Abstract

Problem-solving skill is one of the fundamental skills that must be mastered by students in the 21st century. This study identifies the enhancement of students’ problem-solving skill in oscillation and sound wave concept by utilizing multimedia based integrated instruction (MBI2). The subjects of this research were 30 junior high school students in Bandung-West Java. Data and analysis result showed that students’ problem-solving skill was enhanced in moderate criteria, showed by Ngain value of 0.57. Therefore, it can be concluded that MBI2 can enhance students’ problem-solving skills in oscillation and sound wave concept.

Abstract

Students’ perception of assessments can serve as a guiding light for improving overall educational practices. A questionnaire was collected from 80 engineering student to discover students' perceptions of different types of assessment and their overall perceptions of various type of assessments advantages in enhancing learning experiences. The majority of students strongly agreed that quiz and case study was beneficial and helpful for enhancing learning experience in engineering courses. On the contrary, project presentation, journal review, essay, interview, and demonstration was seemed unhelpful for students to enhance their learning experience. In terms of enjoyment, a discrepancy was found for what engineering students’ perceived as important assessment tools for learning and what they actually enjoy doing.

Abstract

The technology era provides new opportunities to improve mathematics teaching and learning. In this paper, we reported the implementation of Adobe Flash as learning media for improving students' reasoning ability. Results suggested a significantly improved reasoning ability in experimental class compared to control class, which indicated the effectiveness of Adobe Flash as media for learning geometry. The use of animation, video, and worked example, foster students’ reasoning ability by making geometrical concepts transparent and reducing possible misleading spatial perception.

Abstract

As it has been stressed on within the educational program curriculum, science process skills acquisition is an inextricable outcome of a science learning program. Therefore, the proper type of assessment for measuring science process skills is an inseparable part of science education program. In this study, we use a Two-Tier Multiple Choice (TTMC) assessment instruments to measure 148 senior high schools students’ science process skills. Through TTMC assessment instrument, we found that the students' skills in six different science process skills indicators were varied, with skills to communicate scientific concepts as the highest level of acquisition.

Abstract

Fluid pressure is considered as an abstract concept so that an innovative method must be used to help the students understand it correctly. We introduced Above Ground Storage Tank (AST) to the students to help them grasp the fundamentals of fluid pressure and evaluated how this approach improved their scientific communication ability. Based on their ability in communicating the mechanism of fluid pressure, students were able to organize their knowledge, delivering their knowledge to other people, and making a better conclusion after the introduction of AST. Thus, it can be concluded that the introduction of AST can improve students’ scientific communication ability.

Abstract

Environmental issues from pollution to climate change are a major concern in today’s world in which mining activities and its attributed pollution effects posed a looming threat to the environment and human health. This study examines how the implementation of contextual learning in environmental education program could alter students’ attitude on the health effects of mercury. Respondents were 165 junior high school students in Aceh Province-Indonesia. Students’ attitude on the health effects of mercury was explored via a questionnaire administered before and after learning, and the collected data was analyzed by Rasch Modeling. Rasch modeling indicated that contextual learning significantly alters students’ attitude on the health effects of mercury. Students’ attitude changes before and after learning are discussed.

Abstract

Discovery learning is arguably the most debated learning approach because even after more than 58 years since Brunner suggested it in 1961, it continued to be a center of heated debate. The main concern for numerous educational experts was the degree of teacher involvement in discovery learning. One of the discovery learning variants which addressed this issue is discovery-inquiry learning, a learning model currently endorsed by the Indonesian Government to be implemented in the classroom. This study explored the potency and caveats of discovery-inquiry learning model and discussed improvement suggestions when implementing the model.

Abstract

Previous studies suggested that real-world problems and students’ characteristics should be emphasized when designing statistics teaching materials. ELPSA Framework could address those considerations and was used as a learning framework for teaching statistics to junior high school students. Prior to classroom implementation, the teaching materials was tested and deemed valid and practical. Pilot implementation results showed that the teaching materials was effective for learning statistics because the ELPSA framework components facilitate students’ understanding of statistical concepts. Students also perceived learning based on the ELPSA framework positively because it enables them to enjoy the learning process.

Abstract

Science process skills are considered as one of the momentous learning goals for a pre-service education program, but since students enrolled in pre-service elementary school teachers program comes from a different educational background, we evaluated whether the implementation of experiment learning and educational background might lead to a different level of success in science process skills acquisition. Results showed that different learning methods, as well as different educational background, resulted in different science process skills improvement.

Abstract

Students' incorrect answers in a mathematics test provide insight into their mathematical ability and can be used as a foundation to formulate effective countermeasures. Thirty students' answers in a mathematical test were analyzed, and students with the highest rate of incorrect answers were interviewed individually to delve further on circumstances that contributed to their results. Results suggested that 45.8% of students made varying degrees of mistakes in answering the questions, with five students performing the poorest. Inadequate understanding of mathematics concepts and students' disposition contributes to students' incorrect answers.
