Abstract

In the context of Islamic organization in Indonesia, researchers tend to focus their study on the well-known Muslim organizations, such as NU and Muhammadiyah; they tend to overlook other Islamic movements, such as Al-Jam’iyatul Washliyah in Northern Sumatera. This article examines Al-Washilah’s history and role, especially in education that covers its educational institutions, types, and problems. It argues that Al-Washliyah is very committed to the dynamics of Islamic education in the country, and plays a role as a stronghold for the Sunni tradition. Al-Washilah has contributed to the formation of Islamic culture in Malay world (Nusantara) since the colonial era and is concerned with broader issues, ranging from politics, culture, propagation, economy to education. Al-Washliyah has long played an important role for the continuity of the tradition of Islam in Indonesia.

Abstract

Al-Māwardi’s concept of learning goals and indicators have rarely been studied and developed in the context of modern education. This article examines the learning goals and indicators of successful education in the thoughts of al-Māwardi and analyzes its relevance to modern education. According to al-Mawardi, successful education can be achieved when students can memorize, understand, know the purpose of learning and practice what they have learnt, and when these indicators shape students’ cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. He maintained that these learning processes must be based on a sound faith. This article demonstrates that these objectives and indicators of successful learning proposed by al-Mawardi are very relevant to modern education. Faith based education helps increase student’s belief and discards worldly-oriented education that tend to produce materialistically individualistic people.

Abstract

Globalization is inevitable phenomenon that may cause anxiety amongst countries, such as Indonesia, that still preserve their culture, ethics and religious values because it always introduces new things that are not easily adjusted to regional or local contexts. Globalization as it is reflected in rapid change and transformation in technology has affected most of human’s life, including education. Globalized education is the one that is characterized by global and transnational elements in its basic structure, for example, the use of information technologies and digital media that have both positive and negative impacts. However, for Indonesia, whose majority population is Islam, globalization is not a threat, which should be evaded. What needs to do is to integrate Islamic concepts and values in it. Globalization and its type of education that looks contrary to religious norms will no longer become a menace if it is strengthened with religious values.

Abstract

Language and culture are closely intertwined. Language is medium through which culture is expressed. Culture consists of a set of norms or values that always use language for its expression in various forms. Speakers tend to use patterns and contexts of a language from which it originates. Experts of language argue that teaching and learning of a particular language will never be completely successful without considering cultural patterns and values of it. Cultural competency is one of the basic requirements for the study of language. From this point of view, this article attempts to formulate the concept of study of the Arabic for non-Arab students from the perspective of Islamic Arabic culture both in the contexts of Arabs and non-Arab Muslims, who study Arabic. This concept includes principles, approaches, objectives and materials of the study of Arabic as a second or foreign language.

Abstract

History of Islamic ethical philosophy notes the debates and discrepancies among Muslim scholars. One of these is between Ibnu Miskawaih and al-Ghazali. While the former is known as the defender of rational thought, the latter is said to be the prime supporter of mystical tradition in Islam and is often accused of being the cause of defunct of critical Islamic thought. However, to what extent and in which context those differences occur have not been discussed sufficiently. To understand these differences clearly and to distinguish the core issues of the controversies between these two great Muslim scholars, this article aims to examine Miskawaih’s and al-Ghazali’s thoughts and analyze them in a dialogical framework. This comparative study investigates the ethical concept promoted by these two figures and focuses on other related issues, such as the basic notion of ethics, human existential structure, the eminence of morality and elements of educational ethics.

Abstract

Morality and human behavior are created as social construction, and developed through education. This article is aimed at explaining about interactions amongst students in the classroom, based on constructivist learning theory, as source of positive atmospheres that are very important for the formation of character and morality. Morality is not simply taught or absorbed in subjects like civics or social studies. It must be developed in a variety of activities in the classroom. According to the theory, developing a good and appropriate atmosphere is necessary to introduce good values and norms in which students learn to construct their own knowledge through continuous interactions with social contexts, and develop their ideas and feelings about people and objects. They can learn about life critically and understand how people live and under what condition they live, whether in peace or violence, with affection or hostility, cooperation or fights, and satisfaction or disappointment.

Abstract

Islamic Higher Education in Indonesia has changed rapidly to adapt to changing society. They have reformed their curriculum and revised their visions to be modern educational institutions. Now the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MORA) introduces a new policy to (re)integrate a sharp dichotomy between religious and secular sciences by establishing Islamic state university. It attempts to create a model of education that is different from general state university, which does not integrate religion and science in their curricula. With the birth of Islamic state university, the concept of Islam as a complete and perfect religion can be achieved and realized. This change opens up a new hope for Muslims that they are able to develop modern education that is not lack behind their secular institutions so they can make more substantial contribution to the state and society and resolve challenges that arise in the global era.
