Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a degenerative disease that continues to increase in numberin Indonesia and is a disease that is spread throughout the world due to unbalancednutritional conditions. Treatment of diabetes mellitus is a chronic and lifelongtreatment. Treatment of diabetes mellitus, such as the use of insulin and oralantihyperglycemia drugs, is relatively expensive, is used for a long time and can causeunwanted side effects. There are many plants that have potential as antihyperglycemiadrugs. One of the active compounds that act as antihyperglycemia isflavonoids.Flavonoids derived from various types of plants studied are thought to actas antihyperglycemic agents. Flavonoids are known to have the ability to scavenge freeradicals or act as natural antioxidants. The antioxidant activity of flavonoids is relatedto phenolic –OH groups which can capture or neutralize free radicals (such as ROS orRNS). Flavonoids can play a role in pancreatic tissue damage caused by DNA alkylationdue to alloxan induction as a result of improving the morphology of the rat pancreas(Prameswari and Widjanarko, 2014).

Abstract

Anticancer drugs are primarily aimed at inhibiting the growth andproliferation of cancer cells. The soursop plant (Annona squamosa L.) has thepotential to be developed as an anticancer drug. This plant contains severalactive compounds including flavonoids, borneol, camphor, alkaloids, terpenes,saponins, tannins, polyphenols and polyketide compounds. This study wasconducted to assess the efficacy of the polar fraction of soursop leaves oncytotoxic activity based on the IC₅₀ value in T47D cells. This research isexperimental in vitro study using cell line T47D. The methanol fraction ofsoursop leaves was diluted with DMSO and DMEM to obtain a concentration of500; 250; 125; 62.5; 31.25 µg/ mL cisplatin with a concentration of 50:25:12,5:6,25:3,125 µg/mL. The methanol fraction of soursop from the highestconcentration of 500 µg/ml has average viability of 46.77% and the averagepercentage of viability will increase in proportion to the decrease in theconcentration of the test compound. The IC50 value shows the concentrationvalue that results in the inhibition of cell proliferation by 50% of the population.In conclusion, methanol fraction of soursop leaves have an anticytotoxic effecton T47D cell line through the role of flavonoid metabolites.

Abstract

Cholesterol is an important precursor that plays a role in the production andregulation of various sterol group compounds, especially steroid hormonecompounds, androgen hormone compounds, cortisol compounds and estrogencompounds. This herb is known to have the effect of improving glucose regulationby increasing glucose intake into cells and tissues. Its ability to improve cell andtissue metabolism is mediated by the content of secondary metabolite compounds.This ability is believed to have the potential to improve cholesterol regulation. Bayleaf extract is effective in lowering cholesterol levels through regulation of Acetyl CoAproduction.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition that disturbs the body's bloodsugar regulation. Bay leaves contain entirely various secondary metabolites,where this plant is rich in flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenes and glycosides. Thisstudy aims to assess the effect of bay leaf extract (Syzygium polyanthum) onblood sugar levels and the expression of GLUT4 protein in muscle tissue. A totalof 30 white rats (Rattus norvegicus) Wistar strain obtained from the EurekaResearch Laboratory (Palembang, Indonesia) weighing between 200 - 250 grams.Bay leaf simplicia was obtained from the Tawangmangu Herbal Research Center,Karanganyar, Indonesia. After 1 week of adaptation, the mice were randomlydivided into the following six groups, each containing 5 animals: Normal controlgroup, diabetes group (negative control), diabetes + metformin group (Met; 45mg / kg), Diabetes + BLE (75 mg/kg), diabetes + BLE group (150 mg / kg) anddiabetes + BLE group (300 mg/kg). Alloxan-induced white rats showed a verysignificant increase in blood sugar levels, where the use of the drug metforminwas able to reduce blood sugar levels significantly even though they had notreached the target blood glucose target of less than 200 mg / dL. The treatmentwith bay leaf extract was able to reduce blood sugar levels significantly. Theadministration of metformin drugs or bay leaf extract showed the ability toincrease the level of GLUT4 protein. In conclusion, bay leaf extract affectsreducing blood sugar levels in diabetes mellitus white rats by increasing glucoseintake to cells and tissues.

Abstract

Bidara plants have the efficacy as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory,antimicrobial, anti-fungal and prevents tumours. Bidara is efficacious to protecthuman DNA cells caused by damage from actinic radiation. This study aims toexplore the acute toxicity test of the ethanol extract of Bidara leaves using whitemice as experimental animals. A total of 30 white rats (Rattus norvegicus) Wistarstrain obtained from the Eureka Research Laboratory (Palembang, Indonesia)weighing between 200 - 250 grams. After one week of adaptation, the mice wererandomly divided into the following six groups, each containing five animals:Normal control group and Bidara extract group (50mg/kg BW; 150 mg/kg BW;450 mg/kg BW; 1350 mg/kg BW; and 4050 mg/kg BW). This study shows thatthe extract of Bidara leaves has a relatively high toxic dose, namely at a dose of4050 mg/kg BW. Bidara leaf extract at doses below 1500 mg/kg BW, shows notoxic effect on the liver. In conclusion, bidara leaf extract has a toxic dose above4000 mg/kg BW in Wistar white rats.

Abstract

Noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia) is one of the most common plants inIndonesia. This plant is often found in various regions in Indonesia, where theseplants are often in the form of shrubs or wild plants that grow in yards orplantations. This study aims to assess the effect of noni (Morinda citrifolia) fruitextract on blood sugar levels and the expression of GLUT4 protein in muscletissue which shows the potential of the test extract's ability to improve bloodglucose intake to cells so that it can maintain blood sugar regulation. Thisresearch was an experimental study that used white rats as research subject.Induction of diabetes was done by injecting alloxan at a dose of 110 mg/kg BWintraperitoneally; then the white rats were given 10% glucose to drink. Alloxan-induced white rats showed a very significant increase in blood sugar levels,where the use of the drug metformin was able to reduce blood sugar levelssignificantly. In white rats induced with diabetes mellitus, there was a decreasein GLUT4 levels in muscle tissue. The administration of metformin drugs or nonifruit extracts shows the ability to increase levels of GLUT4 protein. In conclusion,noni fruit extract affects lowering blood sugar levels in diabetes mellitus whiterats by increasing glucose intake to cells and tissues.

Abstract

Sambiloto (Andrographis peniculata) is one of the most common plants inIndonesia. Sambiloto contains quite varied secondary metabolites, where thisplant is rich in flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenes and glycosides. This study aimsto assess the effect of Sambiloto (Andrographis peniculata) leaf extract on bloodsugar levels and the expression of GLUT4 protein in muscle tissue whichindicates the potential of the test extract's ability to improve blood glucose intaketo cells so that it can maintain blood sugar regulation. The process of extractingsambiloto is carried out by maceration in which 500 grams of simplicia aremacerated with 96% ethanol for 72 hours. After 1 week of adaptation, the micewere randomly divided into the following six groups, each containing 5 animals:Normal control group, diabetes group (negative control), diabetes + metformingroup (Met; 45 mg/kg), Diabetes + ES group (50 mg/kg), diabetes + ES group(100 mg/kg) and diabetes + ES group (200 mg/kg). The treatment with sambilotoextract was able to reduce blood sugar levels significantly, were at the ES 100and 200 mg/kg BW doses it was able to reduce blood sugar levels to reach thetarget below 200 mg/kg BW. The dominant flavonoids in Sambiloto leaf extractare believed to be responsible for the effect of blood glucose regulation. Inconclusion, Sambiloto extract affects lowering blood sugar levels in diabetesmellitus white rats by increasing glucose intake to cells and tissues.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by an increase in blood sugardue to defects in insulin secretion, insulin sensitivity, or both. The number ofpeople with diabetes mellitus in Indonesia has increased every year. The numberof people with diabetes is 6.9% in 2013 to 10.9% in 2018. Various therapies have beencarried out for the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus, one of which is herbal therapy.Gynura Procumbens is a plant that is widely used as a treatment for diabetes mellitus,kidney, rash and fever, and hypertension. The flavonoid content in GynuraProcumben replaces the decrease in blood sugar. This review article attempts toexplain the role of Gynura Procumbens as an antidiabetic therapy in previous studies.The method used in this article is through searching articles through the NCBIdatabase and Google Scholar. The results of an article search found that GynuraProcumben has antidiabetic potential which can reduce blood sugar in patients withDiabetes Mellitus

Abstract

Pasak bumi (Eurycoma longifolia Jack.) is a species belonging Simarobuaceae hasbeen long used as traditional medicine, which known very well as aphrosidiac. Thestudies have been conducted to reveal the benefits of E. longifolia throughethnobotany, phyto- chemical, and bioessay approaches, but the review articles on theits utilization and bioactivity limited. This article is based on scien- tific articlespublished on line or off line, then synthesized so that to be information the relationshipbetween use and bioactivity. Ethno- botanyof E. longifolia have been used as amedicine for fever, ma- laria, improve stamina, diabetic, cancer, aphrodisiac, erectiledys- function. Bioactivity of E. longifolia is antiosteoporotic, antimicro- bial,aphrodisiac, anticancer, angiogenesis, and hepatoprotective. Eurycomanone issecondary metabolites in E, longifolia has activi- ty as an antimalaria, antipyretic,aphrodisiac, and cytotoxic. The quassinoids, coumarin and glycosides of El haveactivity increase the production, quality, totality, synthesis and release of spermato-zoa. Eurycoma longifolia is very potential to be developed as an antiosteoporotic andaprosidiac drug, but until now most of it is harvested directly from the forest, so topreserve it, we need to study the cultivation method.
