Abstract

This article studies the transformation of homes of Timbrah Settlement, a Bali Aga Community of Karangasem Regency. It focusses on two fundamental elements, namely spatial formation and built forms which are, by tradition, two unique features characterizing the built environment of Timbrah. These spatial elements symbolize complex socio-cultural systems of belief, subsistence, gender, knowledge, defend, time, territoriality, etc. In its development, the community has to inevitably interrelate with various congencies brought in by modernity - taking place globally, and other forces driven from within. Some observed consequences brought by these influences include (not limited to) modifications in value systems, way of people live their life, and demographic formations. This observation has constituted an inspiration to the conduct of this whole study, in which qualitative approaches were put into practice. Study findings demonstrate that almost all Timbrah homes (karang paumahan) have been transformed in one way or another. This condition is mainly due to a need for more living space, efficiency in spatial utilization, social status, self actualization, and to accommodate changes of inhabitants' lifestyle. The transformation of Timbrah homes has been carried out in a gradual manner, directed by a conscious understanding to maintain local knowledge and values, especially of those associated with the governance of space exist in both domestic and communal spheres. In consequence, attempts to keep Timbrah's identity as a unique Bali Aga community have been indirectly imposed on, at any given opportunity. Abstract

Abstract Kampung Jawa is a high density settlement in Tabanan Regency. Historically, it is a settlement for migrants with no recorded history as to how it developed at the first place. It has expanded rapidly to form a banjar. Qualitative research was conducted to investigate temporal change in spatial formation concomitant upon the social restructuring that took place to create this densely populated neighbourhood. Data collection entailed the following steps: grand tour; site observation; interviews; social reconstruction; and dialogue between findings. This study suggests that within a period of 92 years (1921-2012) the population reached a number of 1,978 persons forming 512 family units, accommodated exclusively in Banjar Tunggal Sari. Physically, the banjar has developed their settlement sporadically. Nonetheless a strong Muslim community identity was gradually established. This settlement continues to grow in size along with its strong Muslim character, expressed in the construction of various Islamic facilities. These are either self-funded or financially assisted by Tabanan Local government and/or wider Muslim communities outside Kampung Jawa. Keywords: KampungJawa, high density settlement, spatial development, Muslim community Abstrak Kampung Jawa merupakan salah satu perkampungan padat di Kabupaten Tabanan. Abstract

A comforting home does not simply refer to a beautifully designed and built form, but it is also about involving environmentally conscious decisions. A great challenge faces many cities, such as Denpasar, nowadays is how to impose and implement green architecture related concepts and practices, thus the progressive housing developments taking place in many urban areas all over the world incur less (no) destruction to nature. The green architecture idealism comes under the umbrella of a greater concept of sustainable development. It aims at reducing negative impacts brought by any form of development on the built forms, human health and ultimately on our natural environment. This research uses qualitative-descriptive approach. Data collection was done using several methods, which are interviews with developers, site observations, and literature study. The purpose of this research is to develop environmentally friendly solutions in overcoming problems associated to housing developments in Denpasar City. Study results reveal that such solutions can be applied in four manners, such as: (i) efficiency and energy savings by adjusting windows positions and the installment of additional ventilations; (ii) water conservation, i.e. by planting grass as a media to cover the soil and create a rain garden; (iii) the use of recycled materials, for example by using building debris as materials for ground coverage; (iv) creation of healthy and comfortable living space by reducing indoor partitions, the use of bright colors but have shading effects, especially to ones' eyes, high ceiling, and nature friendly waste management mechanisms and practices. Keywords: house, green architecture, environmentally friendly, Denpasar

Abstract

Peliatan Village which is located in a close proximity to the famous and well known Ubud, has been developing vastly into a tourist destination. Following this development, demand for spaces escalates, squeezing those available for ritual, ceremonial, and traditions related incidental uses. In consequence, the latter functions have been accommodated within existing public spaces, which are gradually available in a more limited scale. Conflicts occur when this practice interrupts physical formations of public space in use and therefore its original roles. Taking a case study of the use of open public space for mass-cremation ceremony in Peliatan Village, this study analyses the impact of ritual processions on a shared open space, especially in regard to its functions that this space is assigned for. It used an inductive approach and a descriptive qualitative method. Study findings demonstrate that the additional uses imposed on public open space in Peliatan Village is disruptive to the overall existence of this spatial unit. It is further discovered that these added functions disturb the quality of public space's spatial settings by disrupting its fixed, semi-fixed, and non-fixed elements, which shape this public property at the first place. The article concludes that a new strategy is urgently needed, if a public space is to be utilized in combination with other mass communal functions. Keywords: public open space, mass ngaben ceremony, ritual procession, spatial setting

Abstract

In the Lesser Sunda Islands of the Indonesian Republic a Kampung is located in Flores Island. It is called Kampung Wae Rebo and constitutes the focus of this paper. Here the formation of traditional settlements with their ritual practices has a dominant role. Here, culture is the determining factor that shapes the living environment. The Manggarai ethnic group who live in Wae Rebo is well known for their enduring perpetuation of tradition. One such tradition is selected for in-depth study - that of the annual ceremony of penti. This takes the form of a giant ritual pertaining to the agricultural life of the community. Here a series of activities relating to this ritual have affected the spatial formation of the Wae Rebo settlement in unique ways. The study methodology deploys concepts derived from both structuralism and hermeneutics. In conclusion the following paper suggests that the existence of Wae Rebo settlement has been historically determined by five elements, namely; the social structure of the community; ritual practices; harmony with nature; defence from both internal and external forces; and the adaptive qualities of culture. Keywords: spatial arrangement; traditional settlement; Kampung Wae Rebo; ritual penti Abstrak Di Kepulauan Sunda Kecil, tepatnya di Pulau Flores, terdapat Kampung Wae Rebo dengan pola permukiman tradisional yang didominasi oleh praktek-praktek ritualnya.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract Loloan is one of many unique villages located across the Jembrana Regency (Bali). Historically this community is descended from the Bugis ethnicity who sailed from Celebes Island to Bali. It is believed they were the first Muslim missionaries to spread Islamic beliefs on the island. Their arrival was acknowledged by the King of Jembrana who then provided them with land to settle. They populated this newly formed settlement with Bugis style's stilt houses, an unfamiliar form of home to the Balinese. The community has over time developed a distinctive living environment, extending the Bugis traditions. Given different resources as well as other natural circumstances compared to those found back home in Bugis, the Loloan community developed a range of stilt houses. The objective of this paper is to study the typology of stilt houses existing in this community, and the underlying factors determining their physical forms. The study was conducted using qualitative methods. The analysis was carried out by examining the spatial structure and architectural forms at both macro (settlement) and micro (houses) levels. Data collection was done by carrying out a literature study, interviews and physical observation. Research findings show there are four types of stilt houses in the Loloan community. Determining factors behind the emergence of this typology include socio cultural aspects, economic conditions, activities of the inhabitants, communal interactions taking place in the domestic sphere, building age, land availability and preferences of individuals living in the house.
