengan 47%, diikuti sinonim memiliki 15 data dengan 21%, superordinate dan kolokasi memiliki 9 data dengan 12%, dan general word memiliki 6 data dengan 8%. Pengulangan kata mendominasi jenis kohesi leksikal dan general word paling sedikit muncul. Sebagai dampak dari jenis kohesi leksikal yang dominan adalah pengulangan kata membuat makna lagu menjadi lebih dalam dan pendengar akan lebih bisa menghayati emosi mereka dalam lagu.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to find out the translation quality of tourism brochure in Solo in terms of its accuracy, acceptability and readability. The research method applied was descriptive-qualitative. The source of data consists of documents and informants selected with purposive sampling technique. The data were Indonesian-English tourism brochure in the form of words, phrases, clauses and sentences. The other data were taken from questionnaires assessed by three respondents. The results of the translation quality show that the translation of tourism brochure in Solo is accurate, acceptable and readable.

Abstract

This study is a part of register research aimed at investigating the functions of English terms in Korean Popular Music (K-Pop). There are many English terms used in K-Pop, and those terms are assumed to have some purposes. The researcher completed this study through several phases called data gathering, data analysis, and data presentation. The present study reveals that there are at least eleven functions of English terms in K-Pop. The terms are utilized for promoting the singers’ music projects, showing self as something different from the others, communicating briefly, praising the singers’ physical appearances, appreciating the singers’ achievements, giving comment on the singers’ attitudes, commenting on the singers’ fashions, joking, giving appreciation to the music agencies, appreciating the fans, and showing hatred toward the singers.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui penerapan creating stories dalam pengajaran menulis suatu teks berbahasa Inggris yang baik dan untuk mengetahui media yang paling disukai siswa kelas 5 SDN Jombor dalam menulis teks berbahasa Inggris. Teknik mengajar yang menarik membuat siswa lebih mudah menulis sebuah teks berbahasa Inggris secara sederhana. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penetian kualitatif. Pada penelitian ini, hasil dan pembahasan digambarkan dengan penjabaran. Hasil pekerjaan tulis siswa berbahasa Inggris merupakan data yang diambil di SD N Jombor 01. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan observasi dan dokumentasi. Pada dasarnya penerapan creating stories dapat dilakukan dengan menggunakan gambar berseri dan bubble. Creating Stories ini membantu siswa dalam menulis cerita berbahasa Inggris kemudian mereka mempresentasikannya di depan kelas. Media yang paling banyak disukai oleh siswa kelas 5 SDN Jombor I adalah gambar berseri.

Abstract

Technical term is a word that has a specific meaning within a specific field of expertise. Translation of technical terms is challenging and becomes one of the most factors influencing the process of translation. This paper discusses about the pattern of translation of technical terms in disaster management, with the focus on translation techniques and translation quality. This study analyses the translation of technical terms made by novice/student translators. The data include words and phrases belonging to technical terms in disaster management. The translation techniques used by the translators to render the meaning of the technical terms in disaster management were categorized based on those proposed by Molina and Albir (2002). The translation quality was measured with the translation quality assessment proposed by Nababan, Nuraeni, and Sumardiono(2012). Patterns of translation were then drawn. The examination reveals that there are three patterns used by eight translators in conveying the meaning of technical terms in disaster management. This study also pinpoints possible causes underlying the usage of translation technique in search of equivalences.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis paper aims to determine students' perceptions about etiquette and politeness that must be considered by students when communicating with teachers in an instant messaging application. This study is a qualitative study with a narrative inquiry. The object of research was 8th grade students of Al-Abidin Islamic Middle School Surakarta.The data were collected by interviewing five students from the 8th grade of Al-Abidin Islamic Middle School Surakarta.The results showed that most students already understood the concept of politeness, although it was still simple. Students also understood the reasons why they have to be polite in sending messages to the teachers, although the reasons were more due to age differences.In assessing the contents and the procedures how the way they send massage, the students have already known which one polite or not.ABSTRAKMakalah ini bertujuan untuk menentukan persepsi siswa tentang etiket dan kesopanan yang harus dipertimbangkan oleh siswa ketika berkomunikasi dengan guru dalam aplikasi pesan instan. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan pertanyaan naratif. Objek penelitian adalah siswa kelas 8 Sekolah Menengah Islam Al-Abidin Surakarta. Data dikumpulkan dengan mewawancarai lima siswa dari kelas 8 Sekolah Menengah Islam Al-Abidin Surakarta. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar siswa telah memahami konsep kesopanan, meskipun itu masih sederhana. Siswa juga memahami alasan mengapa mereka harus sopan dalam mengirim pesan kepada guru, meskipun alasannya lebih karena perbedaan usia. Dalam penilaian isi dan prosedur bagaimana mereka mengirim pesan, para siswa sudah tahu mana yang sopan ataupun tidak.

Abstract

 Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengidentifikasi tipe deiksis dan menemukan tipe dominan deiksis dalam lirik lagu Back To You dari Selana Gomez. Penelitian ini termasuk jenis penelitian kualitatif. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode observasi. Teknik pengumpulan data dengan cara mendengarkan lagu dan mengananalisis lagu Back To You dari Selana Gomez. Hasil dari penelitian ini yaitu semua tipe deiksis ditemukan dalam orang (45 data), tempat (1 data), waktu (2 data) deiksis ditemukan dalam lirik lagu Back To You dari Selana Gomez. Deiksis orang sering ditemukan di lirik Back To You. Kebanyakan tipe deiksis yag ditemukan dari penelitian ini yaitu deiksis orang seperti I dan My. Sedangkan deiksis jamak orang yang banyak ditemukan yaitu We yang ditujukan kepada pendengar.

Abstract

Complaint as a communicative act can be divided into two categories. First, as a face threatening act when it is uttered directly, second, it becomes a politeness when it uses indirectness. This research is explanatory research which tries to explain why complaint can have many different strategies. For data collection, the writer used purposive sampling taken from Twilight novel written by Stephani Meyer, but the writer chose Bahasa Indonesia version.  While for analyzing the data, the writer used substitution method with social context consideration. From the data analysis, it is found that complaint is always a face threatening act when it is used directly.

Abstract

This is such a kind of descriptive qualitative research that aims at describing the types of grammatical language transfer on English caption in Instagram's hashtag ≠englishexpounivet. Data were collected through observation and documentation by observing the English language caption of the students of a private university in Sukoharjo in their Instagram's hashtag #englishexpounivet, then documenting them using screenshot or capture (taking pictures via phone cellular). The results showed that the types of language transfer may be positive or negative. However, negative transfer was more dominant relating to the grammatical field. Generally, this negative transfer did not arise alone but along with other forms. There were some cases relating to negative transfer, such as tenses, plurality, subject-verb, passive voice, preposition, pronoun, noun phrase, article, diction, capital letter, auxiliary, and translation.
